Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Account of the Families White and Clarke The statement is handed down through Uncle James White, son of Col. William White, that our first known ancestor emigrated from London to Londonderry, Ireland, just before the siege of that town in 1689. We have no record of his given name or that of his wife. He took with him an infant son named William. He was probably born in the reign of Charles II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clarke Family By reading grandfather's introduction we can see under what difficulties he worked, and it is wonderful that one weakened by age and long illness 'could write so well. There were a number of repetitions, misplaced words and phrases, as well as a few incomplete sentences; but these mistakes have been rectified in order to make the meaning clearer. I have not in any case changed the thought, and have tried to make only the corrections that grandfather would make were he and not I editing this work. Through the information given in the manuscript and other data sent me I was enabled to trace the direct descent back to Duncan Clarke, and the Tree there fore contains the record of eight generations, as nearly complete as it could be mad-e. Of the one hundred and forty - nine descendants of Duncan Clarke, eighty - nine are now living, eight of the fifth generation, thirty-three of the sixth, forty-seven of the seventh and one of the eighth. Book Synopsis The Red and the White: A Family Saga of the American West by : Andrew R. Graybill

This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award. One of the American West’s bloodiest—and least-known—massacres is searingly re-created in this generation-spanning history of native-white intermarriage. At dawn on January 23, 1870, four hundred men of the Second U.S. Cavalry attacked and butchered a Piegan camp near the Marias River in Montana in one of the worst slaughters of Indians by American military forces in U.S. history. Coming to avenge the murder of their father—a former fur-trader named Malcolm Clarke who had been killed four months earlier by their Piegan mother’s cousin—Clarke ’s own two sons joined the cavalry in a slaughter of many of their own relatives. In this groundbreaking work of American history, Andrew R. Graybill places the Marias Massacre within a larger, three-generation saga of the Clarke family, particularly illuminating the complex history of native-white intermarriage in the American Northwest.

Book excerpt: A pioneering, dazzling satire about a biracial black girl from Philadelphia searching for her Jewish father in New York City Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb. Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the White Family In the summer of 1887, while on a visit to Mrs. Mary Potter, at Eaton, N. Y., she told me, in answer to my questioning, the names of her line of ancestors dating back to William White. My questions, and the answers to them, only covered two pages of note paper. Had I then thought of making any further use of my questioning, than to merely gratify my own curiosity, I might have learned much that it has since taken time and labor to accomplish. Download or read book Childhood's End written by Arthur C. Clarke and published by RosettaBooks. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Retro Hugo Award–nominated novel that inspired the Syfy miniseries, alien invaders bring peace to Earth—at a grave price: “A first-rate tour de force” (The New York Times). In the near future, enormous silver spaceships appear without warning over mankind’s largest cities. They belong to the Overlords, an alien race far superior to humanity in technological development. Their purpose is to dominate Earth. Their demands, however, are surprisingly benevolent: end war, poverty, and cruelty. Their presence, rather than signaling the end of humanity, ushers in a golden age . . . or so it seems. Without conflict, human culture and progress stagnate. As the years pass, it becomes clear that the Overlords have a hidden agenda for the evolution of the human race that may not be as benevolent as it seems. “Frighteningly logical, believable, and grimly prophetic . . . Clarke is a master.” —Los Angeles Times
