Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive catalog of viral diseases of two large groups of arthropods updates the previous surveys of the world's literature published by Hughes in 1957 and by Martignoni and Langston in 1960. This computer-based catalog lists over 600 species of insects and mites, each reported to have one or more of 21 viral diseases or disease groups, for a total of over 900 host-virus records. The catalog consists of two lists. In the first one the hosts are listed in taxonomic sequence (order, family, genus, species). Species appear alphabetically within each genus, genera alphabetically within each family, and families alphabetically within each order. In the second list, the hosts are listed alphabetically by specific names, without consideration of the higher taxa, The host-virus records are stored on computer tape; additions and corrections to the master file can be made easily, and thus the catalog can be revised without much effort.

Book Synopsis Common Infectious Diseases of Insects in Culture by : Vladimir Gouli
Download or read book Common Infectious Diseases of Insects in Culture written by Vladimir Gouli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-12 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook gives a comprehensive and copious illustrated description, with original art work, of the most common diseases in laboratory reared insect colonies, comprising Viruses (Baculoviridae, Reoviridae, Poxviridae, Iridoviridae); Bacteria (Bacillaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae); Rickettsia; Fungi and Microsporidia and Protozoa. Gregarine and Coccidian parasitoids are also depicted. Manuals for the diagnostic of insect diseases have been published in the 90’s, however, these were intended for professional insect pathologists or for proficient training in invertebrate pathology, hence requiring some scientific background in insect pathology. Currently, most guides are web based, not comprehensive and solely addressing the most common diseases in a particular insect, or group of insects, reared in laboratory facilities. A comprehensive and proficient practical handbook for students and technicians working with insect reared colonies is lacking in the current literature.

Download or read book Insect Viruses written by Byrony C Bonning and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2006-09-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baculoviruses are perhaps unique among viruses in the breadth of their biotechnological applications: these insect specific viruses are used not only for insect pest management purposes, but also as laboratory research tools for production of recombinant proteins and for protein display, and as potential vectors for human gene therapy. In addition to highlighting recent advances, this volume provides a comprehensive review of the biotechnological applications of these and other insect viruses in both the academic and private sectors.

Book Synopsis A Textbook of Plant Virus Diseases by : Kenneth M. Smith
Download or read book A Textbook of Plant Virus Diseases written by Kenneth M. Smith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Textbook of Plant Virus Diseases deals with a discussion of different plant viruses, their properties, and the corresponding diseases these viruses cause. It includes a list of host plants of every virus arranged alphabetically. The book discusses the new types of disease vectors, such as root-infesting fungi, nematode worms, mites, and insects that are both biting and sucking. It also discusses the development of new techniques in electron microscopy that is used to characterize in detail the causal viruses of a number of plant virus diseases. Furthermore, it presents the development of plant virus serology, as well as the improved methods of virus isolation that allow the classification of viruses into related groups. The book includes a Bibliography and an Index of Synonyms that can be used in identifying given virus name. In addition, cross-references are included for searching a particular virus under the alternative names. This book will be invaluable to ecologists, environmentalists, agriculturalists, and other scientists interested in plant viruses. Biology students will also find this reference helpful.

Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed an explosion of information on the molecular biology of insect viruses and a frenzy of activity in applying this information to medicine and agriculture. Genetically engineered baculoviruses are presently being tested for commercial use as pesticides, and the study of such viruses is also revealing remarkable insights into basic cellular processes such as apoptosis. This comprehensive volume provides readers with knowledge of basic and applied baculovirology so that current literature in the field can be appreciated.
