Book excerpt: This first book in an irresistible new series introduces librarian and reluctant sleuth Raymond Ambler, a doggedly curious fellow who uncovers murderous secrets hidden behind the majestic marble façade of New York City’s landmark 42nd Street Library. Murder at the 42nd Street Library follows Ambler and his partners in crime-solving as they track down a killer, shining a light on the dark deeds and secret relationships that are hidden deep inside the famous flagship building at the corner of 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. In their search for the reasons behind the murder, Ambler and his crew uncover sinister, and profoundly disturbing, relationships among the scholars studying in the iconic library. Included among the players are a celebrated mystery writer who has donated his papers to the library’s crime fiction collection; that writer’s long-missing daughter, a prominent New York society woman with a hidden past, and more than one of Ambler’s colleagues at the library. Shocking revelations lead inexorably to the traumatic events that follow—the reading room will never be the same.

One more heist, and then I'll be done with this life for good. In and out. I'd done it a million times. This will be no different. At least, that's what I thought… Then Erica showed up. She was too delicious to pass up. A pretty city girl in a world far removed from the one she knows. In other words, easy prey. Down here, we do things different. When a man like me wants a woman like her, he doesn't stop to ask questions. He just takes. And takes. And takes. Until his hunger is sated. And that's exactly what I did. The stupid girl was about to get stabbed, but I had a different kind of penetration in mind. I scooped her up, threw her across my bike, and took her home. The rest was bare flesh and broken moans. I wish it had ended there. But you can't always get what you want. And this little angel is trying her damndest to drag me back into the underworld I'm desperately trying to escape. Cut it out, princess. You don't give the orders around here – I do. Now get on your knees. I'm not going to ask twice.

Book excerpt: The last novel in Martin Boyd's celebrated Langton Quartet, which includes The Cardboard Crown, A Difficult Young Man and Outbreak of Love. At the outbreak of World War I, Dominic Langton leaves his wife on a remote sheep farm in New South Wales to enlist in the British Army. What he experiences in the trenches changes him forever; his return home sees him cast off his past and find his own integrity. He has seen the true nature of war - the senseless waste of life, the millions of young men condemned to pointless slaughter - and has emerged a wiser, but troubled, man. When Blackbirds Sing is a masterful recreation of the vanished world of 1914, and a moving and powerful testament to the devastation of war. In this final instalment of Martin Boyd's celebrated Langton Quartet, Boyd confirms his reputation as one of the most outstanding novelists Australia has ever produced. Martin a' Beckett Boyd was born in Switzerland in 1893. After leaving school, he enrolled in a seminary, but he abandoned this vocation and began to train as an architect. He served in the Royal East Kent Regiment and the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and settled in England after the war. His first novel, Love Gods, was published in 1925. Three years later The Montforts appeared, then Lucinda Brayford in 1946. In the coming decade he was to write the Langton Quartet: The Cardboard Crown, A Difficult Young Man, Outbreak of Love, When Blackbirds Sing. In 1957 he went to Rome, where he lived and continued to write until his death in 1972.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story of passion, suspense and violence. Ettore DiStephano, an immigrant Italian stonemason, learns that his daughter, Maria, has been found raped and murdered. He calls home his children: Vincent, a judge; Michael, a surgeon; Anthony, a priest; Rose, wife of a business tycoon; Paul, an army colonel; and wild, deadly, Dominic, an engineer with wanderlust. Disdaining American justice, Ettore insists that the family find the killer. Jim, the tycoon son-in-law, joins the search. Then his wealthy niece, Bonny, a spinster anthropologist, falls madly in love with Dominic, and demands to help. Soon, one suspect stands out. Tracking him down takes the family to foreign countries, where guns explode and men die. Then, as the action thickens, they find that beneath the veneer of their professional exteriors is the pelt of their father, a contadino, and that his mission is correct. When the confrontation gets out of hand, both sides mass their strength for the inevitable showdown. About the Author Lester Taube was born of Russian and Lithuanian immigrants in Trenton, New Jersey. He began soldiering in his teens in a National Guard horse artillery regiment, where in four years he rose in grade from private to the exalted rank of private first class. In World War II, he became an infantry officer. His first operation was on the Bismarck Archipelago, where his most dangerous opponents were malaria and sand fleas. His regiment was next attached to the 3rd Marine Division for the Iwo Jima operation, then he and 18 other soft headed volunteers fought on Okinawa, the last battle of the war. Recuperating from wounds and malaria, he left the army to run a 400 employee electronic company in California, a 450 employee paper stock company in Pennsylvania, then moved to Canada to open a logging and pulpwood cutting operation. Recalled to service during the Korean police action, he served as an advisor to the Turkish army, then as an intelligence officer and company commander in Korea. During the Vietnam period, he went on duty in France and Germany as a general staff officer working in intelligence and war plans, and even had a stint as Chief of Operations of the U.S. Army in Europe. While in France, he opened a chain of coin operated laundries, which became the largest in Europe. Prior to retirement as a full colonel, he moved to a small village in Austria, and kept a boat for five years on the Cote d'Azur. During this period in Europe, he wrote four fiction novels, which were published in hardcover by W.H. Allen of London, paperback copies were published by a subsidiary, and rights were sold to a number of foreign countries. All four novels were optioned for motion pictures and two were sold. He stopped writing because of his time consuming jobs and the raising of a family. He has four children, all born in different countries. After 13 years in Europe, he returned home, where he worked as an economic development specialist for the State of New Jersey until his final retirement.

Saddled with leadership of their dysfunctional group, he finds himself dealing with problems he doesn’t know how to handle: Remy is grief-stricken and suicidal, Gray is distant and reclusive, and Cade is near death. And things only get worse. When the past he’s fought to keep secret from his friends catches up with him, the consequences are devastating. While he and Gray are on the hunt for supplies, a still-recovering Cade is kidnapped by a militant group of survivors. And on his return, he’s told of a conspiracy involving test subjects, pathogens, and CDC doctors—a conspiracy that dances too close to the truth for comfort. Brandt’s race to save Cade takes him back to the dangerous streets of Atlanta, where not all is as it seems. And with a horde of infected closing in and the rescue mission in jeopardy, he comes tantalizingly close to a cure that might save what’s left of humanity from the ravages of the Michaluk Virus.

They reach the shore of England, where both are considered enemies. There they find both unexpected allies and an unexpected love. Even so, betrayal stalks them as lies long told draw them into a web of treachery and bring Dominic a heritage he never imagined would be his, for he is the heir of a duke killed during the Terror. Not that he will be able to claim his legacy unless he can escape their enemies and save Abigail for a horrible fate. I was in the middle of my novice training a little over a year ago, when someone blew up my parents' car. They were the kindest people in the world, and their deaths shook the foundation of my faith. Now I'm lost, knocking around in a half-furnished new house with no family left but a sister who hates me. No one has ever found the people responsible for my parents' murder, and the police don't seem interested in trying to find them, either. The only bright spot in my life is the man who lives next door with his baby daughter. I look at him and remember that I'm a woman, not just a failed novice. He gives me one smile, and I feel some of the glacier of grief inside of me melt away. I can only imagine what a kiss from him would do.
