Book Synopsis A User's Guide to Spectral Sequences by : John McCleary
Download or read book A User's Guide to Spectral Sequences written by John McCleary and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral sequences are among the most elegant and powerful methods of computation in mathematics. This book describes some of the most important examples of spectral sequences and some of their most spectacular applications. The first part treats the algebraic foundations for this sort of homological algebra, starting from informal calculations. The heart of the text is an exposition of the classical examples from homotopy theory, with chapters on the Leray-Serre spectral sequence, the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, the Adams spectral sequence, and, in this new edition, the Bockstein spectral sequence. The last part of the book treats applications throughout mathematics, including the theory of knots and links, algebraic geometry, differential geometry and algebra. This is an excellent reference for students and researchers in geometry, topology, and algebra.
Book Synopsis Steenrod Squares in Spectral Sequences by : William M. Singer
Download or read book Steenrod Squares in Spectral Sequences written by William M. Singer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a general theory of Steenrod operations in spectral sequences. It gives special attention to the change-of-rings spectral sequence for the cohomology of an extension of Hopf algebras and to the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence for the cohomology of classifying spaces and homotopy orbit spaces. In treating the change-of-rings spectral sequence, the book develops from scratch the necessary properties of extensions of Hopf algebras and constructs the spectral sequence in a form particularly suited to the introduction of Steenrod squares. The resulting theory can be used effectively for the computation of the cohomology rings of groups and Hopf algebras, and of the Steenrod algebra in particular, and so should play a useful role in stable homotopy theory. Similarly the book offers a self-contained construction of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, in a form suitable for the introduction of Steenrod operations. The corresponding theory is an effective tool for the computation of t

Book Synopsis Higher Homotopy Structures in Topology and Mathematical Physics by : James D. Stasheff
Download or read book Higher Homotopy Structures in Topology and Mathematical Physics written by James D. Stasheff and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the work of Stasheff and Sugawara in the 1960s on recognition of loop space structures on $H$-spaces, the notion of higher homotopies has grown to be a fundamental organizing principle in homotopy theory, differential graded homological algebra and even mathematical physics. This book presents the proceedings from a conference held on the occasion of Stasheff's 60th birthday at Vassar in June 1996. It offers a collection of very high quality papers and includes some fundamental essays on topics that open new areas.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on talks presented at the Summer School on Interactions between Homotopy theory and Algebra held at the University of Chicago in the summer of 2004. The goal of this book is to create a resource for background and for current directions of research related to deep connections between homotopy theory and algebra, including algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and representation theory. The articles in this book are aimed at the audience of beginning researchers with varied mathematical backgrounds and have been written with both the quality of exposition and the accessibility to novices in mind.

Book Synopsis Rational Homotopy Type by : Wen-tsün Wu
Download or read book Rational Homotopy Type written by Wen-tsün Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive monograph provides a self-contained treatment of the theory of I*-measure, or Sullivan's rational homotopy theory, from a constructive point of view. It centers on the notion of calculability which is due to the author himself, as are the measure-theoretical and constructive points of view in rational homotopy. The I*-measure is shown to differ from other homology and homotopy measures in that it is calculable with respect to most of the important geometric constructions encountered in algebraic topology. This approach provides a new method of treatment and leads to various new results. In particular, an axiomatic system of I*-measure is formulated, quite different in spirit from the usual Eilenberg-Steenrod axiomatic system for homology, and giving at the same time an algorithmic method of computation of the I*-measure in concrete cases. The book will be of interest to researchers in rational homotopy theory and will provide them with new ideas and lines of research to develop further.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Methods in Unstable Homotopy Theory by : Joseph Neisendorfer
Download or read book Algebraic Methods in Unstable Homotopy Theory written by Joseph Neisendorfer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most modern and thorough treatment of unstable homotopy theory available. The focus is on those methods from algebraic topology which are needed in the presentation of results, proven by Cohen, Moore, and the author, on the exponents of homotopy groups. The author introduces various aspects of unstable homotopy theory, including: homotopy groups with coefficients; localization and completion; the Hopf invariants of Hilton, James, and Toda; Samelson products; homotopy Bockstein spectral sequences; graded Lie algebras; differential homological algebra; and the exponent theorems concerning the homotopy groups of spheres and Moore spaces. This book is suitable for a course in unstable homotopy theory, following a first course in homotopy theory. It is also a valuable reference for both experts and graduate students wishing to enter the field.
Book Synopsis Algebra, Topology, and Category Theory by : Alex Heller
Download or read book Algebra, Topology, and Category Theory written by Alex Heller and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra, Topology, and Category Theory: A Collection of Papers in Honor of Samuel Eilenberg is a collection of papers dealing with algebra, topology, and category theory in honor of Samuel Eilenberg. Topics covered range from large modules over artin algebras to two-dimensional Poincaré duality groups, along with the homology of certain H-spaces as group ring objects. Variable quantities and variable structures in topoi are also discussed. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins by looking at the relationship between the representation theories of finitely generated and large (not finitely generated) modules over an artin algebra. The reader is then introduced to reduced bar constructions on deRham complexes; some properties of two-dimensional Poincaré duality groups; and properties invariant within equivalence types of categories. Subsequent chapters explore the work of Samuel Eilenberg in topology; local complexity of finite semigroups; global dimension of ore extensions; and the spectrum of a ringed topos. This monograph will be a useful resource for students and practitioners of algebra and mathematics.
