Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia: Volume 2, Part 2, From World War II to the Present by : Nicholas Tarling
Download or read book The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia: Volume 2, Part 2, From World War II to the Present written by Nicholas Tarling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these four volumes, published in paperback in 2000, twenty-two scholars of international reputation consider the whole of mainland and island Southeast Asia from Burma to Indonesia. Each volume has a new preface which points to the relationships with the other volumes. The prefaces also comment on some of the research into and thinking about the subject undertaken since the original contributions were completed for the first edition. Volume 2, Part 2 covers the period from World War II to the present and examines the end of European colonial empires, the emergence of political structures of the independent states, economic and social change, religious change in contemporary Southeast Asia, Southeast Asia's role and identity in decolonisation, and the ongoing weakening of links with the West.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia: Volume 2, The Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries by : Nicholas Tarling
Download or read book The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia: Volume 2, The Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Nicholas Tarling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia has long been seen as a unity, although other terms have been used to describe it: Further India, Little China, the Nanyang. The region has had a protracted maritime history. Confucianism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity are all represented. It has seen a quintet of colonial powers - Britain, France, The Netherlands, Spain, the United States. Most recently, it has become one of the fastest growing parts of the world economy. The very term 'Southeast Asia' is clearly more than a geographical expression. The Cambridge History of Southeast Asia is a multi-authored treatment of the whole of mainland and island Southeast Asia from Burma to Indonesia. Unlike other histories of the region, it is not divided on a country-by-country basis and is not structured purely chronologically, but rather takes a thematic and regional approach to Southeast Asia's history. This volume, the second and final in the series, takes us into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from the late eighteenth century of the Christian era when most of the region was incorporated into European empires to the complexity and dramatic change of the post-World War II period. It covers the economic and social life as well as the religious and popular culture of the region as they develop over two centuries. The political structures of the region are also closely examined, from the insurgencies and rebellions of early this century to the modern Nationalist movements which challenged the control of the colonial powers and led to the formation of independent states. Under the editorship of Nicholas Tarling, Professor of History at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, each chapter is well integrated into the whole. Professor Tarling has assembled a highly respected team of international scholars who have presented the latest historical research on the region and succeeded in producing a provocative and exciting account of the region's history.

Book Synopsis Ancient Beliefs and Customs of the Tagalogs by : Jean-Paul G. POTET
Download or read book Ancient Beliefs and Customs of the Tagalogs written by Jean-Paul G. POTET and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a provisional essay, followed by a vocabulary and an index, on the Tagalogs' world view in the Sixteenth Century. It is mainly based on the entries of the earliest dictionaries of the Tagalog language. These were written by Spanish lexicographers about half-a-century after the conquest of the Philippines (Cebu 1565, Manila 1571). Additional data are drawn from Spanish chronicles. Many of the recorded beliefs and customs were already obsolete at the turn of the Seventeenth Century. Some are extremely surprising, starting from the primeval myth according to which the world had no solid land at its beginning, but only two fluids, water and air.
Book Synopsis Baybayin, the Syllabic Alphabet of the Tagalogs by : Jean-Paul G. POTET
Download or read book Baybayin, the Syllabic Alphabet of the Tagalogs written by Jean-Paul G. POTET and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Spaniards conquered the Philippines (Cebu 1565, Manila 1571), they noticed several of its nations had a writing system of their own, called Baybáyin in Tagalog. It was a king of short-hand that did not make it possible to record closing consonants; thus i-lu in Baybáyin could represent í-log "river", i-lóng "nose" or it-lóg "egg", so much so that, while easy to write, it was difficult to read. Because of this shortcoming, it gave way to the Latin alphabet in the course of the 17th century. Nowadays Filipino graphic artists are reviving Baybáyin to express their philippineness.

Book Synopsis Mother Figured by : Deirdre de la Cruz
Download or read book Mother Figured written by Deirdre de la Cruz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mother Figured" is a wide-ranging study of apparitions and miracles of the Virgin Mary in the Philippines from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. While most analyses have read Marian revival as antimodern, de la Cruz demonstrates that its origins actually lie "within "secular modernity. She takes inspiration from one of Mary s titles that has grown in popularity in modern times Mary the Mediatrix to show how modern print and technological media enable and support the circulation of miraculous narratives and images. While thoroughly grounded in local tradition, the resurgence of Marianism in the Philippines is a subject of global relevance. De la Cruz portrays Filipino Catholics not as mere followers of the faith from the margins or from below but as guardians of orthodoxy and aggressive purveyors of their own sort of Christian universalism. In this sense, the book offers a timely analysis of the social and political implications of contemporary Christianity s shift to the Global South."
Book Synopsis Missionary Linguistics II / Lingüística misionera II by : Otto Zwartjes
Download or read book Missionary Linguistics II / Lingüística misionera II written by Otto Zwartjes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume to be dedicated to the pioneering linguistic work produced by the religious missionaries who, within the scope of the European colonial enterprises along the period 1550–1850, described dozens of autochthonous languages, many of which are only known today thanks to their endeavours. The twelve papers joint in the present volume — which dedicated special attention to the orthographical and phonological dimension of their work — provide a comprehensive picture of the descriptive problems faced by these linguists avant la lettre, notably: the difficulties faced before the less familiar features of these languages, such as vowel quantity, accentuation, tonality, nasalization, glottalization, ‘gutturalization’; the building of (re)definitions and the creation of a new metalanguage, like ‘saltillo’, ‘guturaciones’, etc.; The book elucidates the creativity and innovations proposed by individual missionaries and the instructive and pedagogical dimension of their work.
