Building on our exploration of the one-handed backhand technique in the previous volume, we are thrilled to embark on another exciting journey through the captivating and intricate realm of modern tennis. In this book, we will delve deeply into the technique and biomechanics of the two-handed backhand, a shot that has firmly established its place in the arsenals of many accomplished tennis players. The two-handed backhand, with its unique blend of power and control, stands as one of the most intriguing and captivating techniques in the sport. This shot demands not only technical finesse but also a profound comprehension of the biomechanical intricacies involved, as well as an unwavering pursuit of perfection. Throughout the pages of this book, I will be your guide, leading you through every facet of the two-handed backhand. Our journey begins with a meticulous examination of grips, where we will uncover how your choice of grip influences the direction and control of your shot. We will then pivot to the positioning of the body and feet, underscoring the critical role that proper posture plays in the successful execution of this shot. Our exploration will continue with a comprehensive analysis of the biomechanics underpinning the two-handed backhand. We will dissect the intricate coordination between the dominant arm and the non-dominant arm, a dynamic interplay that is pivotal in generating both power and precision. Together, we will navigate through the various phases of the shot, from the preparatory stance to the decisive acceleration phase, culminating in the crucial moment of contact with the ball and the graceful follow-through. Woven throughout the book are a series of practical exercises meticulously designed to cultivate the strength, flexibility, and coordination required to master the two-handed backhand. These drills are thoughtfully crafted to refine your technique and elevate your proficiency, ensuring you can consistently execute this shot with finesse. This book was created with a singular purpose: to serve as a comprehensive guide for tennis players of all levels, from novices just setting foot on the court to seasoned experts eager to elevate their mastery of the two-handed backhand. Tennis is an ever-evolving sport, a continuous learning experience, and I am excited to accompany you on this journey to enhance your skills and deepen your understanding of one of the most captivating and intricate shots in the game. So, prepare yourself for an enriching workout, and may your two-handed backhand evolve into a formidable and precise weapon that propels you to triumph on the tennis court.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study was designed to examine players' biomechanical parameters, such as the extension of arms (the distance from the racket's handle to center of mass), displacement of center of mass, and right knee angle. The purpose of this study was to find out how these biomechanical parameters would related to or affect performance, through the analysis of collected data. In this study, selected subjects were divided into two groups based on their represented skill levels: group A (level 5.5) and B (level 4). Each subject had played 20 strokes with their double-handed backhand. Data was collected from all subjects to measure their arms extension, displacement of center of mass and inflection of the right knee angle. Significant difference was found between group A and B on average arms extension at the contacting moment (group A=9.29 inches, group B=8.18 inches, p-0.047). However, obtained data did not show significant correlation between most individuals' arms extension and performance. These two findings indicate that, even breaking their habitual comfortable arms, extension may not result in an obvious improvement in the beginning. Yet for players who desire to improve their backhand onto the next level, coaches have to constantly remind them to extend more of their arms when they swing. There was a significant correlation found on one participant's displacement of center of mass and ball speed, as the center of mass increases, ball speed decreased. The remaining participants showed no relationship between their ball speed and displacement of center of mass. Also, higher skilled group A did not show statistically greater displacement of center of mass than lower skilled group B. There was significant correlation found on one participant's right knee angle and ball speed. When lower extremities were bent less, ball speed increased. The rest of the participants showed no relationship between ball speed and inflection of lower extremities. Therefore, all participants from group A to B did not show a utilization of their center of mass or bending more of their lower extremities in order to increase their ball speed. In conclusion, for skill level 4 and 5.5 players, arms extension will help them to improve their double-handed backhand. Instead of increasing the center of mass to speed up the racquet, keeping the center of mass stable along the stroke is the best way to perform a double-handed backhand stroke. For non-beginners, as well as the participants in this experiment, coaches do not have to constantly remind them to focus their inflection of lower extremities, and should give respect to trainees' personal style; unless they have technical mistakes. For future research, more work can be done on beginners, in order to find out if these three biomechanical parameters would related to or affect beginners' performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the movie Bull Durham, frustrated manager Joe Riggins stresses to his team, "This is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball." This simplification works well for biomechanists too, as sports can be broken down into specific physical tasks like throwing, hitting, catching, and running. There have been significant advances in understanding some actions, but not others. In the first ten years of the journal Sports Biomechanics, only 18 of 236 articles were about hitting a ball. This scarcity is startling considering that according to USA Today (May 20, 2005), three of the five hardest things to do in sports involve hitting a ball (#1: baseball batting, #4: golf tee shot, and #5: tennis serve return). This book provides the latest biomechanical research in the under-studied field of hitting a ball. The biomechanics of baseball, cricket, hockey, hurling, softball, table tennis, and tennis are all examined. The chapters are written in a style that will both satisfy the high standards of biomechanists and provide information for instructors and athletes to improve performance. This book is based on a special issue of Sports Biomechanics.
