Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Business Spelling Book: For Use in High Schools and Business Colleges That there is a widespread interest in spelling among all classes and especially among business men is apparent. The latter are becoming intolerant of the stenographer or the bookkeeper who defaces a page with misspelled words. It is believed that both school men and business men will welcome a book relating directly to business life, as well as reflecting the latest advances in the science of education. The following are the chief distinctive features of this book: 1. The thoroughly practical character of the vocabulary. It has recently been stated (by an investigator of the Russell Sage Foundation) that "useful spelling lists cannot be compiled by sitting at the desk and deciding which words people ought to know how to spell." The words in this book have been selected by quite a different method, namely, by collaboration with business men and by careful study from other practical sources of the words necessary to be learned by students in secondary schools. Letters were written to men representing all forms of business, requesting a list of ten common words often misspelled in their correspondence and also a list of ten words pertaining to their special business frequently misspelled. Book Synopsis The American Way of Spelling by : Richard L. Venezky
Download or read book The American Way of Spelling written by Richard L. Venezky and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1999-07-23 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can ghoti really be pronounced fish? Why is "o" short in glove and love, but long in rove and cove? Why do English words carry such extra baggage as the silent "b" in doubt, the silent "k" in knee, and the silent "n" in autumn? And why do names like Phabulous Phoods and Hi-Ener-G stand out? Addressing these and many other questions about letters and the sounds they make, this engaging volume provides a comprehensive analysis of American English spelling and pronunciation. Venezky illuminates the fully functional system underlying what can at times be a bewildering array of exceptions, focusing on the basic units that serve to signal word form or pronunciation, where these units can occur within words, and how they relate to sound. Also examined are how our current spelling system has developed, efforts to reform it, and ways that spelling rules or patterns are violated in commercial usage. From one of the world's foremost orthographic authorities, the book affords new insight into the teaching of reading and the acquisition and processing of spelling sound relationships.
