Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemometrics is the chemical discipline that uses mathematical, statistical and other methods employing formal logic: to design or select optimal measurement procedures and experiments, and -- to provide maximum relevant chemical information by analysing chemical data. Being conceived as a branch of analytical chemistry, chemometrics now is a general approach. It extracts relevant information out of measured data, regardless of their origin: chemical, physical, biological, etc. Chemometrics has been applied in different areas, and most successfully in multivariate calibration, pattern recognition, classification and discriminant analysis, multivariate modelling, and monitoring of processes. The main chemometric principle is a concept of hidden data structures that can be found using methods of multivariate data analysis. These are the well-known statistic tools such as partial least squares (PLS), soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA), principal-component regression (PCR), wavelet analysis, and many others. Current activities of chemometricians fall into two main categories: (1) development of new methods for manipulating multivariate data and (2) new applications of the known chemometric techniques in different areas such as environment control, food industry, agriculture, medicine, and engineering.

Book excerpt: Computational Intelligence (CI) and Bioprocess are well-established research areas which have much to offer each other. Under the perspective of the CI area, Biop- cess can be considered a vast application area with a growing number of complex and challenging tasks to be dealt with, whose solutions can contribute to boosting the development of new intelligent techniques as well as to help the refinement and s- cialization of many of the already existing techniques. Under the perspective of the Bioprocess area, CI can be considered a useful repertoire of theories, methods and techniques that can contribute and offer interesting alternative approaches for solving many of its problems, particularly those hard to solve using conventional techniques. Although throughout the past years CI and Bioprocess areas have accumulated substantial specific knowledge and progress has been quick and with a high degree of success, we believe there is still a long way to go in order to use the potentialities of the available CI techniques and knowledge at their full extent, as tools for supporting problem solving in bioprocesses. One of the reasons is the fact that both areas have progressed steadily and have been continuously accumulating and refining specific knowledge; another reason is the high level of technical expertise demanded by each of them. The acquisition of technical skills, experience and good insights in either of the two areas is very demanding and a hard task to be accomplished by any professional.

Book excerpt: Statistical Process Monitoring Using Advanced Data-Driven and Deep Learning Approaches tackles multivariate challenges in process monitoring by merging the advantages of univariate and traditional multivariate techniques to enhance their performance and widen their practical applicability. The book proceeds with merging the desirable properties of shallow learning approaches – such as a one-class support vector machine and k-nearest neighbours and unsupervised deep learning approaches – to develop more sophisticated and efficient monitoring techniques. Finally, the developed approaches are applied to monitor many processes, such as waste-water treatment plants, detection of obstacles in driving environments for autonomous robots and vehicles, robot swarm, chemical processes (continuous stirred tank reactor, plug flow rector, and distillation columns), ozone pollution, road traffic congestion, and solar photovoltaic systems. Uses a data-driven based approach to fault detection and attribution Provides an in-depth understanding of fault detection and attribution in complex and multivariate systems Familiarises you with the most suitable data-driven based techniques including multivariate statistical techniques and deep learning-based methods Includes case studies and comparison of different methods

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is increasing pressure on the water infrastructure and although unsustainable water extraction and wastewater handling can continue for a while, at some point water needs to be managed in a way that is sustainable in the long-term. We need to handle water utilities “smarter”. New and effective tools and technologies are becoming available at an affordable cost and these technologies are steadily changing water infrastructure options. The quality and robustness of sensors are increasing rapidly and their reliability makes the automatic handling of critical processes viable. Online and real-time control means safer and more effective operation. The combination of better sensors and new water treatment technologies is a strong enabler for decentralised and diversified water treatment. Plants can be run with a minimum of personnel attendance. In the future, thousands of sensors in the water utility cycle will handle all the complexity in an effective way. Smart Water Utilities: Complexity Made Simple provides a framework for Smart Water Utilities based on an M-A-D (Measurement-Analysis-Decision). This enables the organisation and implementation of “Smart” in a water utility by providing an overview of supporting technologies and methods. The book presents an introduction to methods and tools, providing a perspective of what can and could be achieved. It provides a toolbox for all water challenges and is essential reading for the Water Utility Manager, Engineer and Director and for Consultants, Designers and Researchers.

Book excerpt: Traditional pharmaceutical development is an unwieldy process requiring extensive experimentation and long lead times before process scientists can fully understand the effect that process parameters such as pH, temperature, cell viability, or process yield may have on the product acceptability. Implementation of quality by design is a science-based approach that allows the operating ranges and the acceptance criteria to be established based on the impact on product quality attributes. During manufacturing, process monitoring becomes part of a continuous verification effort and statistical control limits can be used to signal potential trends or drifts in the process. Single manufacturing batches that are aberrant are readily identified. The melding of scientific understanding, information systems architecture, instrumentation, software, and personnel training provides a large return on investment by ensuring that the manufacturing process produces a consistent pharmaceutical product that meets acceptable release standards for human use. Book excerpt: The need for water quality information is increasingly being met by systems mainly based on automated measurement devices. In order to discuss the state of the art and the future possibilities the AutMoNet 2002 conference was organized to enhance the dialogue between water specialists, plant operators, chemists and instrument suppliers. This interdisciplinary dialogue is essential for the development of solutions for water quality management. The scientific program of AutMoNet 2002 covered a wide range of topics from leading edge sensor technology, wise use of novel technology, data to information transfer, successful end-user applications in municipal water quality management, environmental monitoring, to water system security; the topics were originally presented in 4 sessions: instrumentation, novel sensors and measurement concepts; transforming data into information; on-line analysis in municipal water management; and on-line analysis in environmental monitoring. This issue of Water Science & Technology presents the highlights of the conference: the 4 keynote presentations, and 19 oral presentations selected after peer review. These papers will prove an invaluable resource for researchers into sensor technology, telemetry and chemistry and for plant operators and managers from across the water and wastewater industry.
