Book excerpt: A new double cantilever beam specimen with a chevron notch (short bar) has been developed to measure the fracture toughness, (or resistance), GIc, of ceramicmetal interfaces. The analysis of the specimen is based on previously developed compliance calibrations for homogeneous materials. Toughness measurements on a zinc-silicate glass ceramic-molybdenum system demonstrated that the bond at this interface is as tough (13 J/m2) as the glass ceramic alone. Measurements on a lithium silicate glass ceramic-Hastelloy 276 metal system showed that the toughness of the interface depends on the degree of bonding ranging from 19 J/m2 for weak bonding to 54 J/m2 for strong bonding. This specimen is being suggested for use in the study of the effect of heat treatment and bonding chemistry on fracture of metal-ceramic interfaces.

Book excerpt: The chevron-notched diametrally compressed disk specimen has been used to measure the fracture toughness of zirconia/zirconia bonds and zirconia/nodular-cast-iron bonds. The data are reasonably consistent with experience obtained using monolithic ceramics. In particular, the strain energy release rate increases with increasing shear:tension ratio, and the opening-mode fracture toughness measured using the disks is generally within 20% of the value obtained with bend beams. However, the shear toughnesses of the bonds investigated are approximately 2.4 times the opening toughness, a ratio somewhat higher than that for monolithic ceramics. The high ratio can be attributed to rubbing of mutually opposed crack faces, deviation of the fracture plane into higher-toughness zirconia prior to instability for the ceramic/ceramic bonds, and shear of the braze-metal interlayer in the case of the metal/ceramic bonds.

Book excerpt: As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomistics of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

Book excerpt: A relatively new plane-strain fracture toughness test method based on chevron-notched test specimens has created a keen interest in comparing toughness measurements by the new method against measurements by the conventional method (ASTM E 399). Tests of various aluminum alloys by the two methods have shown a divergence in test results at the higher toughness levels. The rising R-curve effect in tough aluminums has been cited as one of the factors contributing to the observed discrepancy. This paper shows why the chevron-notched test results are independent of rising R-curve effects, whereas ASTM E 399 tests often are not. The E 399 test dependence on the rising R-curve constitutes a specimen size effect, and this dependence is partly responsible for the divergence between chevron-notched and E 399 tests of tougher aluminums. The chevron-notched method produces the toughness values which would be obtained from E 399 measurements if sufficiently large E 399 specimens could be tested.

Book excerpt: Plane-strain fracture toughness measurements were made on aluminum oxide using short-rod and short-bar chevron-notched specimens previously calibrated by the authors for their dimensionless stress intensity factor coefficients. The measured toughness varied systematically with variations in specimen size, proportions, and chevron notch angle apparently due to their influence on the amount of crack extension to maximum load (the measurement point). The toughness variations are explained in terms of a suspected rising R-curve for the material tested, along with a discussion of an unavoidable imprecision in the calculation of KIc for materials with rising R-curves when tested with chevron-notched specimens.

Book excerpt: Ease of preparation and testing are advantages unique to the chevron-notch specimen used for the determination of the plane strain fracture toughness of extremely brittle materials. During testing, a crack develops at the notch tip and extends stably as the load is increased. For a given specimen and notch configuration, maximum load always occurs at the same relative crack length independent of the material. Fracture toughness is determined from the maximum load with no need for crack length measurement. Chevron notch acuity is relatively unimportant since a crack is produced during specimen loading. In this paper, the authors use their previously determined stress intensity factor relationship for the chevron-notch short bar specimen to examine the performance of that specimen in determining the plane strain fracture toughness of silicon nitride and aluminum oxide.
