Book Synopsis The Janus Faces of Genius by : Betty Jo Teeter Dobbs
Download or read book The Janus Faces of Genius written by Betty Jo Teeter Dobbs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major re-evaluation of Isaac Newton's intellectual life, Betty Jo Teeter Dobbs shows how his pioneering work in mathematics, physics, and cosmology was intertwined with his study of alchemy. Directing attention to the religious ambience of the alchemical enterprise of early modern Europe, Dobbs argues that Newton understood alchemy - and the divine activity in micromatter to which it spoke - to be a much needed corrective to the overly mechanized system of Descartes. The same religious basis underlay the rest of his work. To Newton it seemed possible to obtain partial truths from many different approaches to knowledge, be it textual work aimed at the interpretation of prophecy, the study of ancient theology and philosophy, creative mathematics, or experiments with prisms, pendulums, vegetating minerals, light, or electricity. Newton's work was a constant attempt to bring these partial truths together, with the larger goal of restoring true natural philosophy and true religion.

Book Synopsis The Tradition of Science by : Leonard C. Bruno
Download or read book The Tradition of Science written by Leonard C. Bruno and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any real understanding of where we stand scientifically today and where we are headed depends to a great extent on an awareness of how we reached those scientific achievements. The increased impact of science and technology on our lives makes such an understanding even more important. For this reason, this book is intended to provide information about the major works of science in the collections of the Library of Congress. These selected works are organized here by traditional scientific discipline and are treated in historical and, generally, chronological order. The contents contain chapters on: (1) astronomy; (2) botany; (3) zoology; (4) medicine; (5) chemistry; (6) geology; (7) mathematics; and (8) physics. A bibliography provides information about particular Library of Congress collections to which a book or manuscript may belong, as well as specific bibliographic information. Title translations are also included. (TW)

Book Synopsis Faith, Medical Alchemy and Natural Philosophy by : John T. Young
Download or read book Faith, Medical Alchemy and Natural Philosophy written by John T. Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998, this is a fundamental re-assessment of the world-view of the alchemists, natural philosophers and intelligencers of the mid 17th century. Based almost entirely upon the extensive and hitherto little-researched manuscript archive of Samuel Hartlib, it charts and contextualises the personal and intellectual history of Johann Moriaen (c.1592-1668), a Dutch-German alchemist and natural philosopher. Moriaen was closely acquainted with many of the leading thinkers and experimenters of his time, including René Descartes, J.A. Comenius, J.R. Glauber and J.S. Küffler. His detailed reports of relations with these figures and his response to their work provide a uniquely informed insight into the world of alchemy and natural philosophy. This study also illuminates the nature and mechanisms of intellectual and technological exchanges between Germany, The Netherlands and England.

Book Synopsis Marvell and Alchemy by : Lyndy Abraham
Download or read book Marvell and Alchemy written by Lyndy Abraham and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1990 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Abraham begins by examining the currency of alchemical thought in Britain and Europe and its presence in the work of such poets as Shakespeare, Jonson, Donne, Herrick, Milton and Dryden. She then moves on to a detailed examination of Marvell's long poems, demonstrating the extensive presentation of the alchemical process. Other important English alchemists are cited including Thomas Tymme, Robert Fludd and Thomas Vaughan. This is a highly original and stimulating study which brings out hitherto undiscovered meanings and relationships. The book is illustrated with 32 emblems from the works of the Renaissance and 17th-century alchemists, and will henceforth be an essential text for serious students of Marvell.
