Book Synopsis A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies by : Bartolomé de Las Casas
Download or read book A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies written by Bartolomé de Las Casas and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1992-11-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bartolomé de Las Casas was the first and fiercest critic of Spanish colonialism in the New World. An early traveller to the Americas who sailed on one of Columbus's voyages, Las Casas was so horrified by the wholesale massacre he witnessed that he dedicated his life to protecting the Indian community. He wrote A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies in 1542, a shocking catalogue of mass slaughter, torture and slavery, which showed that the evangelizing vision of Columbus had descended under later conquistadors into genocide. Dedicated to Philip II to alert the Castilian Crown to these atrocities and demand that the Indians be entitled to the basic rights of humankind, this passionate work of documentary vividness outraged Europe and contributed to the idea of the Spanish 'Black Legend' that would last for centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bartolome de las Casas, O.P. (1484-1566), was a 16th-century Spanish Dominican priest, writer and the first resident Bishop of Chiapas. With his father, las Casas emigrated to the island of Hispaniola, in 1502 on the expedition of Nicolas de Ovando, during which he witnessed the brutalities committed against the Tainos. He joined the Dominican monastery in Santo Domingo in 1523. There he continued his theological studies. He helped to oversee the building of a church in Puerto de Plata. He also began working on his History of the Indies in order to report many of the first hand experiences that he had witnessed in the conquest and colonization of New Spain. Las Casas played a significant historical role as an eyewitness to one of the most important eras in history. He made an abstract and copy of the diary Christopher Columbus kept of his voyages. He incorporated much of Columbus' writings, diary and log in his own history. Today, both the Columbus diary as well as the copy have disappeared but las Casas' abstract survived. He is an important source for the early period of Spanish Colonialism.

This book was released on 2003-09-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after the arrival of Columbus, at the height of Spain's conquest of the West Indies, Spanish bishop and colonist Bartolomé de Las Casas dedicated his Brevísima Relación de la Destruición de las Indias to Philip II of Spain. An impassioned plea on behalf of the native peoples of the West Indies, the Brevísima Relación catalogues in horrific detail atrocities it attributes to the king’s colonists in the New World. The result is a withering indictment of the conquerors that has cast a 500-year shadow over the subsequent history of that world and the European colonization of it.

Gold's natural properties are every bit as surprising as the powers attributed to the mineral, which is why gold could engender the brutal but extraordinarily productive encounter of the peoples who built the Americas of today. The Indians, Africans, Europeans, and MÉtis all contributed - through the alchemy of time and passion - to forging the face of the nations and the landscapes of the vast territory of the Americas. From pre-Hispanic treasures to technological marvels of the twenty-first century, the ways in which gold has been used are as limitless as the human imagination. Let yourself succumb to gold fever and discover the Americas as you have never before seen them.

Book excerpt: Uninhabited by humans, the Mascarene Islands of the Indian Ocean were once home to an extraordinary range of birds and reptiles: giant tortoises, parrots, skinks, geckos, burrowing boas, flightless rails and herons, and, most famously, dodos. But the discovery of the three isolated islands in the 1500s, and their colonization in the 1600s, led to dramatic ecological changes. The dodo became extinct on its home island of Mauritius within several decades, and over the next 150 years most native vertebrates suffered the same fate. This fascinating book provides the first full ecological history of the Mascarene Islands as well as the specific story of each extinct vertebrate, accompanied by Julian Hume’s superb color illustrations.
