Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter to the Editor of "the Bookman" On Certain Paragraphs Which Appeared in That Journal Relative to a Correspondence in "the Scotsman" On "Robert Burns and Mrs. Dunlop Replying to Mr. Ewing's attack, Mr. Wallace makes a very good defence. He never assumed omniscience on the subject of T lze bums-dzm/op Correspondence, but, like every other editor of Letters, he asked the co-opera tion of everyone who knew where such documents were to be found, and he always courteously acknowledged any assistance which he received. It was, therefore, taking an unfair advantage of him for Mr. Ewing to remain silent on the matter so that he might querulously complain about the volume after it was published. At least, this is how the matter will strike anyone who candidly examines the lengthy newspaper correspondence that has arisen on this momentous subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Punch's Letters to His Son, and Punch's Complete Letter-Writer These letters were originally addressed to, I verily believe, my own son. In them, I have endeavoured to enshrine the wisdom of my life. In them, I have sought to paint men as they are - to sketch the scenes of the world as they have presented themselves 'to my observation - to show the spring of human motives - to exhibit to the Opening mind of youth the vulgar wires that, because unseen, make a mystery of common-place. I am prepared to be much abused for these epistles. They are written in lemon-juice. Nay, the little sacs in the jaws of the rattle-snake, wherein the reptile elaborates its poison to strike with sudden death the beautiful and harmless guinea - pigs and coneys of the earth, - these venomous bags have supplied the quill that traced the mortal sentences. Or if it be not really so, it is no matter; the worthy, amiable souls, who would have even a Sawney Bean painted upon a rose - leaf, will say as much; so let mejor once be beforehand, and say it for them. One of the girls, a Miss Rawlings, seems very friendly. We have been walking up and down on deck together. She has introduced me to the doctor, and to another man she knows. We have had lunch, a great spread, with funny little brown waiters to look after you. We are going down the river, now, so it is quite smooth, and I hope it will be when we get outside. Arthur introduced me to the purser, who seems to be an even more important person than the captain. Everything seems to be very comfortable, and I think I shall get on very well. I don't feel at all lonely, so far. Please give my love to every one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From New York, Vol. 1: Second Series I do not call this volume Letters from New York, on account of the unexpected popularity of the first volume, or because I consider it altogether appropriate; but I can think of no better name, under which to arrange articles so miscellaneous and incongruous in their character. Many of them are now published for the first time, others have been scattered through various periodicals. I claim for them no other merit than that of being an honest record of my own views and impressions, on subjects which most interest me. If you discover faults in my premises, or errors in my conclusions, it may at least do you some good, by exciting your own mind to increased activity. That I see glorious truths in mere fragments, and utter even those with most inadequate expression, I am painfully conscious. But frankly and confidingly, as children do, I show you an image of my soul, as reflected in the mirror of its passing thoughts. I have written nothing from affectation, sectarian prejudice, or partisan zeal. Perhaps you will forgive my deficiencies, for the sake of my kind intentions, and sincere love of truth. Though they treat of many subjects, they possess, I hope, that unity, which comes from a settled purpose and a consistent point of view. They rarely touch upon the fierce controversies of the moment. The Toryism, whose principles they would set forth, is the Toryism, not of politics, but of life and letters. And the memory of its sadness is not pleasant to recall, even now. Dear little Perrin's tear ful face and convulsive weeping nearly broke my heart when he said: Ma! Ma! Don't go! Please, don't go! As the city gradually faded away in the dim dis tance, and we could no longer distinguish the reced ing forms of the little group standing at the end of the long pier, waving their last fond adieus, freighted with blessings for us, our sad reveries were broken by the sharp stroke of the bell, calling us below to lunch. Neither J or myself felt much inclined to answer the summons, but Common Sense, sturdy old fellow! Suggested the propriet-y of putting aside our mental disquietude and looking a little after our physical necessities, if we expected to derive any real benefit from the sea-voyage on which we were just entering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dickens-Kolle Letters, Vol. 1 It will be remembered that Kolle, in addition to looking after his own interests in wooing a fair member of the Beadnell household, served young Dickens in the capacity of messenger in smuggling his imploring love missives through the parental barriers and into the hands of the coquettish Maria, after Dickens had been debarred from the Beadnell home, and even from communicating with Miss Beadnell through the mail. Nothing could better illustrate the corroborative character of these letters than the quotation appearing on pages 13-15. Matters of an intimately personal nature which disclose important facts and give a clearer insight into the lives and characters of those who are near and dear to us are always interesting. Perhaps no author excels Dickens in the ever-increasing number of admirers he has made among the lovers of literature; and facts, therefore, which relate to and explain the all-absorbing event of his life, and which, according to his own confession to Mrs. Winter, were the inceptive cause of his famous career, cannot fail to be of interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From New-York You ask what is now my opinion of this great Babylon; and playfully remind me of former philippics, and a long string of vituperative alliterations, such as magnificence and mud, finery and filth, diamonds and dirt, bullion and brass-tape, &c. &c. Nor do you forget my first impression of the city, when we arrived at early dawn, amid fog and drizzling rain, the expiring lamps adding their smoke to the impure air, and close beside us a boat called the "Fairy Queen," laden with dead hogs. Well, Babylon remains the same as then. The din of crowded life, and the eager chase for gain, still run through its streets, like the perpetual murmur of a hive. Wealth dozes on French couches, thrice piled, and canopied with damask, while Poverty camps on the dirty pavement, or sleeps off its wretchedness in the watch-house. There, amid the splendour of Broadway, sits the blind negro beggar, with horny hand and tattered garments, while opposite to him stands the stately mansion of the slave trader, still plying his bloody trade, and laughing to scorn the cobweb laws, through which the strong can break so easily. In Wall-street, and elsewhere, Mammon, as usual, coolly calculates his chance of extracting a penny from war, pestilence, and famine; and Commerce, with her loaded drays, and jaded skeletons of horses, is busy as ever "fulfilling the World's contract with the Devil."
