Book excerpt: IC designers are continuously facing the challenges from reduced CMOS feature sizes and supply voltages. ADCs that deliver satisfactory resolutions/speeds while utilizing the state-of-the-art technologies to save power are in high demand. The analog circuits are more and more assisted by various digital calibration techniques to get boosted performances. This dissertation is focused on a low-power 12-bit 12.5-MS/s successive approximation (SAR) ADC with a couple of calibration schemes. The performances of the proposed SAR ADC are enhanced in two directions. To reduce the power dissipation, a power saving strategy has been proposed. Also, several foreground calibration methods for SAR ADCs have been proposed to reduce power dissipation and enhance conversion accuracy. The design was fabricated in 40nm CMOS technology. Measurement results after calibration showed a SFDR of 82.2 dB, and a THD improvement of 22.5 dB. Finally, two new schemes to realize teraohm on-chip resistance are presented. One of the schemes utilizes a switched-capacitor array, and the other utilizes a switch-capacitor ladder. Using these schemes, large resistances can be fabricated with standard CMOS process in an affordable chip area.

This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers students and those new to the topic of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) a broad introduction, before going into details of the state-of-the-art design techniques for SAR and DS converters, including the latest research topics, which are valuable for IC design engineers as well as users of ADCs in applications. The book then addresses important topics, such as correct connectivity of ADCs in an application, the verification, characterization and testing of ADCs that ensure high-quality end products. Analog-to-digital converters are the central element in any data processing system and regulation loops such as modems or electrical motor drives. They significantly affect the performance and resolution of a system or end product. System development engineers need to be familiar with the performance parameters of the converters and understand the advantages and disadvantages of the various architectures. Integrated circuit development engineers have to overcome the problem of achieving high performance and resolution with the lowest possible power dissipation, while the digital circuitry generates distortion in supply, ground and substrate. This book explains the connections and gives suggestions for obtaining the highest possible resolution. Novel trends are illustrated in the design of analog-to-digital converters based on successive approximation and the difficulties in the development of continuous-time delta-sigma modulators are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nine bit analog to digital converter was designed for the DME-A satellite. This analog to digital converter uses the successive approximation principle to convert an analog voltage to its equivalent state. TI integrated circuits are used in the digital logic. The analog portion contains a voltage comparator, constant current sources, their respective solid state switches, a precision ladder network, and plus and minus reference supply voltages. A conversion is made in 400 microsec with an accuracy specified to be plus or minus 2% of full scale linear. The outputs are 9 bits straight binary with all logical 'ones' representing positive full scale of +275 mv and all logical 'zero' representing negative full scale of -275 mv. Negative logic defines a 'zero' to be high voltage, +3.5V, and a 'one' to be low voltage, 0.5V for this design. Power for this device is required from the plus and minus twenty volts and plus four volts. Continuous power is about 4/5 of a watt. Normal operation requires a pulsed power of about 1/2 watt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a radically new type of successive approximation, analog to digital converter employing the rapid and accurate exchange of charge between several capacitors is described. The method makes possible a startling reduction in number of circuit components, total power consumption, size and weight. Furthermore, the technique offers added performance capability with regard to accuracy and speed. Two experimental units were constructed and tested. These units provide 10-bit resolution, 18181 encodings per second, 200-kc bit rate, NRZ output, fullscale input of 0 to +5 volts, input impedance of 1 megohm, inherent sample and hold, continuous operation, or encode upon command. The units use only 45 transistors, require only 6.3 watts from the power supply, and have a volume of only 125 cubic inches and a weight of 3.25 pounds. Recommendations are included for several extensions of the development program to provide higher speeds, with further simplification, military prototype design, lower power consumption, and an unusual multiplexer based on capacitive charge transfer.
