Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Difficulty in the Study of Modern Philosophy. Beside the great spans of ancient and mediæval civilizations, the 450 years of the modern period seem brief. The road is indeed relatively short from mediæval times to the century in which we live, and yet it proves difficult to the student who travels it for the first time. Even for the modern mind the study of modern philosophy is inherently more difficult than that of the ancient and mediæval. The preceding periods present new points of view, but these, once attained, lead along comparatively easy ways. The chief difficulty of the preceding periods is overcome when their peculiar view of things is gained; but the student of modern philosophy is confronted with difficulties all along the way. In the first place, modern philosophy is very complex because it is a conflict of various aspirations. It has neither the objectivity of ancient thought nor the logical consistency of mediæval thought. It arises from subjective motives, whose shadings are difficult to trace. The task is rendered harder by the fact that intimations of the problems in the history of modern philosophy are on the whole present in the beginner's mind; and yet at the same time his mind possesses, besides these, many mediæval notions as well. For the student to pass successfully through the entire length of modern thought from Cusanus to Spencer means, therefore, two things for him: he must gain an insight into the depth and significance of his own half-formed ideas; he must transcend or give up entirely his mediæval notions. If therefore philosophy represents the epoch that produces it,--either as the central principle or as the marginal and ulterior development of that epoch,--the modern can come to an understanding of the history of modern philosophy only by coming to an understanding of himself and his own inner reflections.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 3 In accordance with the character of the different epochs, modern philosophy has to rise above the philosophical wisdom of the ancients and the theological wisdom of lthe imiddle Ages. N o theories will meet the requirements of modern times, nor deserve the name of philosophy except such as recognise both the here, or real, of antiquity, and the hereafter, or ideal, of the Middle Ages, and attempt to reconcile the two. Any system which left one of these sides out.of account, or which did not admit that there was a point where the two coincided, would cease to be philosophical.' And the differ ence between systems depends upon the different manner in which these two sides are conceived of (as extension and thought, as nature and spirit, as real and rational, and in a Special degree upon the different methods of reconciling them. In the latter lies the main feature, and, therefore, the real principle of any system of modern philosophy. In the period of transition from the Middle Ages, there appeared side by side the philosophers who forgot God, and the mystics who despised the world. They Showed where the point Was to be found from which both natural and supernatural know ledge are seen to be' subordinate and partial aspects of a whole. For the Microcosmos of the' former, and the Micro theos or, God in miniature, of bohme, is.man, whose function. Is, to introduce thoughts of God into the world, to lead it to God. When philosophy becomes know ledge of man, it. Does more than merely transcend the one-sidedness of knowledge of the' Cosmos, and. Of know ledge of God; it now for the first time corresponds to our idea of it 2 and. Henceforth the path that philosophy follows is not to reach self by starting from the world or from God, but to start from self and find one's way back to a world and to God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Philosophy From Thales to Comte, Vol. 2 of 2: Modern Philosophy Ncient philosophy reigned for about years before its final deposition by Theology. An interval of another years may be assigned as the Transition Period between Ancient and Modern Philosophy, is. From' the extinction of the Greek schools, in the sixth century, to the separation of Philosophy from Theology, by Bacon and Descartes, in the sixteenth. The peculiarity of this Transition Period is the constant struggle of Reason to assert and justify her independence the claim of Philosophy to exist as a function of the human mind. Andthis claim, under varying fortunes, was made good. The struggle, long doubtful, ended in emancipation. We have seen how Philosophy, disengaging itself from Theology, successively tried to solve all the capital problems and how, failing everywhere, because the Method pursued was one which made failure inevitable, it once more, through out Christendom, relapsed under the dominion of Theology. We have now to see the inevitable disquiet of Thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: AUTHORITATIVE AND ACCESSIBLE, THIS LANDMARK WORK IS THE FIRST SINGLE-VOLUME HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY SHARED FOR DECADES 'A cerebrally enjoyable survey, written with great clarity and touches of wit' Sunday Times The story of philosophy is an epic tale: an exploration of the ideas, views and teachings of some of the most creative minds known to humanity. But there has been no comprehensive history of this great intellectual journey since 1945. Intelligible for students and eye-opening for philosophy readers, A. C. Grayling covers with characteristic clarity and elegance subjects like epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and the philosophy of mind, as well as the history of debates in these areas, through the ideas of celebrated philosophers as well as less well-known influential thinkers. The History of Philosophy takes the reader on a journey from the age of the Buddha, Confucius and Socrates. Through Christianity's dominance of the European mind to the Renaissance and Enlightenment. On to Mill, Nietzsche, Sartre, then the philosophical traditions of India, China and the Persian-Arabic world. And finally, into philosophy today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Beginner's History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 The pedagogical purpose of this history of philosophy is stated in the Preface to the first volume. It may be desirable in this place to restate what that purpose is. This book is intended as a text-book for sketch-courses in the history of philosophy. It is written for the student rather than for the teacher. It is a history of philosophy upon the background of geography and of literary and political history. Since the book is intended for the student, it makes the teacher all the more necessary; for it puts into the hands of the student an outline of the history of philosophy and into the hands of the teacher the class-room time for inspiring the student with his own interpretations. In making use of geographical maps, contemporary literature, and political history, this book is merely employing for pedagogical reasons the stock of information with which the student is furnished, when he begins the history of philosophy. The summaries, tables, and other generalizations are employed, as in text-books in other subjects, as helps to the memory. Therefore the book has the single purpose of arranging and organizing the material of the history of philosophy for the beginner. The student will be impressed with the short time-length of the modern period compared with the tremendously long stretches of the periods of antiquity.
