These behaviors often cluster together, creating a condition of aggregated risk, which disproportionately affects adolescent girls. Alcohol use, risky sex, and sexual victimization are among these risks, often with presence of one augmenting the risk for another. Adolescents who are admitted for acute psychiatric hospitalization are at even greater risk for problem alcohol use and risky sexual behavior. The context of hospitalization also provides an ideal setting for intervening on risk behavior. The current project aimed to develop and pilot an intervention program targeting alcohol use and risky sexual behavior for adolescent girls admitted for acute psychiatric hospitalization. The project consisted of two studies that built on one another and were consistent with Stage I research of the Stage Model of Behavior Therapies (Rounsaville, Carroll, & Onken, 2001). The aim of Study 1 was to develop the intervention program based on established guidelines, data about the target population and intervention environment, theoretical models of behavior change, and the intervention literature. The aim of Study 2 was to pilot the developed intervention program to determine program feasibility, preliminary efficacy, and fidelity of program delivery. Results from this project first supported the feasibility of developing and implementing a brief intervention with inpatient adolescent girls. Second, preliminary outcome data suggest that the developed intervention program can be delivered with fidelity and can generate improvement in risk knowledge, motivation, and behavioral skills for alcohol use, sexual behavior, and sexual victimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol misuse presents a major risk for health and well-being throughout the life-span, but youth have a special vulnerability. Alcohol is the most widely used drug by adolescents. For some, this may be one or two isolated occasions of youthful experimentation; for others, the use becomes excessive, placing them in danger of immediate adverse consequences such as accidental injury and alcohol poisoning, or encouraging other high-risk behavior patterns including unprotected sex. Moreover, a pattern of heavy drinking established in adolescence and young adulthood may continue into an adult pattern of alcohol abuse. Concerned communities and institutions across the nation are tackling the problem of alcohol use and abuse by young people. Research-based knowledge is urgently needed to inform these efforts and to ensure that limited prevention resources are used as effectively as possible. The origins of youthful alcohol use and abuse are found within the complex interplay of individual characteristics, family and peer influences, the larger societal context for alcohol use, environmental conditions, and maturational processes that accompany adolescence. This volume, which began as a special issue of the Journal of Research on Adolescence, contains all of the material from the journal issue plus additional chapters. It helps researchers to meet the tremendous challenge of disentangling the key determinants of risk, and developing effective interventions. Primary sources of influence on youthful alcohol use are described, ranging from individual expectancies about alcohol effects and cognitive decision processes to parenting practices, peer influences, social environments, and economic factors; and a corresponding range of prevention interventions is discussed. This book will serve as a primer to those with an interest in developing and improving effective programs and activities to reduce alcohol-related problems among young people. For those engaged in prevention research, the text will provide useful reviews and current findings that should aid in directing future research activities.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: In retrospect, substance use and sexual activity are quite common amongst adolescents and young adults. As such, it is emerging that sexual health amongst adolescents and young adults is seemingly becoming a significance public health challenge. Owing to the high rates of risky sexual behavior and alcohol use amongst adolescents and young adults, extensive scientific inquiry has focused on investigating the consequences of these issues. Of concern has been the correlation between the co-occurrence of alcohol use and risky sexual behavior with the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. It is also worth noting that alcohol use has a negative influence on protection against STDs because it impairs the use of protective barriers. Given that adolescents and young adults exhibit a high tendency of sexual risk taking, alcohol use exacerbates the issue of risky sexual behaviors in these groups. Morrison et al. claim that teenagers in the US “do not consistently protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or unintended pregnancy”. This explains the magnitude of the problem. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive critical analysis on the correlation between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviors amongst the young adults and adolescents. It will also discuss the consequences associated with alcohol use and risky sexual behavior amongst these groups.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent girls with substance use disorders (SUDs) are not receiving the help they need. Studies have found high rates of co-occurring mental health disorders, trauma histories, and increased risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections among girls with SUDs. However, few receive substance abuse treatment and many do not receive sexuality education. Integrating sexuality education into substance abuse treatment is a logical, promising, yet uncommon, approach to improve overall outcomes for youth with SUDs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an integrated approach to sexual health intervention and substance abuse treatment and related outcomes on girls' substance-using and sexual risk-taking behaviors. Further, this study explored whether participants’ trauma histories and/or sexual attitudes impacted response to the intervention. Sixty-seven girls participated in this single sample, longitudinal study. Paired sample t-tests were conducted to measure change over time in high-risk drinking, illicit drug use, sexual health-related knowledge, and unprotected sex. Regression analyses were conducted to investigate whether reported symptoms indicative of trauma history, as well as sexual attitudes, impacted participants' response to the intervention. The majority of girls maintained low or decreased their drinking risk and their unprotected sex risk over time, and increased sexual health-related knowledge. Participants with higher baseline anxiety symptoms were more likely to avoid high-risk drinking post-treatment. Participants' sexual esteem at intake was related to their illicit drug use after treatment. While there are practical barriers to integrating sexual health interventions and substance abuse treatment, the results suggest there are effective strategies for successful integration of much-needed services.

Book excerpt: This purpose of this paper is to examine the causal impact of substance use on risky sexual behaviors by teenagers. Risky sexual behaviors, which include unprotected sex and multiple partners, are highly correlated with alcohol and illicit drug use, although the nature of the causal relationship is in question. This study uses two-stage least squares and reduced form models to examine the relationship between substance use and sexual behaviors by gender. Data come from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveys. Result show that alcohol use does not increase the likelihood of having sex or of having multiple partners, although alcohol use does lower the probability of using birth control and condoms among sexually active teens.

Book excerpt: Adolescence is a time of major transition, however, health care services in the United States today are not designed to help young people develop healthy routines, behaviors, and relationships that they can carry into their adult lives. While most adolescents at this stage of life are thriving, many of them have difficulty gaining access to necessary services; other engage in risky behaviors that can jeopardize their health during these formative years and also contribute to poor health outcomes in adulthood. Missed opportunities for disease prevention and health promotion are two major problematic features of our nation's health services system for adolescents. Recognizing that health care providers play an important role in fostering healthy behaviors among adolescents, Adolescent Health Services examines the health status of adolescents and reviews the separate and uncoordinated programs and services delivered in multiple public and private health care settings. The book provides guidance to administrators in public and private health care agencies, health care workers, guidance counselors, parents, school administrators, and policy makers on investing in, strengthening, and improving an integrated health system for adolescents.
