McArtor, Deputy Director of Technology for the US Dept. of Defense went before the Senate Committee for Approbations & requested $10 million to design a virus that is ''refractory to the immunological systems . In 1970, Dr. McArtor was granted the $10 million by the US Government to invent the AIDS virus. In 2000, feeling drawn to Brazil, the author arrived in the town of Iporanga, Sao Paulo where it is common knowledge among the residents that the US Army has been conducting some kind of secret experiments in a nearby cave hidden in the jungle in 1970. Impossible events occur on a regular basis, & previous to arriving in Iporanga he was shown through a series of coincidences that with the letter 'A' in front of his name, his surname is Apostlethwaite, or Apostobranco. On his second night, Kevin used a strange sentence for the first time & told a young doctor whose days are filled with AIDS victims; "I'm a white blood cell, I go where needed." In answer to her question regarding why he was there. Shortly after seeing a school music book full of Nazi mind control experiments with sound & melody, Apostobranco is shown a cave nearby called Caverna Laboratorio. The local residents were obviously victims of some kind of mind control. There are people in the valley that can't remember when their parents died, & another who can't remember that her husband died of AIDS. All of these things were more than enough to convince the author that he was no longer just a tourist but had assumed the role of a character in a legend. Iporanga! is an expose of numerous crimes against humanity. It's the true account of the discovery of the origin of AIDS & the bizarre series of events that surround it - an account of impossible coincidences & miracles, the misery of AIDS, & the terror of being chased by an army through the jungle in Brazil.

The literature of the various regions of Lusophone Africa has received relatively little critical attention compared with that which has been focused on the work of writers in the English- and French- speaking countries of Africa. With the profound changes which are occurring in the social and political structures of Lusophone Africa, there is particular need for the comprehensive look at Afro-Protuguese literature which this account provides. Professor Hamilton traces the development of this literature in the broad perspective of it social, cultural, and aesthetic context. He discusses the whole of the Afro-Portuguese literary phenomenon, as it occurs on the Cape Verde archipelago, in Guinea-Bissau, on the Guinea Gulf islands of Sao Tome and Principe, in Angola, and in Mozambique. In an introduction he discusses some basic questions about Afro-Protuguese literature, among them, the matter of a definition of this body of writing, the implications of the concept of negritude, the role of Portugal and Brazil in Afro-Portuguese literature, and the social and cultural significance of the dominant literary themes found in the various regions of Lusophone Africa. Because he sees the regionalist movement in Angola as the most significant in terms of a neo-African orientation, he begins the book with an extensive study of the literature of that country. Book excerpt: The Vigorous Core of Our Nationality explores conceptualizations of regional identity and a distinct population group known as nordestinos in northeastern Brazil during a crucial historical period. Beginning with the abolition of slavery and ending with the demise of the Estado Novo under Getœlio Vargas, Stanley E. Blake offers original perspectives on the paradoxical concept of the nordestino and the importance of these debates to the process of state and nation building. Since colonial times, the Northeast has been an agricultural region based primarily on sugar production. The area's population was composed of former slaves and free men of African descent, indigenous Indians, European whites, and mulattos. The image of the nordestino was, for many years, linked with the predominant ethnic group in the region, the Afro-Brazilian. For political reasons, however, the conception of the nordestino later changed to more closely resemble white Europeans. Blake delves deeply into local archives and determines that politicians, intellectuals, and other urban professionals formulated identities based on theories of science, biomedicine, race, and social Darwinism. While these ideas served political, social, and economic agendas, they also inspired debates over social justice and led to reforms for both the region and the people. Additionally, Blake shows how debates over northeastern identity and the concept of the nordestino shaped similar arguments about Brazilian national identity and "true" Brazilian people.

Book excerpt: This book offers the first systematic analysis of the cultural and religious appropriation of Andalusian architecture by Spanish historians during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. To date this process of Christian appropriation has generally been discussed as a phenomenon of architectural hybridisation. However, this was a period in which the construction of a Spanish national identity became a key focus of historical discourse. As a result, cultural hybridity encountered partial opposition from those seeking to establish cultural and religious homogeneity. Spain's Islamic past became a major concern in this period and historical writing served as the site for a complex negotiation of identity. Historians and antiquarians used a range of strategies to re-appropriate the meaning of medieval Islamic heritage as befitted the new identity of Spain as a Catholic monarchy and empire. On the one hand, the monuments' Islamic origin was subjected to historical revisions and re-identified as Roman or Phoenician. On the other hand, religious forgeries were invented that staked claims for buildings and cities having been founded by Christians prior to the arrival of the Muslims in Spain. Islamic stones were used as core evidence in debates that shaped the early development of archaeology, and they also became the centre of a historical controversy about the origin of Spain as a nation as well as its ecclesiastical history.
