Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unleashing of the French Revolution in 1789 resulted in the acceleration of time coupled with an inability to predict what might happen next. As unprecedented events outpaced the days, those caught up in the whirlwind had little time to make judicious decisions about which course of action to follow. The lack of reliable information and delays in communication between Paris and the provinces only exacerbated the situation. Consequently, some fled into exile in Europe and the United States, while others remained to take advantage of new opportunities provided by the revolutionary government. Between 1789 and 1794, the government moved from a position of hopeful cooperation to one of desperate measures instigated during the Terror of 1793–1794. As a result, those French citizens who had fled early in the revolution, including many aristocrats and the king's brothers, as well as the artist Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun, could not return until many years later, while those who had remained, such as Vigée-LeBrun’s husband, the art dealer Jean-Baptiste Pierre LeBrun, as well as the artist Jacques-Louis David, the writers Sébastien Chamfort and André Chénier, and expelled Girondin deputies, chose survival strategies that they hoped would be successful. For all those concerned, timing was key to survival, and those who lived found that they had crossed a bridge between the Ancien Régime and the beginning of the modern world. It would not be possible to grasp the full import of the period between 1789 and 1795 until time had decelerated to a more reasonable level after the fall of Robespierre in 1794. Yet few could have then imagined that almost one hundred years would pass before a stable French republic would be established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the neon-drenched year 2180, Amara, a brilliant linguist, stumbles upon a dusty artifact – an ancient manuscript. As she deciphers its cryptic code, she discovers it's not just a text, but a bridge across time. Through the power of the manuscript, Amara finds herself connected to Elias, a passionate poet from the 1700s. Their initial exchanges crackle with wonder. Amara describes a world of gleaming chrome and dazzling technology, while Elias paints vivid pictures of a bygone era, filled with horse-drawn carriages and candlelit soirées. Their letters, filled with wit and curiosity, blossom into a unique and profound bond. Despite the centuries separating them, Amara and Elias find solace in each other's words. Amara shares the loneliness of a world dominated by technology, while Elias expresses his longing for a world brimming with the beauty and rawness of nature, a concept almost forgotten in Amara's time. As their connection deepens, a forbidden romance ignites. They navigate the vast cultural and temporal gaps, sharing dreams and aspirations across the centuries. The manuscript becomes their lifeline, a portal where their souls meet and their love flourishes. But their connection is fraught with challenges. The technology that allows them to communicate is unstable, and the threat of the link severing looms large. Can their love transcend the boundaries of time, or will their connection fade into a mere whisper of what could have been?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three of Marianne Williamson's previous bestsellers -- A Return to Love, A Woman's Worth, and Illuminata -- explored the issue of relationships. Now, in this deeply personal collection of essays, prayers, and self-reflection, she turns to romantic love. In Illuminata, Williamson wrote that "we experience God to the extent to which we love, forgive, and focus on the good in others and ourselves." Now, in Enchanted Love, she writes that "enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious." High romance, she says, "is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is an audacious ride to the center of what is, at the heart of every person. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into what two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now is the time to remember who you are. The shift in consciousness that you may be experiencing -- during this time of unprecedented change -- is a doorway into a joyful and exciting new way of being on planet Earth. To encourage enjoyable and insightful personal breakthroughs within the momentum of change, Journey Through an Open Door provides a mirror reflecting a step-by-step progression into a wider view. That wider view -- that expansion -- is inside us all and it is accessed through a heart-directed journey. This heart-directed journey of expansion includes essential balancing of the intuitive with the rational, the feminine with the masculine, the inner landscape with the outer one. Rooted in the beauty of natures year along the Maine coastline, Tritia Hamilton's narrative for Journey Through an Open Door is the background for doorway-opening commentary from beneficent guides who playfully call themselves Mirin. It is they who suggested and inspired the writing of this unique and multi-layered book. Among the twenty Mirin commentaries shared within the narrative of Journey Through an Open Door are: Remembering, Playfulness, All Mirrors are Magic Mirrors, Power Places, Guidance, Relationships, Where is the Future?, The Land of Enchantment, The Dawning. The annotated journal pages that follow each of the Mirin commentaries invite participation and strongly encourage your personal heart-directed journey. Fifty-six keys to expansion further enhance your process of opening into the wider view. "We underscore that the adventure of expansion into enhanced awareness is not a whimsical side trip but rather an integral part of your journey. This journey can ultimately align both your heart's longings and rememberings with earthplane reality'. Access to long-denied parts of yourself, and transformation of all aspects of your reality both inner and outer is possible. And it beckons." ~ Mirin

Book excerpt: Time surrounds us. It defines our experience of the world; it echoes through our every waking hour. Time is the very foundation of conscious experience. Yet as familiar as it is, time is also deeply mysterious. We cannot see, hear, smell, taste, or touch it. Yet we do feel it—or at least we think we feel it. No wonder poets, writers, philosophers, and scientists have grappled with time for centuries. In his latest book, award-winning science writer Dan Falk chronicles the story of how humans have come to understand time over the millennia, and by drawing from the latest research in physics, psychology, and other fields, Falk shows how that understanding continues to evolve. In Search of Time begins with our earliest ancestors' perception of time and the discoveries that led—with much effort—to the Gregorian calendar, atomic clocks, and "leap seconds." Falk examines the workings of memory, the brain's remarkable "bridge across time," and asks whether humans are unique in their ability to recall the past and imagine the future. He explores the possibility of time travel, and the paradoxes it seems to entail. Falk looks at the quest to comprehend the beginning of time and how time—and the universe—may end. Finally, he examines the puzzle of time's "flow," and the remarkable possibility that the passage of time may be an illusion. Entertaining, illuminating, and ultimately thought provoking, In Search of Time reveals what some of our most insightful thinkers have had to say about time, from Aristotle to Kant, from Newton to Einstein, and continuing with the brightest minds of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circadian rhythms have been shown to be ubiquitous and critically important in the experimental laboratory, accounting for the difference between life and death in response to identical stimulus. The partly endogenous nature of circadian rhythms has been well documented and methods for their characterisation have been developed enabling the cellular and molecular mechanisms to be understood. Chronobiology and Chronomedicine aims to provide a review of these mechanisms underlying circadian rhythms and illustrate the role of the brain’s suprachiasmatic nuclei in the ‘pace-making’ process and the effects caused by ‘clock genes’ present in almost all cells. Beyond the mechanisms involved, the book discusses the relationship between body systems, disease, and proper circadian function; in particular, how disruption of the circadian rhythm is associated with ill health and disease status from observations made at the organismic level. The book is organised to be an ideal introduction for the postgraduate in various fields, reviewing developments and outlining methods to show the depth and breadth of chronobiology and chronomedicine, as well as an invaluable companion to researchers and healthcare professionals working in the field with an interest in developing novel therapeutic approaches.
