Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clear air turbulence encounters can occur unexpectedly without any visual evidence or warning. As operations of higher altitude aircraft increase, the phenomenon is encountered more often. Clear air turbulence is defined as 'all turbulence in the free atmosphere of interest in aerospace operations that is not in or adjacent to visible convective activity (this includes turbulence found in cirrus clouds not in or adjacent to visible convective activity).' This bibliography consists of 578 references to technical reports, articles in periodicals, and books published during the past 17 years. References about other forms of turbulence such as that occurring with storms and airplane wake vortices are not included. (Author).

Book excerpt: The results of four case studies of clear air turbulence (CAT) using the diagnostic Richardson number tendency (DRT) formulation are highlighted. The performance of this technique in resolving regions of documented CAT encounters is encouraging. Its operational adaptability appears particularly attractive in that input data can be supplied by the currently operational rawinsonde system. Two CAT indices are calculated deterministically, sensing synoptic scale changes in static stability and vertical wind shear conductive for supporting mesoscale CAT layers. These two indices reveal volumes of the troposphere which act as source regions for patches of CAT. The first, the time to reach the critical Richardson number necessary for the initiation of turbulent conditions, was first used by Oard (1974). A second index is devised which is an adaptation of Roach's (1970) work relating synoptic scale and mesoscale energetical coupling and gives more information on the relative intensity of these source regions. The output from the DRT computer module highlights specific regions of the atmosphere which can be interpreted operationally in terms of a CAT encounter probability. (NTRL site)

Book excerpt: Anyone who has experienced turbulence in flight knows that it is usually not pleasant, and may wonder why this is so difficult to avoid. The book includes papers by various aviation turbulence researchers and provides background into the nature and causes of atmospheric turbulence that affect aircraft motion, and contains surveys of the latest techniques for remote and in situ sensing and forecasting of the turbulence phenomenon. It provides updates on the state-of-the-art research since earlier studies in the 1960s on clear-air turbulence, explains recent new understanding into turbulence generation by thunderstorms, and summarizes future challenges in turbulence prediction and avoidance.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data obtained from a specially-instrumented U-2 aircraft have been used to relate clear-air turbulence with mountain wave structure, observed during two research flights in the stratosphere over the Sierra Nevada Mountains on 13 and 14 May, 1964. The several cases of severe turbulence encountered took place in regions immediately downstream of wave troughs, in area of decreased statis stability and slower wind speeds associated with the prevailing upwind tilt of the waves. An expression for the Richardson number is obtained which incorporates modifications imposed upon flow through stationary disturbances such as mountain waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The role of jet streaks and their associated upper-level structures (fronts, troughs, thermal fields, etc.) in enhancing orographically-induced aviation turbulence near and above the tropopause is investigated. The primary hypothesis for this research suggests that there is an optimal configuration for the positioning of upper-level circulations leading to vertically confluent flow and differential thermal advection, forming an intense inversion. Such a configuration may be associated with vertically-intersecting ageostrophic jet circulations or trough-induced differential vertical motions leading to cold air undercutting a warm layer aloft, and compression of the warm layer in the presence of jet-induced shear. This structure is then perturbed by mountain waves, leading to a downscale cascade of kinetic energy, eventually leading to potential aviation turbulence. Two cases of clear-air turbulence (CAT) are examined using mesoscale numerical simulations."--P. [iv1].

Book excerpt: This paper is motivated by the requirement to improve understanding of vertical motion of pollutants in the stratosphere. One method to estimate vertical transport due to the effects of turbulence is by means of the effective diffusivity coefficient. To calculate this parameter, it is often necessary to know the value of epsilon, the rate of turbulent dissipation. This parameter, epsilon, is also important to know in the context of the global numerical stratospheric simulation models now being created for environmental assessment purposes.
