Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed an immediate classic of Finnish literature on its publication in 1978 and an international bestseller that has been translated into 19 languages, Märta Tikkanen’s verse novel is a haunting, profoundly evocative portrait of one woman’s fraught relationship with her alcoholic husband, inspired by the author's own experience. In language that is as delicate as it is fierce, Tikkanen explores the depths of fear and violence that often accompany addiction and the struggle to reconcile that pain with the deep love and strength necessary to hold a family together through it all. As much a story of resilience as it is suffering, The Love Story of the Century is a bittersweet account of the complexities of addiction, the power of creativity, and the redemption of love.

Book excerpt: "A fierce and lively book. . . .This is one of those rare books that could make people think about their intimate lives in a new way." — New York Times Book Review “A rousing defense of imprudent ardor and romantic excess. . . . It’s difficult to deny that [Nehring] is on to something.” — Wall Street Journal A thinking person’s “guide” that makes the case for love in an age both cynical about and fearful of strong passion. Bold and challenging, A Vindication of Love has inspired praise and controversy, and brilliantly reinvigorated the romance debate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is love? How, and why, does it last? Through the decades of the twentieth century, advancements were made in almost every field of human endeavor, including medicine, science, and technology. However, despite continual progress, couples seem to know less than ever how to stay together. Times change, as does clothing; slang comes and goes; music mutates and annoys every generation’s parents; yet people still meet, fall in love and begin lives together, no matter what goes on around them. As a decade, a century, and a millennium simultaneously ended, news stories, books, documentaries, and prime-time features were produced on the advancements we have seen as a nation and as a planet. Yet despite new knowledge and vast changes in our culture, through wars that have been fought and every eventual peace that has ever been established, strangers still meet under the most unimaginable circumstances, and suddenly are strangers no longer. Despite answers that have been found to every imaginable mystery, writers, poets, artists, filmmakers, as well as ordinary men and women, still encounter the most basic human mystery in the simple question: What is love? This book is an attempt to find an answer. But it wasn’t my original intent. Is it possible that there might be a secret, some elusive grail, to making a relationship work? Are there common truths that span generations? How do people create a life together that lasts, that defies statistics, and keep from becoming boring, or simply somnambulant? People love telling the story of how they met. And everyone loves hearing these tales of early beginnings. That is where the original idea for this book came from. A collection of “how we met” stories. But as I began asking people to share, I realized that I was recording tales that also reflected the times in which they happened. I soon envisioned a collection that spanned the decades of the century, and that mirrored the cultural changes of the times. Starting with the twenties, included here are tales told with the background of immigrants flooding the streets, of economic depression, of war, of the birth of rock and roll, of the turbulence of the sixties, the confusion of the seventies, the increasing security of the eighties, and the technological nineties. Here are fun, silly, romantic, serious, exciting, and loving tales of people I have grown to know. In these pages you will read of couples who met in the excitement of the roaring twenties (New York, 1927), during the depth of the depression (Kansas, 1939), amidst the chaos and ruins of World War II (France, 1948), in the giddy post-war recovery (San Jose, 1954), the tumultuousness of the sixties (Boulder, 1968), the wildness of the seventies (Ann Arbor, 1974). You will read of couples who met in line waiting for a table at a restaurant (1940), on blind dates (1946, 1955, 1992), at a singles group (1975), a summer teen retreat (1977), on a massage table (1980), during a blizzard on a volcano (1982), on the Great Peace March (1986), on an Indian Reservation (1989), and those who met via the personal ads (1986) and cyberspace (1999). During my interviews, I asked all the couples two questions. First, was it love at first sight? Asking this question opened up the conversation and released an innocence, a playfulness, a deep connection, that was a joy to behold. These people have found a way to keep the early magic from fading, to keep a flame alive. I witnessed this flame time and again. As I listened to stories unfold, I became party to an excitement that was, in some cases, over 70 years old. I then asked couples to share any advice or tips they may have learned to staying together, and here is where the lessons of time became evident. I expected th

Book excerpt: A tough Welshman, he was softened by the affections of a breathtakingly beautiful woman: she was a modern-day Cleopatra madly in love with her own Mark Antony. For quarter of a century, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were the king and queen of Hollywood. Yet their two marriages to each other represented much more than outlandish romance. Together, Elizabeth and Richard were a fascinating embodiment of the mores and transgressions of their time and even luminaries like Jacqueline Kennedy looked to them as a barometer of the culture. The enduring glamour, grandeur, drama and bravado embodied in the couple gave rise to the type of rabid gossip and wide-eyed adoration that are the staples of todayÕ s media. Using brand-new research and interviews Ð including unique access to Taylor herself, the Burton family, and TaylorÕ s extensive personal correspondence Ð this ultimate celebrity biography is the gripping real-life story of a fairy-tale couple whose lives were even grander and more outrageous than the epic films they made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of love and the challenge love offers to the laws and customs of its times and places, as told through poetry from the Song of Songs to John Milton’s Paradise Lost. It is also an account of the critical reception afforded to such literature, and the ways in which criticism has attempted to stifle this challenge. Bryson and Movsesian argue that the poetry they explore celebrates and reinvents the love the troubadour poets of the eleventh and twelfth centuries called fin’amor: love as an end in itself, mutual and freely chosen even in the face of social, religious, or political retribution. Neither eros nor agape, neither exclusively of the body, nor solely of the spirit, this love is a middle path. Alongside this tradition has grown a critical movement that employs a 'hermeneutics of suspicion', in Paul Ricoeur’s phrase, to claim that passionate love poetry is not what it seems, and should be properly understood as worship of God, subordination to Empire, or an entanglement with the structures of language itself – in short, the very things it resists. The book engages with some of the seminal literature of the Western canon, including the Bible, the poetry of Ovid, and works by English authors such as William Shakespeare and John Donne, and with criticism that stretches from the earliest readings of the Song of Songs to contemporary academic literature. Lively and enjoyable in its style, it attempts to restore a sense of pleasure to the reading of poetry, and to puncture critical insistence that literature must be outwitted. It will be of value to professional, graduate, and advanced undergraduate scholars of literature, and to the educated general reader interested in treatments of love in poetry throughout history.

Spinoza's definition of love manifests a major paradigm shift achieved by seventeenth-century Europe, in which the emotions, formerly seen as normative "forces of nature," were embraced by the new science of the mind. This shift has often been seen as a transition from a philosophy laden with implicit values and assumptions to a more scientific and value-free way of understanding human action. But is this rational approach really value-free? Today we tend to believe that values are inescapable, and that the descriptive-mechanical method implies its own set of values. Yet the assertion by Spinoza, Malebranche, Leibniz, and Enlightenment thinkers that love guides us to wisdom-and even that the love of a god who creates and maintains order and harmony in the world forms the core of ethical behavior-still resonates powerfully with us. It is, evidently, an idea Western culture is unwilling to relinquish. This collection of insightful essays offers a range of interesting perspectives on how the triumph of "reason" affected not only the scientific-philosophical understanding of the emotions and especially of love, but our everyday understanding as well.

Book excerpt: Love is a key ingredient in the stereotypical fairy-tale ending in which everyone lives happily ever after. This romantic formula continues to influence contemporary ideas about love and marriage, but it ignores the history of love as an emotion that shapes and is shaped by hierarchies of power including gender, class, education, and social status. This interdisciplinary study questions the idealization of love as the ultimate happy ending by showing how the conteuses, the women writers who dominated the first French fairy-tale vogue in the 1690s, used the fairy-tale genre to critique the power dynamics of courtship and marriage. Their tales do not sit comfortably in the fairy-tale canon as they explore the good, the bad, and the ugly effects of love and marriage on the lives of their heroines. Bronwyn Reddan argues that the conteuses' scripts for love emphasize the importance of gender in determining the "right" way to love in seventeenth-century France. Their version of fairy-tale love is historical and contingent rather than universal and timeless. This conversation about love compels revision of the happily-ever-after narrative and offers incisive commentary on the gendered scripts for the performance of love in courtship and marriage in seventeenth-century France.

Book excerpt: Dating, commitment, kids, and family--it's all hard work, and when you come from different religious backgrounds it's even harder. Jon, a Catholic writer, and Michal, a Reconstructionist rabbi, live out the challenges of an interfaith relationship everyday as husband and wife, and as parents to their daughter Sima, who is being raised Jewish. In MIXED-UP LOVE, the couple explores how interfaith relationships impact dating, weddings, holidays, raising children, and family functions--and how to not just cope, but thrive. This is an engaging and practical resource for singles who are considering dating outside their own faith, couples in interfaith relationships, relatives and friends of "mixed" couples who seek information and understanding, and parents desiring a fresh perspective. With clarity, insight, and humor, Sweeney and Woll demonstrate how to engage with your partner, family, and faith like never before.

Book excerpt: Private life has altered beyond all recognition during the past one hundred years. Britain in 1900 was emerging from a Victorian era in which prudery, patriarchal authority, and pettifogging rules of etiquette were widely perceived to have circumscribed relations between men and women. The twentieth century witnessed a reaction against this system of separate spheres spearheaded by reformers eager that the sexes become each other's equals and intimates. Modern Love traces the trajectory of this new model of personal relationships over the course of the twentieth century, from its emergence out of the crucible of the suffrage campaign through its reshaping by the women's liberation movement. It explores its impact on smut merchants, warring couples, and teenagers, as well as its reception by such diverse figures as Bertrand Russell and Germaine Greer. It draws on sources as varied as suffragette propaganda, banned sex manuals, marriage counseling literature and pin-up magazines. Marcus Collins teaches modern British history at Emory University.
