Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry: A Book Designed for Use in Courses The book has been thoroughly revised and in part rewritten. Five additional chapters have been inserted, in order to increase the usefulness of the volume and to keep thoroughly abreast with recent developments in Physiological Chemistry. The new Chapters are, Chapter VI on Nucleic Acids and Nucleoproteins, Chapter VIII on Gastric Analysis, Chapter XI on Intestinal Digestion, Chapter XVI on Blood Analysis and Chapter XXVII on Metabolism. The Chapter on Metabolism consists in large part of directions for typical metabolism tests which may be conducted by the student in order to demonstrate important principles of metabolism. The Chapter on Blood Analysis includes the most recent methods which have played such an important part in adding to our knowledge regarding the composition of the blood under normal and pathological conditions. The Chapter on Gastric Analysis includes a general discussion of titratable acidity and hydrogen-ion concentration as well as an exposition of the Fractional Method of Gastric Analysis which was elaborated in the authors laboratory by Dr. Martin E. Rehfuss, and which has been very widely adopted. The Chapter on Nucleic Acids and Nucleoproteins is a brief discussion of basic facts accompanied by experiments suitable for student use. In order to facilitate the selection of tests and methods for courses in which but little time is devoted to the subject, the actual laboratory procedure involved in such tests and methods as the author considers most important has been printed in black face type to differentiate such tests and methods from those which he considers of less importance, which are set in small type. In certain instances, however, tests and methods which the author believes to be of first importance, but which are not so readily adapted to student use, have been printed in small type. The latest and best methods of quantitative analysis have been introduced throughout the volume. The nephelometer has been discussed and certain nephelometric methods described. Certain tests and methods which had obviously outlived their usefulness have been omitted from this edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry: A Book Designed for Use in Courses in Practical Physiological Chemistry in Schools of Medicine and of Science The plan followed in the presentation of the subject of this volume is rather different, so far as the author is aware, from that set forth in any similar volume. This plan, however, he feels to be a logical one and has followed it with satisfactory results during a period of three years in his own classes at the University of Penn sylvania. The main point in which the plan of the author differs from those previously proposed is in the treatment of the food stuffs and their digestion. In Chapter IV the Decomposition Products of Proteids has been treated although it is impracticable to include the study of this topic in the ordinary course in practical physiological chemistry. For the specimens of the decomposition products, the crystalline forms of which are reproduced by original drawings or by micro photographs, the author is indebted to Dr. Thomas B. Osborne, of New Haven, Conn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry This book was originally compiled as a handbook for prae tical work in Physiological Chemistry at University College, London, since no single text or class book covered the complete course, or treated Physiological Chemistry as part of the subject of Organic Chemistry, or even as an in dependent subject. The present book must still be regarded mainly as a compilation. It represents an attempt to give to the worker a nearly complete statement of the whole subject. Each section has a short explanatory summary of the essential points, so as to connect the various sections together. The essential points are illustrated by the practical experiments, which are printed in different type. The illustrations are also compiled from various sources. These are mentioned underneath each figure. The illustra tions of apparatus not so mentioned have been drawn from my own sketches. For those of the osazone crystals, haemin, and tyrosine, I am indebted to Miss V. G. Sheffield, who has also kindly helped in reading the proof sheets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry IN view of the results attained from the course given in physiological chemistry in this University, as well as the experience of others, the author is firmly convinced of the superiority of the laboratory method of instruction over the didactic, believing that it is only by practical work that the student can become familiar with the physio logical changes in progress in the animal body and their products. This book has been prepared with the aim of imparting accurate knowledge through the student's own observation. It has seemed advisable to include with the directions for experimental work a brief explanation of the facts observed, so as to call attention to their meaning; or, at times, to state others which are important, but which could not well be demonstrated in such a course as this. Some acquaintance with general chemistry and with chemical manipulation is presupposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry in Thirty Lectures Physiology and physiological chemistry were at one time a single field of investigation. The latter, owing to the remarkable progress of the exact sciences chemistry and physics, has now developed to such an impor tant branch of natural science that it is altogether impossible today for any one scientist to master thoroughly in all its details the whole field of physiology. Little by little, there has developed a sharp distinction between pure physiology and physiological chemistry. It is clear that an artificial separation of two such closely related fields of investiga tion must work to disadvantage for the development of each, so that it is fortunate to find it recognized more and more that the whole science of physiology can only develop satisfactorily when there is an intimate exchange of ideas between investigators in the two fields. The chemical decompositions in the tissues do not take place beside the physiological processes, but are bound up with them. In no single case can we carry out any distinction-in such a sense; and with those organs in which the relations between the functions and the metabolism are not known, this is chiefly because of our limited knowledge concerning the latter. In this connection we need only recall the whole nervous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for a Practical Course in Chemical Physiology In writing this book for the use of medical students the author has departed from the method usually followed. The subject matter is practically limited to experiments and deductions from the experiments, and is not meant to supply the full and ordered information obtainable from a text-book of physiological chemistry. The arrangement of the work differs from that generally followed, in that the student is at the outset provided with substances familiar to him, such as a potato, an egg, lard, butter, etc. From these he prepares, by simple chemical manipulations, the proximate constituents and their decomposition products, and studies their chemical reactions and physical properties. In this way he is introduced to the subject without interposing complex chemical conceptions, which the usual arrangement of dividing the subject into the study of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins necessarily involves. In teaching practical physiological chemistry to students, who have had only an elementary training in organic chemistry, it seems on the whole more satisfactory and more scientific to impose no tax on the faith of the pupil, even if the work covered is less comprehensive than it might otherwise be. The knowledge acquired in such a course as outlined in this book is at least real, and questions beyond the scope of personal demonstrations by the student may well be left to treatment in lectures. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiological Chemistry, for Students of Medicine In the following pages I have attempted to present a brief account of the important principles of physiological chemistry in a form suitable for the use of medical students who may be assumed to have completed courses in the elements of general inorganic and organic chemistry. From the very necessities of the case a work of this character, dealing with many topics in an elementary way, must be largely a compilation; in the selection of material, besides consulting the standard hand books, I have made free use of the recent monographs by Cohnheim. Effront and Oppenheimer, as well as of numerous articles in the Zeitschrift fur physiologische Chemie, the Beitrage zur chemischen Physiologie und Pathologie and other journals. As the book is intended for beginners I have not thought it necessary to make any special quotations of literature references. In addition to the usual topics of discussion in elementary works on physiological chemistry I have given an outline of the chemical phases of the recent theories of immunity, and a short explanation of the important applications of the methods of cryoscopy and electrical conductivity, and other physical processes, in the field of chemistry related to medicine. Work in these latter lines must soon become a part of the laboratory training of medical students. A considerable number of illustrative experiments are given in the text, but distinguished by being printed in smaller type. These experiments are sufficiently numerous and comprehensive to serve the purpose of a laboratory course parallel with the general course. In the work of proofreading I have received very material assistance from my colleague, Dr. W. H. Buhlig, to whom my sincere thanks are due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Chemistry, Vol. 2 Notwithstanding my earnest desire to include the whole of my materials in the present volume, I have been compelled to devote it exclusively to the Animal Juices, and to postpone the chemistry of the animal tissues and organs, and the consideration of the zoo-chemical processes, to a third volume. In discussing the chemical characters and the composition of the animal tissues, I shall include the recent investigations regarding the parenchymatous fluids of the animal, body. Liebig's examination of the juice of flesh has afforded 'an admirable model, which has already stimulated other chemists to pursue similar courses of inquiry. The third and concluding volume, which will appear in the course of the present year, will embrace Histo-Chemistry and Zoo-Chemical Processes generally, with especial reference to Digestion, Respiration, and Nutrition.
