Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philoso phy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the h0pe that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the bistori cal side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or recon structive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Modern Philosophy The subject matter of the history of philosophy consists of the efforts which individual thinkers have made to explain or perchance to solve the ultimate problems Of knowledge and of being. Modern philosophy - i. E. The philosophy of the last three centuries - has been specially concerned with four great problems. These problems, moreover - as I have Shown in my Philosophic Problems (eng. Tr. 190 5)-are intimately related to each other, and there likewise exists a most significant analogy between them, in that the antithesis of continuity and discontinuity is of fundamental importance in each of them, except that it manifests itself under different forms. The main texts covered are: Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy Spinoza's Ethics Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding Leibniz's Discourse on Metaphysics and Monadology Berkeley's A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous Hume's An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion Kant's Critique of Pure Reason Classical Modern Philosophy is the ideal textbook to accompany a course in the history of modern philosophy, but each chapter can also be studied alone as an introduction to the featured philosopher or work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philosophy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the hope that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the historical side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or reconstructive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico-genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development. This definite point of view has made it necessary to keep certain matters clearly in mind. As few technical terms as possible have been used and those which were considered necessary have been defined either in the introductory chapter or later on in the book. Again, the writer has striven to avoid two difficulties which might be urged against an "Introduction," - stress on an array of unrelated facts and too broad a point of view. The minute details of the various philosophical systems have been omitted as far as possible, and for this reason many features have been neglected which in a more subjective and critical account might be considered of importance. Bessarion was a more temperate admirer of Plato, though he too combated (discreetly) the doctrines of Aristotle, as maintained by George of Trebizond. He considered Plato more in accord than Aristotle with Chris tian dogma. He rejected the Platonic doctrines of the pre-existence of the soul, the plurality of gods, and the world-soul. The chief work of Bessarion is entitled In Calumniatorem Platonis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This aim has been, in as untechnical a way as possible, and with as little presupposition of previous philosophical training, to show how the problems of philosophy, which are apt to seem to the student on his first introduction to them rather arbitrary and unintelligible, and with no very apparent relation to the concrete interests of life, in reality are not manufactured problems, but arise of necessity out of any attempt honestly to understand the world, and to appreciate the value which belongs to human experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1: A Sketch of the History of Philosophy From the Close of the Renaissance to Our Own Day The appearance of a new representation of an important period in the History of Philosophy will naturally give rise to the ques tion as to what view of philosophy is regarded by the author as fundamental, and what is the significance, and what the value which he ascribes to its history. To which I answer that the whole aim of the studies of which the publication of this book denotes the provisional conclusion has been to shed light on the question as to what philosophy really is. As we learn to know a man from his biography, so also we must be able to learn to know a science from its history. And it is the more natural that we should adopt this path, since experience is continually showing us that, within the sphere of philosophy, contending views are advanced, each one of which claims to be valid, so that there is. No one exposition of philosophy to which we can point as developing an exhaustive conception of it. It is natural, therefore, that we should here, as within the sphere of religion, employ the comparative method. The history of philosophy treats of the attempts which have been made by individual thinkers to discuss the ultimate problems of know ledge and of life. It will be a result of no small importance, therefore, if we can show clearly what are the problems with which philosophy deals, how these problems have presented themselves at different times, and what, in each case, were the conditions which determined the different statements of the problems, and the attempts at their solution. If such a result can be approximately attained, the study of the history of philosophy will be of no small importance for the future development of philosophy itself. Its employment is limited, its bounds narrow, its existence precarious, inferior, subordinate. Well! Here again philosophy is philosophy; and scarcely has it fortified itself by time, scarcely is the hand which was over it removed, or become less weighty, when philosophy resumes its natural course, and produces again the four different systems which it has already produced both in India and in Greece. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern European Philosophy: The History of Modern Philosophy, Psychologically Treated With this Century, then, we begin our his toric account of Modern European Philosophy, and embrace in it three supreme men, Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz. Looked at through the intervening Centur these three are seen to be the loftiest peaks thought, though between them and around them lie lesser heights which are likewise mountainous. The latter, however, we shall have to pass by in the present survey, and concentrate our attention upon those who express the three distinctive phases of the phi losophy of the Seventeenth Century, and Show its process not only in their systems of thought but also in their lives and characters.
