Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a respected qualification gaining increasing currency around the world, and which has been adopted by a wide variety of schools, both public and private. In the UK, growing dissatisfaction with the A-level system has led to an intense debate about alternative qualifications, and in many schools IB courses have been introduced alongside conventional A-level courses. This practical introduction to the IB takes a balanced look at the pros and cons and features a wealth of advice from those actually involved in teaching and implementing it in schools. Providing comparative material on how IB courses differ from A-levels and a subject-by-subject account of best practice in teaching the IB, this book offers a rich source of practical advice for teachers, school leaders or managers involved in teaching or implementing the IB programmes.

Book excerpt: In August 1963, one of the best-selling aircraft of British civil aviation, the BAC One-Eleven, took to the skies for the first time. With an order book for sixty aircraft, more than half were from the United States, which was an unprecedented situation for a British civil aircraft. The first project for the newly formed British Aircraft Corporation, the One-Eleven was wholly designed and built by BAC, and remained in production throughout the entire seventeen-year history of the organisation, performing strongly even when profits were at a low. After flying commercially in Europe for the last time in March 2002, here the One-Eleven is celebrated in style fifty years after its maiden flight. In this revised edition, Stephen Skinner combines original research with fascinating black-and-white and colour images, as well as detailed appendices, to consider what transpired in those five decades and the place the One-Eleven holds in British aviation history.

This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report suggests that any new performance or curriculum measures affecting schools should only be implemented after proper consultation with key stakeholders and the wider public - something which didn't happen with the English Baccalaureate (EBac). The Committee says that the Government should also have waited until after the conclusion of the National Curriculum Review before introducing the EBac. They want the Government to deliver on its promise in the White Paper - The Importance of Teaching - to use performance tables to put greater emphasis on the progress of every child. The report notes that "certain academic subjects studied at A-level are more valued by Russell Group universities than others", but argues that a "focus on a fairly narrow range of subjects, demanding considerable curriculum time, is likely to have negative consequences on the uptake of other subjects." The Committee does not make recommendations on which subjects should or should not be included but rather encourages the Government to reconsider the EBac's composition when the National Curriculum Review is concluded. The Government should confirm how it will monitor the attainment of children on free school meals in the EBac. The report also calls for further international evidence to inform debate on the merits of the EBac: evidence the inquiry received did not suggest a link, in other countries, between the prescribed study of certain academic subjects and improved attainment and prospects for poorer students. Elsewhere, the report argues that the current arrangements for certification of the EBac should be shelved, as should calls for a Technical Baccalaureate to sit alongside the existing award.

Book excerpt: This edition of over 60 000 entries, including significantly more than 20% new or revised material, not only updates its predecessor but also continues the policy of extending coverage to areas dealt with only sparsely in previous editions. Special attention has been paid to the Far East, Australasia and Latin America in general, and to the People's Republic of China in particular. The cross-referencing between a defunct organization and its successor (indicated by ex and now) introduced into the last edition, has been extended. Otherwise the policies adopted in previous editions have been retained. All kinds of organizations are included - international, national, governmental, individual, large or small - but strictly local organizations have been omitted. The subject scope includes activities of all kinds, in the fields of commerce and industry, education, law, politics, public administration, religion, recreation, medicine, science and technology. The country of origin of a national organization is given in brackets, unless it is the home country of the title language or can be deduced readily from the title itself. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are also added in brackets. Equivalences are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. A select bibliography guides the reader to specialist works providing more detailed information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fresh, incisive scholarship, by some of the leading business historians, critically examines the nature of economic recovery in Britain in recent years. Covering the key issues for business history in this period, the book confronts the traditional literature on conclusions of relative decline, and monocausal, simplistic explanations. It provides an impressive range of studies forming a platform for a new debate on the nature of British business in the 20th century. Themes include productivity, management, research and development, marketing, regional clusters and networks, industrial policy, the use of technology, and gender. Sector studies include newer, post-war hopefuls and successes including: * aerospace, * IT, * retail, * banking, * overseas investment, * the creative industries. The book demonstrates that our understanding of the historic strengths and weaknesses of business in Britain, and the shifting balance between sectors of the economy, has until now been poorly understood, and that British business history needs a fundamental reappraisal.

Book excerpt: This volume examines the multiple connections between education, broadly defined, and work, through an analysis of the literature on the transition from school to work, on vocational training and on the labour market. It shows that concepts such as skill, unemployment rates, young people and the transition from school to work are socially constructed and are thought about in ways which are nationally specific. This book is essential reading for students of European training systems and for those conducting comparative European research.

Book excerpt: The previous edition of this directory extended its coverage of the Far East, Australasia and Latin America, areas previously under-represented. For this new edition emphasis has been given to increasing the number of entries for organizations from Britain, the United States and Australia, and particular attention has been paid to new political organizations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The number of entries included has gone up to over 68,000 of which over 9,000 are new or amended. Cross-references from defunct organizations in the previous edition have been deleted, and references (indicated by ex and now) added for organizations which have changed their name since the previous edition. As before, the range of organizations included is broad and only purely local organizations have been excluded. This directory therefore lists official and unofficial organizations, national and international, on all SUbjects: political, economic and social. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are given where appropriate and equivalencies are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. Further information about the organizations listed can be found in the sources listed in the bibliography.
