Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of Sir Walter Ralegh Knt The following attempt at the formation of a bibliography of the works written by, or relating to, Sir Walter Ralegh, will perhaps be thought by some to embrace a much wider field than might be necessary; and so no doubt it would be, if a bibliography of the county of Devon were followed on the same lines. But where an individual or a place is selected as its subject, the enlarged plan appears to possess many advantages. It presents a favourable opportunity of giving additional particulars, and of adding extended notes to the various works noticed, so as to make it of more practical value. By pointing out the dates, titles, etc., of any reprints, references are facilitated; and by bringing into association a larger number of works under the same heading than would be advisable or practicable in the instance of a general work on the county, there results not simply a barren record of the titles of works, but a kind of connected literary history of the subject chosen. That such a plan, carried out with respect to other individuals, etc., would be of future service to county and other bibliographers, can scarcely be denied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Walter Ralegh: A Biography One main duty of a biographer of Ralegh is to be strenuously on the guard against degenerating into an apologist. But, above all, he ought to be versed in the art of standing aside. While explanations of obscurities must necessarily be offered, readers should be put into a position to judge for themselves of their sufficiency, and to substitute, if they will, others of their own. Commonly they want not so much arguments, however unegotistical and dispassionate, as a narrative. They wish to View and hear Ralegh himself to attend him on his quick course from one field of fruitful energy to another; to see him as his age saw him, in his exuberant vitality; not among the few greatest, but of all great, Englishmen the most universally capable. They desire facts, stated as such, simply, in chronological sequence, and, when it is at all practicable, in the actor's own words, not artificially carved, coloured, digested, and classified. As for failings and infirmities, they are more equitable and less liable to unreasonable disgusts than a bio grapher is inclined to fancy. They are content that a great man's faults, real or apparent, should be left to be justified, excused, or at all events harmonized, in the mass of good and ill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse on the Life and Character of Sir Walter Ralegh It may be interesting to preface our rapid sum mary of the efforts of Ralegh, with a brief reference to the geographical position of Guiana and the stories which were current at that period in regard to its wonderful riches. From an excellent work, styled El Dorado, laboriously prepared by Van Heuvel, we learn, that Guiana is that portion of South America, extending along the Atlantic coast, from the Oronoko to the Amazon, and is embraced be tween these Rivers, which are united by the junction of the Cassiqueara with the Amazon. Accord ing to Juan Martinez whose narrative Van Heuvel quotes, the name, El Dorado, which was applied to the City of Manoa, was derived from a certain cus tom of the inhabitants who, when their Emperor caroused with them, all those who pledged him have their bodies covered with a kind of white balsam.
