Book excerpt: How does the Christian proclamation of salvation in Jesus Christ relate to the lives of the people who suffer most? Does salvation consist entirely of the hope for eternal life with God? How might the church effectively preach the message of salvation in Christ today? In Jesus and Salvation, Robin Ryan adopts a historical approach to these questions, discussing key themes and classic authors in the developing tradition about Christ the Savior. He examines modern soteriology by engaging the thought of Karl Rahner, Edward Schillebeeckx, Gustavo Gutiérrez, and Elizabeth Johnson. He also discusses contemporary conceptions of salvation within an evolutionary view of the cosmos as well as issues related to the Christian confession of Jesus as universal savior in a religiously pluralistic world. Ryan concludes by offering his own reflections on the meaning of salvation from God in Jesus Christ. By understanding salvation in Christ as both gift and call, Ryan invites readers to recognize in the saving grace of God a responsibility for the well-being of the human family and the rest of creation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Salvation I Every institution, whether secular or religious, has certain fundamental principles that determine its character, and out of which everything connected with it of a practical nature naturally and necessarily springs. In order to a clear and comprehensive view Of the system, it is of the utmost importance to Obtain a proper understanding of its great elementary fundamental principles. These truths find strong confirmation when applied to the religion of the Lord Jesus Christ. In order to a clear understanding of its character, and an adequate conception of its practical applications and possible blessings, a knowledge of certain fundamental matters called First Principles is imperative; It is the purpose of this volume to give; not, perhaps, an exhaustive, but a somewhat comprehensive, view of The First Principles of the Gospel of Christ, beginning with a consideration of the recog nized moral malady of sin, thence passing Onward to a study of the divine remedy as revealed in the gospel, thus tracing the path in the progress of the soul from the state of deprav ity even unto the blessed consummation of a perfect character; or, in other words, considering the steps in the journey of man from the Paradise Lost to the Paradise Regained. Book excerpt: “A NOVEL FOR LIFE AFTER THE PANDEMIC…Scratches a particular imaginative itch that we are all experiencing at the precipice of a new era." -- The New Yorker From the National Book Award-winning author of The Friend comes a moving and eerily relevant novel that imagines the aftermath of a pandemic virus as seen through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy uncertain of his destiny. His family's sole survivor after a flu pandemic has killed large numbers of people worldwide, Cole Vining is lucky to have found refuge with the evangelical Pastor Wyatt and his wife in a small town in southern Indiana. As the world outside has grown increasingly anarchic, Salvation City has been spared much of the devastation, and its residents have renewed their preparations for the Rapture. Grateful for the shelter and love of his foster family (and relieved to have been saved from the horrid, overrun orphanages that have sprung up around the country), Cole begins to form relationships within the larger community. But despite his affection for this place, he struggles with memories of the very different world in which he was reared. Is there room to love both Wyatt and his parents? Are they still his parents if they are no longer there? As others around him grow increasingly fixated on the hope of salvation and the new life to come through the imminent Rapture, Cole begins to conceive of a different future for himself, one in which his own dreams of heroism seem within reach. Written in Sigrid Nunez's deceptively simple style, Salvation City is a story of love, betrayal, and forgiveness, weaving the deeply affecting story of a young boy's transformation with a profound meditation on the meaning of belief and heroism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, Robert A. Peterson taught about the assurance of salvation in seminary and Sunday school classrooms. He was concerned, however, to find that some people who, for a variety of reasons, were unable to grasp the certainty of their salvation. The Assurance of Salvation identifies these "troublers" of assurance and provides the remedy to diffuse insecurity. Peterson asserts that difficult backgrounds and experiences, intellectual doubts, tender consciences, habitual sins, and overconfidence that people face are the enemies of assurance. Through a competent handling of the Bible, he explains that by embracing three gifts from God--His Word, His Spirit, and His work in our lives--those who struggle with insecurity are able to personally experience the freedom of God's assurance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Plan of Salvation We have made no effort at elegance of style, seeking rather to clearly and forciéb/ express as muck truth as possible in the space occupied. We dare not hope that every thought is expressed in the best possible manner; but he who reads to be benefited will likely understand us, and for such readers only were our labors intended. If we have not Spoken as the oracles of God speak, then prove all things, and hold fast that which is good. By the word of God we are ever willing that our teaching may be tried. It alone can build us up and give us an inheritance among them who are sanctified hence to it we commend our readers in the fear of Him who will judge us all according to our works. "Instead, it presents us with a variety of pictures taken from different perspectives." Students of the New Testament and of theology will both find their vision broadened and their understanding deepened by this rich, informative study. As the author seeks to understand their implications for people of faith, she uncovers how New Testament images provide the building blocks of the master story of redemption.
