Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Mandarin-Romanized Dictionary of Chinese: Including New Terms and Phrases, Now Current The learner having heard a word, or still better, two or more in combination, will find that this dictionary comes to his help even in the absence of teacher, first, that he may understand what he has heard second, that he may ascertain its written form without laborious searching in the Radical indexes and huge dictionaries; and third, he may at the same time find a group of phrases more or less related to the one he has just heard. When a phrase is found the student should glance through the whole group where he will often find other equivalents or related phrases which he would like to learn at the same time. It is a good plan to look up the second, third, and fourth characters in a phrase as found under their own separate headings and thus pleasantly enlarge his acquire ments. To suppose a case: The learner has heard the expression f E Q i. If he can, from hearing, judge that the first sound is An, he turns at once to Au, and under it he finds the phrase in question together with its relatives, and at the same time a ready road to larger dictionaries. To suppose another case: in reading he finds the character f. If he knows its sound he may at once find it and its group as in the preceding case. But if he does not recognize it, a reference to the radical index at the back will at once show where the character and its group are to be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Mandarin-Romanized Dictionary of Chinese While belonging to the British Legation Escort in Peking in 1869, Mr. Stent first discovered a taste for the study of Chinese. Chiefly in its colloquial form, and his aptitude and perseverance received their first encouragement from Mr. (afterwards Sir Thomas) Wade, British Minister to Peking, himself famous for his 5 53 or Colloquial Lessons and other works on Chinese. Mr. Stent then joined the Foreign Customs Service, serving successively at Chefoo, Shanghai, Wenchow, and Swatow. Early in 1882 he was appointed to Takow, Formosa, and in May, 1883, he became assistant-in-charge of the Customs at that port, which post he continued to hold till Ist September, 1884, the day of his death. His chief literary work was his Chinese and English Vocabulary in the Pekingese Dialect. He early showed a taste for colloquial novels, and began making a collection of phrases on the plan now so well-known, and followed in all subsequent editions. The first edition came out in 1871 and the second in 1877. Its popularity was evident from the begin ning. In 1874 he also published a Chinese and English Pocket Dictionary. The lessons are graded as slowly, as the limited space, and introduction of as many new words as possible, would allow. The lessons are on a variety of subjects, and include a great many sentences used. In ordinary conversation. Gospel truths have been introduced as far as practicable. The Chinese portion is in the Canton dialect, which is the spoken language of the Chinese in America, Australia, and the Sandwich Islands. The object of using this dialect, instead of the more elegant style of their language, is'to give the learner the meaning of the English in plain and simple words, such as he himself would use in expressing the same thing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chinese and English Vocabulary in the Pekinese Dialect Many characters in common use will be found in this hook that are not recognised by dictionaries. I have used them, however, as I consider them indispensable, and placed them under the radicals they naturally belong to. It has also been a principle with me not to admit any characters but those actually known to my teacher without reference to books - a principle adopted on the ground that if a well informed Chinese did not know a character or word and its meaning without such reference, it could not possibly be in common use, and was therefore superfluous to my present purpose and not necessary for a foreign beginner to learn. In some places, too, meanings have been given to. Words utterly at variance with the definitions given in previous dictionaries, for I have preferred giving them as they are really used now, rather than meanings which probably were in use formerly, but which are now obsolete, though still retained in diction aries drawn chiefly from ancient writings. It may appear presumptuous in me to venture to alter meanings which have been recognised in books for so many years, but if several teachers, at different times and places, and unknown to each other, decide unanimously in giving one meaning to a character or word, and I know that meaning to be in general use, I give it in preference to an obsolete one, even though it has the sanction of a dictionary. I feel assured that persons who have studied Chinese for any length of time will endorse the Opinion, that there are numerous characters, some even with no sound or meaning, others that are obsolete; also that there are numbers of characters in general use, but with many of the meanings obsolete, or altogether different from those generally used; and that the expunging of soundless, meaningless and obsolete characters as worthless, and the alteration of disused meanings to suit the requirements of the present time, would not only condense a dictionary as regards size and usefulness, but be of material benefit in regard to its correctness and uniformity with the style of language now used, and facilitate the finding of characters and meaningsthat are really useful. This of course is simply a suggestion and the perfect working of it out involves a task worthy of some far abler hand than mine.
