Book excerpt: This is the second edition of Musalogue to be published by INIBAP. This Musalogue covers most of the diversity in the genus Musa and is intended to be educational in nature. Through this publication, INIBAP aims to inform a wide audience about the vast range of diversity to be found in both cultivated bananas and their wild relatives. The publication is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the wild species, covering the sections Eumusa, Australimusa, Callimusa and Rhodochlamys, while the second part provides information on cultivated varieties (cultivars). A list of the species and main groups and subgroups ofcultivars in the genus Musa is provided on page ix-xi (international classification).

Book Synopsis Banana: Genomics and Transgenic Approaches for Genetic Improvement by : Sukhada Mohandas
Download or read book Banana: Genomics and Transgenic Approaches for Genetic Improvement written by Sukhada Mohandas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bananas and plantains are among the most important food and cash crops in the world. They are cultivated in more than 135 countries, across the tropics and subtropics, with an annual global production of ca. 130 million metric tonnes. Though bananas are one of the most important components of food security in many developing countries, banana production is threatened by both abiotic and biotic stresses. These include a wide range of diseases and pests, such as bunchy top virus, burrowing nematodes, black Sigatoka or black leaf streak, Fusarium wilt, etc. In recent years, considerable progress has been made and several biotechnological and genomic tools have been employed to help understand and unravel the mysterious banana genome. Molecular and genomic studies have helped to decipher the Musa genome and its evolution. Genetic linkage map and whole genome sequencing of both Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana (progenitors of cultivated banana) have completely changed the way of thinking and the approach on banana crop improvement. Whole-genome sequencing has helped to improve the selection of quantitative traits such as yield, as well as the selection of optimal parents for developing required hybrids in breeding programs. Gene isolation and the analysis of mutants have helped in the characterization of genes of agronomic value and the associated regulatory sequences. With the advent of molecular markers and new statistical tools, it is now possible to measure the diversity, identify genes and useful alleles linked to important agronomic traits. Further these alleles can be incorporated into cultivars through marker assisted selection or through transgenic approach. Transgenic approaches are potential tools for direct transfer of these genes into popular cultivars, which are generally not amenable for conventional breeding techniques, in specific with crops such as bananas which are sterile, triploid and heterozygous thereby making it difficult to reconstruct the recurrent genotypes in banana. Transgenic techniques thus have helped overcome the difficulty of working with sterile, triploid banana crop. In the last five years, enormous amount of new information and techniques have been generated for banana. A comprehensive book entitled “Banana: Genomics and Transgenic Approaches for Genetic improvement” on banana genomics, latest transgenic technologies and tools available for improved crop development in banana will address all these requirements.

Book excerpt: With the current world population growth of 1.2%, the earth can expect to house 9-10 billion people by 2050. Food production, too, must increase to accommodate these numbers. Easy growing, high calorie, nutritious foods, such as bananas are the top priority as a solution to this imminent problem. The first comprehensive compendium on bananas in rec
Book Synopsis Achieving Sustainable Cultivation of Bananas by : Gert H. J. Kema
Download or read book Achieving Sustainable Cultivation of Bananas written by Gert H. J. Kema and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bananas are the world's most exported and valuable fruit. However, banana production faces a number of challenges, including a very narrow genetic base for commercial cultivation which leaves the crop highly vulnerable to a range of diseases and other stresses. There is an urgent need to improve existing and develop new varieties which retain key yield and quality characteristics whilst improving resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. The book begins with a discussion of progress in identifying and broadening the genetic base for Musa species. Chapters review ways of classifying banana cultivars, exploiting current collections of germplasm and collecting and evaluating wild Musa species and landraces. Parts 3 and 4 review advances in both conventional and recent molecular breeding techniques and their application in producing improved varieties. Topics include improving fertility and other traits in Cavendish, developing hybrid varieties as well as techniques for genetic improvement.

Download or read book Cryopreservation of Musa Germplasm written by Bart Panis and published by Bioversity International. This book was released on 2001 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 10 years ago, cryopreservation protocols for plant tissues were mainly based on slow freezing in the presence of cryoprotective mixtures containing DMSO (dimthyl slphoxide), sugars, glycerol and/ or proline. Slow freezing results in a freeze-dehydration, leaving less water in the cells to form lethal ice crystals upon exposure to extreme low temperatures.
Book Synopsis Plant Biodiversity and Genetic Resources by : Andreas W. Ebert
Download or read book Plant Biodiversity and Genetic Resources written by Andreas W. Ebert and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers included in this Special Issue address a variety of important aspects of plant biodiversity and genetic resources, including definitions, descriptions, and illustrations of different components and their value for food and nutrition security, breeding, and environmental services. Furthermore, comprehensive information is provided regarding conservation approaches and techniques for plant genetic resources, policy aspects, and results of biological, genetic, morphological, economic, social, and breeding-related research activities. The complexity and vulnerability of (plant) biodiversity and its inherent genetic resources, as an integral part of the contextual ecosystem and the human web of life, are clearly demonstrated in this Special Issue, and for several encountered problems and constraints, possible approaches or solutions are presented to overcome these.

Book excerpt: The Banana Improvement Project has in large measure met the challange above, quoted from the 1994 background paper by Buddenhagen (1996) on the status of global research on banana and plantain. That paper was commissioned by the World Bank to provide background for the five-year BIP program that brought together some of the best research talent worldwide to work on bananas. BIP operated throughout 1994-98, and this publication records the results of the 18 individual research projects, plus the results of an independent economic impact assessement that reported a likely return on investment of 20 to 33 percent.
