Book excerpt: Meet Bibli, a brave little library bookshelf in search of a story about someone like him . . . Once upon a time, in a library like any other, there lived a little bookshelf named Bibli who carried a BIG question on his shelves: "Could there be a story somewhere about a bookshelf like me?" Bibli is told that bookshelves are supposed to hold stories, not have ones of their own. But everything changes when he meets Cassie, a girl longing for a friend just as much as Bibli longs for a story to relate to. Bibli learns that with kindness, confidence, empathy, and friendship, even your biggest dreams can come true--and that everyone has an important story worth sharing. The Friendly Bookshelf is a social-emotional learning (SEL) research-based book and the first-ever picture book about a bookshelf. Written to build self-confidence and self-esteem as well as encourage inclusivity, Bibli's story empowers children to be brave, be a friend, and always be your-shelf! Readers will be inspired to go beyond the final page of the book and share their own stories, as well as be the pioneers of a kinder, more inclusive world where everybody (and every bookshelf!) belongs.

Download or read book Bookshelf written by Lydia Pyne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Every shelf is different and every bookshelf tells a different story. One bookshelf can creak with character in a bohemian coffee shop and another can groan with gravitas in the Library of Congress. Writer and historian Lydia Pyne finds bookshelves to be holders not just of books but of so many other things: values, vibes, and verbs that can be contained and displayed in the buildings and rooms of contemporary human existence. With a shrewd eye toward this particular moment in the history of books, Pyne takes the reader on a tour of the bookshelf that leads critically to this juncture: amid rumors of the death of book culture, why is the life of the bookshelf in full bloom? Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's Bookshelf: Suggestions on Children's Reading, With an Annotated, List of Books on Heroism, Service, Patriotism, Friendliness, Joy and Beauty This Bibliography is intended to help those who desire to build up a good library for their children's home use. The books are those which might find a place on any playroom shelves. Ordinary lesson books are not included for obvious reasons of space, as well as for lack of expert knowledge; neither are ordinary story books. With books such as are here suggested as a basis and a background, tales of passing interest will find their own place. And children need not be confined to children's books, even of the best. It is no negligible part of true education to be able sometimes to browse in a good library of general literature and choose for oneself. Some system of grading seemed advisable, but, on the other hand, the best children's books are those which are read and re-read at different stages, and for these no definite age-limit can be given. The letters in italics following publisher and price suggest the ages to which the book appears suited, the five letters, a, b, c, d, e, being taken as roughly indicating five two-year periods in the years between five and fifteen. Thus the letters "be" after a book denote that it will probably be appreciated by children of from seven co eleven. A few books for parents or teachers are marked "T." Any list of this kind to be of value must be kept continually up to date. Every effort has been made to ascertain revised prions, but, oh mg to the present increasing cost of production, a further rise may be expected in some cases. Where a book is known to be only temporarily out of print this is stated. No attempt has been made to enumerate all the editions of books referred to. Attention is drawn to those which seemed to the compiler satisfactory, but others equally good may in some cases have escaped her notice.
