Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child of Tuscany Day have the good fortune to know the quaint and beautiful city where I have laid the scene of this little story; for among all the cities of Europe there is none more interesting, and which people learn to love better, than Florence, Florence, the fairest and most famous of the daughters of Rome! As Dante calls her. You have doubtless seen on your maps that Florence is situated in the northern part of Italy. It is a city of noble antiquity, having existed, some historians tell us, as early as the Roman period. In the twelfth century it was already the most important town of Tuscany, and after wards became the capital of the independent duchy of that name; and there the princes and dukes held their court. In 1861 all the provinces of Italy were united into one kingdom under Victor Emmanuel, and the court was removed to Rome, 1870. But Florence is still visited every spring by many of the nobility of Europe, on account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I might have added that as the Bible says that the last shall be first, and the first shall be last, those at the head and the tail have some hope of relief, if their present situation is not satisfactory; but those who are in the middle have evidently no prospect Of change and must bear their trials for ever. Herr Baedeker loves the train; Mr. Murray, disembodied from the fetters of time and space, seems to flit from museum to museum, no eye remarking his means of locomotion; the late Professor Ruskin seldom left the pulpit; the late Mr. Grant Allen never left the schoolroom. You must, indeed, go back to the old road-books of our grandfathers' day, which made the mile stones their first object of interest, the turnpikes their second, the inns their third, and crowded into the last column their references to Livy, Politian, Virgil, Catullus, Dante, and Slawken bergius, their lapidary lore, temples of Vesta, and battlefields of Hannibal; and in the notes might or might not tell you that Raphael's Saz'm' Ce ez'lz'a was in the gallery of Bologna, and Giulio Romano's War of Me Giants at Mantua remark ably fine. I have abandoned the mile-stones, the turnpikes; but I have never lain at a good inn without saying so, and as for Dante and Virgil, I Should like to know the man who could travel any part of Italy north of the Tiber and keep them out of the country; rather, I had better'say, I should not like to know him at all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child of Pleasure D'annunzio comes to remind us, very definitely, as only an Italian can, of the reality and the beauty of sen sation, of the primary sensations; the sensations of pain and pleasure as these come to us from our actual physi cal conditions; the sensation of beauty as it comes to us from the sight of our eyes and the tasting of our several senses; the sensation of love, coming up from a root in Boccaccio, through the stem of Petrarch, to the very flower of Dante. And so he becomes the idealist of ma terial things, while seeming to materialize spiritual things. He accepts, as no one else of our time does, the whole physical basis of life, the spirit which can be known only through the body, the body which is but clay in the shaping or destroying hands of the spirit. And, in Spite of a certain affectation of ideas, not always quite happily selected from Nietzsche and others, he takes nature very simply, getting sheer away from civil ization in his bodily consciousness of things, which he apprehends as directly, with however much added sub tlety, as a peasant of his own Abruzzi. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER In Renaissance Florence, a young artist searching for her missing mother is discovered by arch-rivals Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci In Tuscany during the early 1500s, Beatrice, a peasant girl, finds herself alone in the countryside after her father is killed and her mother disappears into the walled city of Florence. Barefoot and defiant, Beatrice enters the city to sell her family’s olive oil to the artists who toil to create masterworks that will elevate the status of the republic. While selling her wares, Beatrice befriends Michelangelo as he struggles to sculpt David and helps heal a melancholic woman who is having her portrait painted by the brilliant but aging Leonardo. Bonds deepen even while Michelangelo and Leonardo are pitted against each other in a competition organized by Machiavelli. Set during five epic years, Tuscan Daughter reveals the humanity and struggles of a young woman who longs to find the only family she has left while seeking to be an artist in her own right. In her own way, Beatrice influences the artistic masters of the time to find peace with their inner demons as they stake everything on the power of beauty to transform and inspire.

And, as we find from the historians, without surprise, all the means which were adopted for the remedy of these evils only seemed to make matters worse. The gathering of. Masses of the people in processions and in the churches to implore the interposition of the Virgin did not stay the pestilence; and the prohibition of all commercial intercourse or trans port of commodities, failed to alleviate the scarcity. But though we may not be astonished at these phenomena, the seventeenth-century Tuscans were so. It was a terrible disgrazia, a tremendous indi cation that the favour of Heaven was withdrawn from the land. And every man saw in the general afliction a castigation due to the sins of his neighbours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Quite simply one of the best books of the year." —Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Ben Downing's Queen Bee of Tuscany brings an extraordinary Victorian back to life. Born into a distinguished intellectual family and raised among luminaries such as Dickens and Thackeray, Janet Ross married at eighteen and went to live in Egypt. There, for the next six years, she wrote for the London Times, hobnobbed with the developer of the Suez Canal, and humiliated pashas in horse races. In 1867 she moved to Florence, Italy where she spent the remaining sixty years of her life writing a series of books and hosting a colorful miscellany of friends and neighbors, from Mark Twain to Bernard Berenson, at Poggio Gherardo, her house in the hills above the city. Eventually she became the acknowledged doyenne of the Anglo-Florentine colony, as it was known. Yet she was also immersed in the rural life of Tuscany: An avid agriculturalist, she closely supervised the farms on her estate and the sharecroppers who worked them, often pitching in on grape and olive harvests. Spirited, erudite, and supremely well-connected, Ross was one of the most dynamic women of her day. Her life offers a fascinating window on fascinating times, from the Risorgimento to the rise of fascism. Encompassing all this rich history, Queen Bee of Tuscany is a panoramic portrait of an age, a family, and our evolving love affair with Tuscany. A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2013

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roadside Songs of Tuscany, Vol. 1: The Story of Lucia A great many years which I have passed in constant intercourse with the Tuscan contadini. They are but the so to say, of hundreds and hundreds which I have heard and learnt, mostly from old people: many of them have never, so far as I know, been written down before, and others it would be impossible now to find. A great many were taught me by the celebrated improvisatrice, Beatrice Bernardi of Pian degli Ontani, whose portrait I have placed in the beginning of the book, - one of the most wonderful women whom I ever knew. This Beatrice was the daughter of a stonemason at Melo, a little village of not very easy access on the mountain side above Cutigliano.
