Book excerpt: This qualitative phenomenological study explores the experience of Black males in senior leadership at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI’s) as they navigate stereotype threat. Extending from the literature on Stereotype Threat pioneered by Steele (1995), this study examines the lived reality of eight (8) Black males in senior leadership. Representing a broad spectrum of institution size and scope, each participant either was a President of a university or reported directly to the president. In-depth interviews were conducted with each participant using a semi-structured research protocol. Each participant was able to describe in detail their lived experience as it related to the major research question and the three sub-questions. The research question was: What is the experience of Black male, senior leaders in predominately white institutions (PWI) while maintaining legitimacy and navigating stereotype threat? How do Black males in senior leadership interact with the knowledge of perceived stereotypes while leading the institution? What identity is most salient to Black males in senior leadership (being Black or being a leader)? How does that saliency impact the leader's experience with legitimacy (Individual, Institutional, Environmental, Technical, & Moral)? What coping mechanism do Black males in senior leadership employ to navigate stereotype threat? Through thematic analysis of the thick-rich data collected during this study, seven thematic responses developed. The data provided a comprehensive understanding of the experience of Black males. The responses that developed were: (1) Black, but not only Black; (2) Role vs. Identity; (3) It is what it is; Onliness; (4) Navigating Whiteness; (5) Code-Switching; (6) Authenticity and (7) Vulnerability. The themes advanced by this study add to the body of knowledge on this topic and serve to bridge a gap in the given theory of legitimacy (Bornstein, 2003). Implications for practice in Leadership, Learning, and Service are discussed as well as implications for current and future research. However greater research on Black males in leadership and leading educational institutions is warranted in order to increase the understanding and support of Black males in leadership positions.

The data collected led to the themes of Pride, Protection and Understanding. The study also was prominent in determining the role resilience and Family of Origin played in Black male and Black male leader identity. The self-study also has the potential to play a prominent role in promoting values and ethics that are required and expected for leaders in educational administration. Educators can use this self-study to improve upon their own practices and raise consciousness about the impact of microaggressions in the school setting. The self-study has the potential to teach other educators and educational school leaders to accept responsibility for the treatment of Students of Color within the public school setting.

Specifically, in social science research Black men have often been portrayed as unmotivated, underachieving and violent (Harper, 2012). This study used a strengths-based approach to explore the lives of successful Black men. The purpose of this study was to investigate successful, post-collegiate Black men's conceptualization of success through an exploration of transformative moments in their lives. Additionally, the purpose of this study is to understand how participants articulate communalism, or being of service, which is a core, strengths-based value for many in the Black community (Moemeka, 1998). Participants of this study were eleven Black male alumni members of a leadership academy that highly values service and achievement. Narrative inquiry and critical race theory informed the qualitatively constructed dialogues and thematic analysis presented. This study described a variety of people (including mentors, parents/caregivers, peers and public figures) and opportunities (such as attending rigorous schools and extracurricular engagement) that shaped participants' success. Additionally, participants discussed the importance of communalism in their lives described as being motivated by ancestral history and a sense of responsibility to Black male youth. Implications for Black male mental health and the field of counseling psychology are explored.

Book excerpt: There have been relatively few studies examining the leadership of Black men, and even fewer studies examining the leadership of Black men from the phenomenology of Black men, themselves. The purpose of this Q Methodology study was to examine Black male perspectives of the role race plays with Black male leader/leadership development in the world of work. The study was designed as an exploratory attempt to surface and understand how 40 emerging African American male leaders in a large, urban city in the SE United States viewed their own leadership development. Elements of socio-analytic theory and leader-member exchange theories were the basis for the conceptual framework. The 40 participants sorted 41 statements reflecting distinct perspectives on the role race plays with Black male leader/leadership development within the world of work. Participants sorted these 41 statements within a forced distribution response grid based on what best reflected their perspectives. These 40 sorts were then correlated and the correlations were factor analyzed and rotated, leading to the extraction of five factors, each representing five distinct, shared perspectives. Following examination and analysis of these five factors, or shared perspectives, the researcher named them: 1) Faithful, Familial, and Resilient, 2) Creative, Faithful, and Independent, 3) Attentive, Connected, and Woke, and 4) Knowledgeable, Congruent, and Unapologetically Black, and 5) Responsible, Faithful, and Supportive. The results of this study suggest there is rich diversity among Black male perspectives regarding their leadership development, and demonstrates important functions outside the workplace. These diverse perspectives and those elements characterizing them should be considered as educators prepare to work with Black males and those preparing to support their development, leadership and otherwise. Finally, the researcher suggests that future research into the experiences and perceptions of Black men continue to seek methodologies that honor and magnify their voices.

Book excerpt: Sexual violence is an issue every college in America must work to prevent. Critical race scholars such as Derrick Bell may argue sexual violence can be viewed through a lens of race because racism is ordinary and not aberrational (Crewe, 2021). Historical context can affect the perceptions racialized groups or populations have when discussing sexual violence, like Black students for example. Historically, Black men have been socially connected to hypersexuality and criminality (Baker,1998). This may affect how Black men view peers accused of sexual violence. Black women, however, have a history of being met with skepticism or disbelief when they disclose experiencing sexual violence (Brubaker & Mancini, 2017). Studies show the majority of rapes are intra-racial (Koch, 1995; Wheeler & George, 2001). Thus, how sexual violence impacts Black communities is important to explore. This study examines the following questions: (1) How do Black men perceive rape allegations made by Black women against Black men? (2) What impacts those perceptions? To answer both questions, I conducted a study where participants were presented with a hypothetical scenario. The scenario contained a hypothetical intra-racial occurrence of sexual violence in which a Black woman alleged a Black man assaulted her. Using inductive coding, I analyzed the interview findings using intersectionality and cultural betrayal trauma theory (CBTT). In analyzing the findings of 14 interviews conducted, I looked for perceptions Black male participants had of sexual assault allegations made against Black men made by Black women. Fourteen participants, who were enrolled in college at the undergraduate level at a predominantly white institution (PWI) in California, were involved in this study. Data was collected via virtual semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Findings revealed Black men had a myriad of perceptions about intra-racial sexual violence on Black communities. They were supportive of the survivor in the hypothetical scenario and identified key elements of the survivor's dismissal as well as barriers to her disclosure of the assault. Participants also believed their Black male peers would have mixed reactions to the scenario, with some supporting and affirming the survivor, and others dismissing and invalidating the survivor's experience. Participants noted the differences in such responses to scenarios included upbringing, media influences, reputation, lack of institutional trust, and other factors. Practical suggestions included an institutional change within the university setting to acknowledge elements of consent, coercion, victim-blaming, and other elements of rape culture outside of explicit conversations about sexual violence. This included revising particular Title IX orientations, creating courses to highlight these elements within their curricula, hosting culturally relevant workshops for mandated reporters, as well as Title IX officers and university police departments specifically, as well as implementing taskforces to strategically implement these suggestions. Suggestions also included incorporating newsletters to outline how sexual violence impacts different minoritized groups and incorporating more minoritized group resources into national sexual violence college prevention reports. Some also suggested incorporating restorative justice models within colleges & universities for students to establish systems of pressure to hold institutions accountable for making requisite changes to address sexual violence concerns on campus. Suggestions for future research include exploring the relationships between Black men and institutional agents (i.e., Title IX officers and police officers), Black men's perceptions of intra-racial sexual violence allegations at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Black men's perceptions of intra-racial sexual violence allegations at higher education institutions across the United States beyond just the West Coast, Black women's perceptions of intra-racial sexual violence, as well as perceptions of intra-racial sexual violence experienced in other racial/cultural groups.

Book excerpt: Introduction: The intersection of community violence exposure, coping strategies, and health behaviors has not been investigated among young adult Black males and Hispanic males in Lake County, Indiana. Approximately 22 miles from Chicago, Lake County includes noteworthy mid-sized cities such as Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago. In 2021, firearms were involved in 44 of 48 homicides in Gary, 15 of 16 homicides in Hammond, and 12 of 13 homicides in East Chicago. Black males and Hispanic males are at a higher risk of engaging in harmful and unhealthy behaviors as a coping mechanism in response to exposure to community violence. This study explores thirteen Black males' and Hispanic males' ages 18-25 and fifteen practitioners' (community mentors and mental health professionals) perceptions of coping strategies and healthy and health risk behaviors after directly witnessing and/or indirectly experiencing a violent act or event. Methods: Using community-based participatory research (CBPR) orientation, this study employed collaborative partnership with Holistic Evolution (HE), a community-based organization in Northwest Indiana, home to Lake County. Aspects of Social Cognitive Theory were incorporated to design this community-based participatory research. Twenty-eight participants completed 40-80-minute, audio-recorded, phenomenological semi-structured interviews. Audio recordings were transcribed, and NVIVO was used by the research team (primary researchers and two coders) to complete transcript analysis.Results: Findings provided an understanding of how Black males and Hispanic males cope after being exposed to violence either directly or indirectly. Insights from Black males and Hispanic males emerged regarding (1) directly or indirectly experiencing violence; (2) changes in everyday life experiences; (3) coping strategies that involved socio-emotional health, spiritual health, social health, and risky health behaviors; (4) rationales for not asking for help; (5) observations of significant others' coping; (6) what to do differently in the future; (7) beliefs about Mentors; and (8) beliefs about Mental Health Providers. Findings provided insight into Mentors' and Mental Health Providers' beliefs about how Black males and Hispanic males cope after being exposed to community violence. Three main themes emerged: (1) Community Mentors' perception of helping Black males and Hispanic males cope; (2) Mental Health Providers' perceptions of helping Black males and Hispanic Males cope (3) How Relationship Makes the Difference in Connecting before being able to help Black males and Hispanic males cope effectively. Subthemes included being a good mentor and the impact of the gender or race of a mental health provider.Conclusion: Delving into' participants' experiences revealed that Black males and Hispanic males in Lake County, Indiana, choose to adopt a range of health risk and positive health strategies after directly witnessing and/or indirectly experiencing violence. Becoming knowledgeable about Black males' and Hispanic males' diverse coping strategies and health behaviors informs the community about how best to co-create spaces that aim to alleviate the traumatic experience of having directly or indirectly experienced community violence. The incidence of adverse health outcomes and traumatization associated with Black males' and Hispanic males' exposure to community violence is a public health issue that requires more research to develop alternative coping strategies to promote healthier behaviors. More efforts are needed in training males of color to serve adequately as mentors and mental health providers, strengthen connectivity, and facilitate healing practices with Black males and Hispanic males.

Book excerpt: While we hear much about the "culture of poverty" that keeps poor black men poor, we know little about how such men understand their social position and relationship to the American dream. Moving beyond stereotypes, this book examines how twenty-six poverty-stricken African American men from Chicago view their prospects for getting ahead. It documents their definitions of good jobs and the good life--and their beliefs about whether and how these can be attained. In its pages, we meet men who think seriously about work, family, and community and whose differing experiences shape their views of their social world. Based on intensive interviews, the book reveals how these men have experienced varying degrees of exposure to more-privileged Americans--differences that ground their understandings of how racism and socioeconomic inequality determine their life chances. The poorest and most socially isolated are, perhaps surprisingly, most likely to believe that individuals can improve their own lot. By contrast, men who regularly leave their neighborhood tend to have a wider range of opportunities but also have met with more racism, hostility, and institutional obstacles--making them less likely to believe in the American Dream. Demonstrating how these men interpret their social world, this book seeks to de-pathologize them without ignoring their experiences with chronic unemployment, prison, and substance abuse. It shows how the men draw upon such experiences as they make meaning of the complex circumstances in which they strive to succeed.
