Book Synopsis A History of Tasmania, from Its Discovery in 1642 to the Present Time by : James Fenton
Download or read book A History of Tasmania, from Its Discovery in 1642 to the Present Time written by James Fenton and published by . This book was released on 1884 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Fenton (1820-1901) was born in Ireland and emigrated to Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen's Land) with his family in 1833. He became a pioneer settler in an area on the Forth River and published this history of the island in 1884. The book begins with the discovery of the island in 1642 and concludes with the deaths of some significant public figures in the colony in 1884. The establishment of the colony on the island, and the involvement of convicts in its building, is documented. A chapter on the native aborigines gives a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the colonising people, and a detailed account of the removal of the native Tasmanians to Flinders Island, in an effort to separate them from the colonists. The book also contains portraits of some aboriginal people, as well as a glossary of their language.

Book Synopsis Broken Idols of the English Reformation by : Margaret Aston
Download or read book Broken Idols of the English Reformation written by Margaret Aston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were so many religious images and objects broken and damaged in the course of the Reformation? Margaret Aston's magisterial new book charts the conflicting imperatives of destruction and rebuilding throughout the English Reformation from the desecration of images, rails and screens to bells, organs and stained glass windows. She explores the motivations of those who smashed images of the crucifixion in stained glass windows and who pulled down crosses and defaced symbols of the Trinity. She shows that destruction was part of a methodology of religious revolution designed to change people as well as places and to forge in the long term new generations of new believers. Beyond blanked walls and whited windows were beliefs and minds impregnated by new modes of religious learning. Idol-breaking with its emphasis on the treacheries of images fundamentally transformed not only Anglican ways of worship but also of seeing, hearing and remembering.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Charge Delivered to the Clergy of the Diocese of Llandaff, at His Fourth Visitation, September, 1860 The rapid, though scarcely perceptible, flight of time has brought us again to the triennial Visitation, - a gathering of more than usual solemnity, which compels us, as in God's sight, severally to put to ourselves such questions as these, How have I been discharging the duties of my ministry since we were last assembled on a similar occasion? Does my conscience bear me witness that l have been serving God with my spirit in the Gospel of His Son? What causes of thankfulness or humiliation can I discern in the intervening period? What lessons am I to learn from the experience of the past? What grounds have I for looking forward with cheerful con fidence to the future 2' May I safely conclude that, through God's grace, I have been a faithful steward of the trust committed to me, and that, when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, I shall receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away? Selwyn, formerly bishop of New Zealand, to become the first bishop of Auckland, he was consecrated at Westminster Abbey on 29 June 1869. On 20 July he married Eliza Jane Webber at Spring Grove, Middlesex. They arrived at Auckland in February 1870. Their six children were born within the decade. Elected as Anglican primate of New Zealand in 1895, Cowie announced his intention to resign as bishop shortly before his death at Parnell, Auckland, on 26 June 1902. Our last year in New Zealand was written in anticipation of a visit to England in 1888, to provide information 'concerning the Church and the State of New Zealand'. It gives a significant personal insight into the work of a colonial bishop.
