Designed by U.S. Capitol and White House architect Benjamin Latrobe, the "Pen" opened its doors in 1800. Vice President Aaron Burr was incarcerated there in 1807 as he awaited trial for treason. The prison endured severe overcrowding, three fires, an earthquake and numerous riots. More than 240 prisoners were executed there by electric chair. At one time, the ACLU called it the "most shameful prison in America." The institution was plagued by racial injustice, eugenics experiments and the presence of children imprisoned among adults. Join author Dale Brumfield as he charts the 190-year history of the iconic prison.

Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the genesis of the United States' penal system through the lens of one of America's first prisons, the Virginia Penitentiary. The penitentiary in Richmond was built by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1797 and opened for operation in 1800. Because the institution was founded and operated in a slave society, bondage directly impacted the function of the prison system in ways not yet explored by historians. Legislators never intended the institution to be used for the confinement of slaves, but as the judicial system expanded, citizens demanded the apprehension of convict slaves due to growing fears of revolt. For the first several decades of operation, the penitentiary was a pillar for the growing state government and the imbedded slave system. When the penitentiary first opened, the immense Virginia countryside spread westward toward modern day Ohio. There were no railroads, only sparsely useable routes on horseback, and just a small number of people lived sporadically across the largely undeveloped land. The transport of prisoners required infrastructure and the penitentiary system was one state entity that encouraged growth and organization. By apprehending free citizens as well as slaves, residents began to depend on the penitentiary to dispense justice to offenders. The penitentiary became a staple in the state government, and when slaves were convicted of a crime, the state worked with slave owners to compensate them for their loss of property. The state then took ownership of convict slaves and sold them in states further south in the cotton empire. Most literature on American prisons focuses on moral reform institutions found in Northern facilities, but historians have yet to analyze the importance of the Southern penitentiary model, founded in Virginia. While both regions implemented forced labor for convicts, attitudes toward labor differed in each region and transformed the goals of each system. While moral reform efforts prevailed in Northern penitentiaries, the Virginia system remained punitive. Despite the monetary difficulties of running the penitentiary, the state prison system worked in conjunction with the deeply rooted channels of slave society in order to expand and gain power. Eventually, the penitentiary acted as a pillar for the propagation of slavery in Virginia.

Did you know that some of the area's earliest settlers were Huguenots fleeing religious persecution in France? Major John Clarke designed many of Richmond's first public buildings, but did you know that he was one of the masterminds behind the area's early industry as well? Tredegar Iron Works was the arsenal of the Confederacy, but Richmond-area foundries at Westham and Bellona supplied weapons to the armies of the Revolution as well. Richmond's first penitentiary was designed by Benjamin Latrobe before his term as architect of the Capitol. Local author Maurice Robinson narrates the tales of early Richmond's seven hills and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the long and interesting history of Virginia's search for effective correctional measures. Paul Keve shows that Virginia's correctional history mirrors the economic, cultural, and political conditions that have characterized the state as a whole. Not long after the Revolution, Virginia leaders looked to the North and to Europe for innovative approaches. Authorized in 1796, the penitentiary built in Richmond was the embodiment of an immense hope for the humane correction of criminals. From that time until the Civil War, penitentiary managers eagerly tried to implement the device of imprisonment combined with work, rather than corporal punishment. After the war, Virginia joined other southern states in exploiting convict labor. But as Virginia came into the twentieth century, the system gradually was expanded beyond the penitentiary. Throughout its history, Keve traces the system's attitude toward its inmates. From the final abandonment of whipping to the development of realistic alternative programs, the state struggled to attain a mature and modern approach to corrections. -- From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The long tradition of architecture in Virginia begins with the earliest structures at the Jamestown settlement in 1607, and continues today with some of the most advanced buildings yet completed anywhere. In its legendary landmarks -- Mount Vernon, Monticello, the Virginia Capitol building in Richmond, the James River plantation mansions, the Reynolds Metals headquarters building in Richmond, Washington National Airport, and Dulles International Airport -- as well as in homes, churches, stores, and office buildings across the state, Virginia's architecture is a mirror of the many expressions of America's built environments. This book invites the readers on a journey through the eye and mind of the architect, from the very drawings that give shape and form to the idea, through the tracks and traces found in long lost letters, office records, and other primary sources. You will never see the buildings around you, anywhere, in the same way again. -- From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The massive Eastern State Penitentiary in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia, now a National Historic Landmark, is remarkable for its innovative architecture and its pioneering system of isolation in individual cells. Heir to the energetic Quaker reformist tradition in Philadelphia in the 1820s, the penitentiary was a model of idealism in penal reform and a model of prison architecture for the world. About three hundred prisons worldwide trace their paternity to Eastern State Penitentiary. This book shows how the novel experiment in prison reform contended with the realities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and explores the legacy of this crucible of good intentions.

Book excerpt: Literally hundreds of Virginia buildings of architectural or historical interest have vanished. Most were demolished or burned, while others were abandoned as populations and needs shifted. The consequence is that important models of architectural accomplishment and key symbols of human aspiration and achievement have disappeared and are largely forgotten. Lost Virginia is an effort to document and reconstruct the appearance of Virginia architecture in earlier times, when the nation's destiny and history were intimately tied to the Old Dominion's landscape and buildings. It seeks to recover, at least on paper, an impression of our lost architectural heritage. Organized into categories of domestic, civic, religious, and commercial buildings, the more than three hundred vanished structures illustrated within include slave pens in Alexandria, George Washington's singular sixteen-sided barn, a one-room schoolhouse in Greene County, and the 18th-century Valley homes--long mistaken for forts--of German-speaking settlers. Soldiers in both blue and gray tramped by the now-lost Rockingham County courthouse, and a cathedral-like federal post office in Roanoke joins Rockbridge County's fantastic Alleghany Hotel on the list of exceptional but short-lived buildings. Also documented are creations like Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin Company Pavilion, destroyed just months after it had been erected for the Jamestown Tercentennial Exhibition, and the Thomas Jefferson-designed Barboursville in Orange County. --jacket.
