Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physical Geography There are good textbooks on physical geography, but there are many teachers and school departments not satisfied with any of them. The author has endeavored to meet the require ments of these teachers as far as such needs could be ascertained. With a subject as broad as physical geography there will al ways be lack of uniformity in the manner of presentation, as well (as in the subject matter. The subject is one which is undergoing many changes, and it is possible that both the teachers and the subject may be ahead of present textbooks in many particulars. Every class in physical geography should have more or less laboratory and field work associated with the textbook. One of the functions of the textbook not the only one, by any means is to serve as a handbook, which the pupil studies as an aid in the interpretation of what he sees in the labora tory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography While, therefore, adhering to a systematic treat ment, I have been led to dwell, for example, on the phenomena of the atmosphere at much greater length than is usual in elementary class-books. These 'phenomena are among the most familiar and uni versal features of the globe; examples of them can be constantly adduced, and they may thus be used with singular advantage to illustrate how the facts of science are observed and its laws are deduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Professor Merrill adds a manual to the list that appears to fill a need in the schools arising from the fact that some of the manuals already published are too elementary and some are too far advanced. That is, some of them require too much purely mechanical work, giving the impression that the object is to occupy the hands of the pupil regardless of whether the exercise illustrates any principles or leads to any conclusions. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the Whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other. It is a step in the right direction and I hope it may prove serviceable to all who use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The individual teacher must lead in supplementing the text on this theme, since the material is largely in books, and the selection depends on the school library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography For some time there have been indications that new textbooks on physical geography are demanded; and in the report of the Committee of Ten this finds definite expression. In the preparation of this book, which has been in hand for several years, there is an attempt to meet this apparent demand; but for reasons which are obvious to many, it has not seemed wise to attempt to follow the somewhat radical suggestions which were made by the majority of the geography conference of the Committee of Ten. Therefore, while the physiographic side is given more prominence than is customary in works of this kind, this book attempts to only partly meet the Committees suggestions. In the preparation of the book, effort has been made to introduce new material, particularly in the illustrations, which are a prominent part of the book. Also, there has been an endeavor to make the book scientifically accurate, and to introduce the latest knowledge on the subjects treated. There are probably places in which this is not done, for the field is so large that much must be compilation; and the compiler is liable to fall into error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Lessons in Physical Geography The exercises presented in this manual are intended to be sufficient for a full year's work, but they are so written that some may be omitted by classes that have not time for all, without detriment to those remaining. It is intended that the pages of questions and directions be bound with the answer papers in the notebook. In some exercises where the answers are short, blank spaces are left on the printed page that the answers may be written immediately after the questions. The loose leaf plan of binding gives Opportunity not only for the omission of exercises not needed, but also for the inser tion of such other exercises as any teacher may choose to give. To the same end, and also that the exercises may be taken in the order in which the topics are studied, the exercises are not numbered. Reference may be made to them by the page numbers at the bottom of the page. Pupils should pre serve all their papers, and at the end of the course arrange them in order, number the pages at the top, and write on the Table of Contents sheet (pp. 191, 192) the number, name, and pages of each exercise. The teacher will probably wish to examine and comment on each exercise as soon as it is done. The binding margin is a convenient place for marks, and also for the pupil's name, but the pupil must be careful not to let his writing run into this margin. Some of the exercises require heat, water, and considerable apparatus - not always to be had at each pupil's desk. It is suggested that such exercises be assigned, the day before they are to be done, to several pupils, who shall have the preparations complete, and perform the experiments in the presence of_the class. All members of the class should then write up the exercise. Most of the exercises have questions at the end called Advanced. These questions are usually more difficult than those preced ing, and are intended for the rapid workers who finish the main questions before the majority of the class are through. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Physical Geography Physical Geography as a school subject is concerned properly with those aspects of the Earth which determine or influence the life of man. It necessarily touches other departments of natural knowledge at many points, but in the following lessons the contributory sciences of astronomy, geology, meteorology, and physics are introduced only to the extent necessary to make clear some of the more obvious ways in which human life is affected by natural phenomena. Educationally regarded, Geography is a practical science: practical, since it cannot be studied satisfactorily without the personal performance of observational and experimental exercises designed to lead the student to discover for himself fundamental facts and principles; a science, in that the data with which it deals can be applied convincingly to man's needs only when their place in an orderly sequence of cause and effect is duly appreciated. The practical exercises set out at the beginning of the various sections of the book have been framed to lead each student to become - within the limits of the course of study - an independent observer able to reason intelligently on the facts he encounters. The descriptive text which follows each set of exercises provides a means of checking the results obtained and the conclusions arrived at by the student. It is urged that, although the descriptive portions of the volume will be found complete as a text-book, much of the educational value of their study will be lost by students who neglect the practical work.
