Book excerpt: In the face of hardship, two women learn how to rise up again under the bright side of the stars in A Certain Kind of Starlight, the next book from USA Today bestselling author Heather Webber, "the queen of magical small-town charm" (Amy E. Reichert) Everyone knows that Addie Fullbright can’t keep a secret. Yet, twelve years ago, as her best friend lay dying, she entrusted Addie with the biggest secret of all. One so shattering that Addie felt she had to leave her hometown of Starlight, Alabama, to keep from revealing a devastating truth to someone she cares for deeply. Now she’s living a lonely life, keeping everyone at a distance, not only to protect the secret but also her heart from the pain of losing someone else. But when her beloved aunt, the woman who helped raise her, gets a shocking diagnosis and asks her to come back to Starlight to help run the family bakery, Addie knows it’s finally time to go home again. Tessa Jane Wingrove-Fullbright feels like she’s failing. She’s always been able to see the lighter side of life but lately darkness has descended. Her world is suddenly in shambles after a painful breakup, her favorite aunt’s unexpected health troubles, and because crushing expectations from the Wingrove side of her family are forcing her to keep secrets and make painful choices. When she’s called back to Starlight to help her aunt, she’s barely holding herself together and fears she’ll never find her way back to who she used to be. Under the bright side of the stars, Addie and Tessa Jane come to see that magic can be found in trusting yourself, that falling apart is simply a chance to rise up again, stronger than ever, and that the heart usually knows the best path through the darkness. Using these ideas, simple solutions are offered to a plethora of questions in ontology, philosophy of mind, and aesthetics.

Book excerpt: Two bad boys find redemption when they become unlikely heroes to two very special women and their families. Don't miss these romantic favorites from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Kathleen Eagle! Defender Gideon Defender understood hard choices. Innocent and pure, Raina McKenny had deserved someone better than him, so he'd stepped aside and watched her marry his brother. He'd stayed away when they adopted a baby and created the perfect life he could never offer her. Now, fifteen years later, Raina had returned to the reservation a widow with her fatherless teenage son in tow, and Gideon faced the toughest choices of his life. Between desire and duty, between condemnation and trust, between fatherhood and honor…and even between life and death. Broomstick Cowboy Amy Becker needed a man. Tate Harrison wouldn't have been her first choice…but then, her first choice had gone and died, leaving her pregnant, broke and on the verge of losing everything. Surprisingly, Tate was a good father figure to her children, a tireless worker and far too tempting during those long winter nights. But Tate wasn't one for roots; he was hers only until spring. Unless she could convince him to stay.

Book excerpt: Oxford Studies in Early Modern Philosophy is an annual series, presenting a selection of the best current work in the history of early modern philosophy. It focuses on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries - the extraordinary period of intellectual flourishing that begins, very roughly, with Descartes and his contemporaries and ends with Kant. It also publishes papers on thinkers or movements outside of that framework, provided they are important in illuminating early modern thought. The articles in OSEMP will be of importance to specialists within the discipline, but the editors also intend that they should appeal to a larger audience of philosophers, intellectual historians, and others who are interested in the development of modern thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is not a theory about reality; it is a reality. And yet we must not forget that it is a reality, which includes a theory. ~ ~ ~ In The Religious Experience philosopher James Bissett Pratt attempts to describe religious consciousness as an unprejudiced observer who has no thesis to prove. He demonstrates the universality of religious experience, however varied the verbal descriptions employed by persons who have had it. Topics covered in the book include the Religion of Childhood, the Belief in Immortality, the Cult and its Causes, and the Place and Value of Mysticism. JAMES BISSETT PRATT (1875 -1944) was strongly influenced by his deeply religious mother who awakened him to the phenomenon of religion and one's personal relationship with God. Pratt obtained his doctorate from Harvard University under the aegis of William James, who influenced his philosophical development, and became a mentor and good friend. Shortly afterwards he was hired by William College, where he became a professor of philosophy. Although raised an American Protestant, he did his best to experience Roman Catholicism in Europe, and Hinduism and Buddhism in India, Burma, and Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in modern times can be hectic. The world has become smaller and people more interconnected because of technology. So the pace of life is faster and more intense. There are likewise more of us sharing the planet's resources, making the atmosphere around us more competitive. Most people have their attention fixed on working hard to stay afloat in this fast-paced, stressful environment. Thus, living in today's world poses a challenge as the pressures of daily life make coping with our spiritual duties a daily struggle. There are so many things to do, so many distractions, so many options to every facet of life. For many, it seems that everything on the schedule is far more important than meditation, as though there is all the time in the world to make up for the shortfall in meditation. Our jobs, household duties, family responsibilities, television shows, video games, and hobbies take up so much of our time. We always try to give that time to the Fa. ther which is of no use to us at all. When we are rejected by society, by our children, by our friends, then we want to devote our time to the Father. But we have to give the best time of our life to the Father. Mostly our time is spent in growing up. Then we start getting education and training, and then we give ourselves to family life and the senses and pleasures of the world. And then we become old and everybody rejects us. Our senses don't go along with us. Even our eyes refuse to cooperate, our ears refuse to cooperate, our limbs refuse to cooperate with us. Then we want to worship the Father. We lose the best opportunity, and the time which is of no use to anybody is what we want to devote to the Father. Then we want to be a lover of the Father. The main purpose of this human birth is to go back to the Father, so that should always be kept in view. Keeping that view, other things should fall in line. Maharaj Charan Singh, Spiritual Perspectives, Vol. II Will meditation ever be the primary item on our agenda when even on our rest days there is always one thing or another vying for our time? How do we develop the strength and discipline to make meditation our first priority? We should definitely fulfil our worldly duties but Master must come first, and our commitment to meditate must never be compromised

By contrast, they have paid little or no attention to Theophrastus' writings on plants. That is unfortunate because there was a shared research project in the early Peripatos which amounted to a systematic, and theoretically motivated, study of perishable living beings (animals and plants). This is the first sustained attempt to explore how Aristotle and Theophrastus envisioned this study, with attention focused primarily on its deep structure. That entails giving full consideration to a few transitional passages where Aristotle and Theophrastus offer their own description of what they are trying to do. What emerges is a novel, sophisticated, and largely idiosyncratic approach to the topic of life. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
