Book excerpt: In this monograph the author presents explicit conditions for the exponential, absolute and input-to-state stabilities including solution estimates of certain types of functional differential equations. The main methodology used is based on a combination of recent norm estimates for matrix-valued functions, comprising the generalized Bohl-Perron principle, together with its integral version and the positivity of fundamental solutions. A significant part of the book is especially devoted to the solution of the generalized Aizerman problem.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of my lecture notes, Functional Differential Equations in the Applied Mathematical Sciences series, many new developments have occurred. As a consequence, it was decided not to make a few corrections and additions for a second edition of those notes, but to present a more compre hensive theory. The present work attempts to consolidate those elements of the theory which have stabilized and also to include recent directions of research. The following chapters were not discussed in my original notes. Chapter 1 is an elementary presentation of linear differential difference equations with constant coefficients of retarded and neutral type. Chapter 4 develops the recent theory of dissipative systems. Chapter 9 is a new chapter on perturbed systems. Chapter 11 is a new presentation incorporating recent results on the existence of periodic solutions of autonomous equations. Chapter 12 is devoted entirely to neutral equations. Chapter 13 gives an introduction to the global and generic theory. There is also an appendix on the location of the zeros of characteristic polynomials. The remainder of the material has been completely revised and updated with the most significant changes occurring in Chapter 3 on the properties of solutions, Chapter 5 on stability, and Chapter lOon behavior near a periodic orbit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features new results and up-to-date advances in modeling and solving differential equations Introducing the various classes of functional differential equations, Functional Differential Equations: Advances and Applications presents the needed tools and topics to study the various classes of functional differential equations and is primarily concerned with the existence, uniqueness, and estimates of solutions to specific problems. The book focuses on the general theory of functional differential equations, provides the requisite mathematical background, and details the qualitative behavior of solutions to functional differential equations. The book addresses problems of stability, particularly for ordinary differential equations in which the theory can provide models for other classes of functional differential equations, and the stability of solutions is useful for the application of results within various fields of science, engineering, and economics. Functional Differential Equations: Advances and Applications also features: • Discussions on the classes of equations that cannot be solved to the highest order derivative, and in turn, addresses existence results and behavior types • Oscillatory motion and solutions that occur in many real-world phenomena as well as in man-made machines • Numerous examples and applications with a specific focus on ordinary differential equations and functional differential equations with finite delay • An appendix that introduces generalized Fourier series and Fourier analysis after periodicity and almost periodicity • An extensive Bibliography with over 550 references that connects the presented concepts to further topical exploration Functional Differential Equations: Advances and Applications is an ideal reference for academics and practitioners in applied mathematics, engineering, economics, and physics. The book is also an appropriate textbook for graduate- and PhD-level courses in applied mathematics, differential and difference equations, differential analysis, and dynamics processes. Book excerpt: Stability and Time-Optimal Control of Hereditary Systems is the mathematical foundation and theory required for studying in depth the stability and optimal control of systems whose history is taken into account. In this edition, the economic application is enlarged, and explored in some depth. The application holds out the hope that full employment and high income growth will be compatible with low prices and low inflation, provided that the control matrix has full rank, i.e., the existing controls are fully effectively used. The book concludes with a new appendix containing complete programs, data, graphs and quantitative results for the US economy.

This book covers a variety of topics, including geometric and qualitative theory, analytic theory, functional differential equation, dynamical systems, and algebraic theory. Organized into two parts encompassing 51 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the results on the existence of periodic solutions of a differential equation. This text then describes an index for the isolated invariant sets of a flow on a compact metric space, which contains exactly the information of the Morse index. Other chapters consider the studies of certain classes of equations that can be interpreted as models of biological or economic processes. This book discusses as well the absolute stability of some classes of integro-differential systems. The final chapter deals with first-order differential equations. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians, graduate students, and research workers.

Book excerpt: Dynamical Systems: An International Symposium, Volume 2 contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Dynamical Systemsheld at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on August 12-16, 1974. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing the theory of dynamical systems in relation to ordinary and functional differential equations, as well as the influence of this approach and the techniques of ordinary differential equations on research concerning certain types of partial differential equations and evolutionary equations in general. Comprised of six chapters, this volume first examines how the theory of isolating blocks may be applied to the Newtonian planar three-body problem. The reader is then introduced to the separatrix structure for regions attracted to solitary periodic solutions; solitary invariant sets; and singular points and separatrices. Subsequent chapters focus on the equivalence of suspensions and manifolds with cross section; a geometrical approach to classical mechanics; bifurcation theory for odd potential operators; and continuous dependence of fixed points of condensing maps. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of applied mathematics.
