This book was released on 2006-04-28 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Preliminary Test and Stein-Type Estimation with Applications provides a com-prehensive account of the theory and methods of estimation in a variety of standard models used in applied statistical inference. It is an in-depth introduction to the estimation theory for graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in various fields, such as statistics, engineering, social sciences, and medical sciences. Coverage of the material is designed as a first step in improving the estimates before applying full Bayesian methodology, while problems at the end of each chapter enlarge the scope of the applications. This book contains clear and detailed coverage of basic terminology related to various topics, including: * Simple linear model; ANOVA; parallelism model; multiple regression model with non-stochastic and stochastic constraints; regression with autocorrelated errors; ridge regression; and multivariate and discrete data models * Normal, non-normal, and nonparametric theory of estimation * Bayes and empirical Bayes methods * R-estimation and U-statistics * Confidence set estimation

This book was released on 2009 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider an analysis of covariance with a single covariate and a number of treatments. It is common practice to perform a preliminary test of the null hypothesis of parallelism for each treatment group before proceeding with further inference. If the null hypothesis is accepted, that is, that the slope of each of the straight lines is the same, then further inference proceeds on the assumption that the slopes of the lines are actually the same. Of course it is possible that the particular slopes of the lines are different, even when the null hypothesis of parallelism is accepted. This thesis will focus on inference in the form of confidence intervals for treatment differences. We will specifically consider how a preliminary hypothesis test for parallelism affects the coverage probability of these confidence intervals. This is explored by conducting Monte-Carlo simulations based on a real life data set using the programming language R. The real life data are about the effect of additives on weight gain in animals, which has four treatments with three subjects in each treatment group. It turns out that performing an initial test of parallelism is problematic because the minimum coverage probability of the confidence intervals falls below the nominal coverage. Hence the confidence intervals constructed after a preliminary test of parallelism are in fact, misleading.

Book excerpt: Statistical Inference via Data Science: A ModernDive into R and the Tidyverse provides a pathway for learning about statistical inference using data science tools widely used in industry, academia, and government. It introduces the tidyverse suite of R packages, including the ggplot2 package for data visualization, and the dplyr package for data wrangling. After equipping readers with just enough of these data science tools to perform effective exploratory data analyses, the book covers traditional introductory statistics topics like confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and multiple regression modeling, while focusing on visualization throughout. Features: ● Assumes minimal prerequisites, notably, no prior calculus nor coding experience ● Motivates theory using real-world data, including all domestic flights leaving New York City in 2013, the Gapminder project, and the data journalism website, FiveThirtyEight.com ● Centers on simulation-based approaches to statistical inference rather than mathematical formulas ● Uses the infer package for "tidy" and transparent statistical inference to construct confidence intervals and conduct hypothesis tests via the bootstrap and permutation methods ● Provides all code and output embedded directly in the text; also available in the online version at moderndive.com This book is intended for individuals who would like to simultaneously start developing their data science toolbox and start learning about the inferential and modeling tools used in much of modern-day research. The book can be used in methods and data science courses and first courses in statistics, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on personality dispositions research into interpreter performance, injecting fresh impetus for a new research agenda designed to further our understanding of hardiness–performance linkages in interpreters. Interpreters are made not born (Mackintosh, 1999: 67), i.e., it is generally assumed that everyone has the potential to become an interpreter, given proper training. Nonetheless, time constraints and financial limitations make it advisable to select applicants who need the least training. Aptitude testing for interpreting, with a purpose to admitting the most promising candidates, has thus become not only a practical necessity for institutions but also a central issue among interpreting researchers. The book presents a literature review and empirical survey, which reveal, e.g., that aptitude testing for interpreting attaches great importance to cognitive aptitude. In contrast, non-cognitive attributes (personality in particular), while also considered important, are seldom measured, due to their complex structure and the lack of scientific measurement tools. Bearing this gap in mind, the book focuses on research into personality traits in aptitude testing for interpreting, with an aim to expanding the objective means of testing candidates for the requisite knowledge and skills. It is devoted to an empirical investigation into the effects of personality hardiness on interpreting performance, with interpreting anxiety and self-efficacy as two intermediates. To this end, a quantitative method (questionnaire survey) and a qualitative in-depth interview were used with 149 Chinese student interpreters at postgraduate level. The results indicate that personality hardiness is a valuable trait for student interpreters. By systematically presenting the effects of personality hardiness on interpreting performance, the book offers both theoretical and empirical stepping stones to understanding the position of personality hardiness in aptitude testing for interpreting, providing stakeholders with valuable insights into and blueprints for selecting the most teachable candidates for interpreting training programs.
