Book excerpt: Research in advanced fenestration systems has led to the development of the Heliodome project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Daylighting Laboratory. The MIT Heliodome project is dedicated to goniophotometry and the assessment of bidirectional photometric properties of light- (or heat- )redirecting facade systems by using digital cameras as multiple-points photosensors, that cover the visible and near infrared portions of the sunlight spectrum. Two cameras are used in this device: a charge couple device (CCD) camera using silicon detectors and a near infrared (NIR) camera using InGaAs sensors. Both cameras are mounted to a table which has two degrees of rotational freedom, altitude and azimuth. Using the rotating table and cameras in combination with an ellipsoidal dome, which is coated with a semi-transparent specula coating, allows a time-efficient and continuous measurement of bidirectional transmission (or reflection) density functions (BTDFs or BRDFs). This thesis seeks to enhance current Heliodome operations by developing a portable power source for the NIR camera. A portable power system has been designed and constructed to operate the NIR camera during measurement sessions. The portable power system allows the rotating table to rotate completely free of constraints caused by weight, imbalance, power and light path obstruction issues. This contribution to the Heliodome project provides the user with more reliable data and relief from disorderly setup.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When planning buildings in which people are to work and live, the efficient use of natural daylight and solar energy is increasingly important. The challenge is to compensate the different lighting requirements in winter and summer. Integrated daylight deflection systems buildings, utilize and store solar energy to save artificial lighting, air-conditioning and heating costs. Extensively researched and impressively illustrated with a large number of computer simulations and photographs of built examples, this volume is more than an introduction to the basic principles, functions, designs and calculation methods of advanced light-guidance technology for architects, lighting designers, building and climate engineers. In particular it provides detailed documentation of the new Retro-Technology systems, explaining the role they can and do play in integrated façade and building design and planning processes. distributed by Syndetic Solutions, Inc.

Book excerpt: "Frank Lloyd Wright: Writings and Buildings" presents through Wright's own words and works a survey of his achievement as a major figure of twentieth-century architecture. The text is complemented by more than 150 illustrations (a rich abundance of drawings, photographs, plans, and sketches) and the first complete list of Wright's executed buildings from 1893-1959, keyed to a map of the United States. Frank Lloyd wright has received recognition on a scale unparalleled in the history of architecture. Rebel and prophet, profound innovator, impatient with the sterile timidities and commercialization around him, he was yet an ardent conservative of traditional democracy, dedicated, in writing and building, to what he himself called "the sovereignty of the individual." In nearly seventy years of unceasing practice, Wright built nearly 500 structures and designed projects for as many more. He wrote a dozen books, slumberous magazine articles, and was immersed in a number of major architectural projects at the time of his death in 1959. -- From publisher's description.
