Book excerpt: I have felt through the years that even though I didn't get much of an education and that I was raised hard with only the bare necessities being met; I didn't have to turn bad by learning to rob, cheat, and steal to get what I wanted out of life. Instead of following the path to destruction, I worked at making myself a smarter, better person so I could support my family well enough and not consider myself poor. Being poor isn't wrong, it was just that I didn't want to be poor, not anymore. It has taken me over ninety years to get to this day. Some of the years were hard and I really wouldn't like to live through them again, but many years were good and well worth repeating. I have traveled through the years of extreme poverty to a point in my life when I was worth a million plus dollars. That isn't the case right now, but it might be again. 90 Years and Still Going Strong is my story of the good years and the bad years. I hope you enjoy reading about my life as much as I have enjoyed living it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey is documented in this two-volume book numbers 14th and 15th of my series “Christianity and the Human Brain”. My journey is a testimony to Lord Jesus who took me by the hand from being a dismal soul to a renown neurosurgeon and anesthesiologist through a dream I had in 1974 with his words: “Son study all these books in my hand and I shall bless you and bless your patients”. Today, 35 years later, I continue to dedicate my life to my Lord, my patients and the residents I mentor. The fulfillment of my joy is when my Almighty helps me to care for my patients and guides my hand in both neurosurgery and the teaching of coming generations. There are many stories and reflections to share with you. Lessons learned in various topics. It is my honor to share with you my journey and my Joy. The two volume books contain 181 chapters, distributed in twenty sections (ten in each volume) covering major highlights in my life journey. In addition to deep reflections from my own life stories in faith and medicine, topics include Jesus, love, patient care, the human brain, neurosurgery, illness, residents, healthcare crises, meditations and memories over four decades. I hope you, the reader, to take the positives of my journey and find it useful to your own journey as a participant sojourning in this world with me. Blessed are those striving early on in their life to serve our Savior Jesus Christ, to him is the glory for ever and ever, Amen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook covers a broad spectrum of developments in QFT, emphasizing those aspects that are now well consolidated and for which satisfactory theoretical descriptions have been provided. The book is unique in that it offers a new approach to the subject and explores many topics merely touched upon, if covered at all, in standard reference works. A detailed and largely non-technical introductory chapter traces the development of QFT from its inception in 1926. The elegant functional differential approach put forward by Schwinger, referred to as the quantum dynamical (action) principle, and its underlying theory are used systematically in order to generate the so-called vacuum-to-vacuum transition amplitude of both abelian and non-abelian gauge theories, in addition to Feynman’s well-known functional integral approach, referred to as the path-integral approach. Given the wealth of information also to be found in the abelian case, equal importance is put on both abelian and non-abelian gauge theories. Particular emphasis is placed on the concept of a quantum field and its particle content to provide an appropriate description of physical processes at high energies, where relativity becomes indispensable. Moreover, quantum mechanics implies that a wave function renormalization arises in the QFT field independent of any perturbation theory - a point not sufficiently emphasized in the literature. The book provides an overview of all the fields encountered in present high-energy physics, together with the details of the underlying derivations. Further, it presents “deep inelastic” experiments as a fundamental application of quantum chromodynamics. Though the author makes a point of deriving points in detail, the book still requires good background knowledge of quantum mechanics, including the Dirac Theory, as well as elements of the Klein-Gordon equation. The present volume sets the language, the notation and provides additional background for reading Quantum Field Theory II - Introduction to Quantum Gravity, Supersymmetry and String Theory, by the same author. Students in this field might benefit from first reading the book Quantum Theory: A Wide Spectrum (Springer, 2006), by the same author.

Book excerpt: From the hills of Napa to the mountain slopes of Piedmont, writers Nick Wise and Linda Sunshine went in search of great wine and famous people who are also winemakers. In the past few years, helming a winery has become more and more popular among the rich and famous. But how much involvement in the actual process of making that wine did those celebrities actually have? Were they merely name endorsements or were they part of the incredibly difficult process of creating great wine from a field of grapes? Travelling around the world, Wise and Sunshine interviewed such winemakers as B. R. Cohn, manager of the Doobie Brothers; screenwriter Robert Kamen of The Karate Kid fame; race car drivers Mario Andretti and legendary football coach, Dick Vermeil. Written for fans of wine, travel, and the rich and famous, Celebrity Vineyards is a fascinating journey into a world that, for most of us, is only a dream. Here are artists and entrepreneurs, dreamers and businesspeople who share a love of wine, a respect for the grape, and the joy of creating something amazing out of the land.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant and enthralling.” —The Wall Street Journal A paradigm-shifting book from an acclaimed Harvard Medical School scientist and one of Time’s most influential people. It’s a seemingly undeniable truth that aging is inevitable. But what if everything we’ve been taught to believe about aging is wrong? What if we could choose our lifespan? In this groundbreaking book, Dr. David Sinclair, leading world authority on genetics and longevity, reveals a bold new theory for why we age. As he writes: “Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable.” This eye-opening and provocative work takes us to the frontlines of research that is pushing the boundaries on our perceived scientific limitations, revealing incredible breakthroughs—many from Dr. David Sinclair’s own lab at Harvard—that demonstrate how we can slow down, or even reverse, aging. The key is activating newly discovered vitality genes, the descendants of an ancient genetic survival circuit that is both the cause of aging and the key to reversing it. Recent experiments in genetic reprogramming suggest that in the near future we may not just be able to feel younger, but actually become younger. Through a page-turning narrative, Dr. Sinclair invites you into the process of scientific discovery and reveals the emerging technologies and simple lifestyle changes—such as intermittent fasting, cold exposure, exercising with the right intensity, and eating less meat—that have been shown to help us live younger and healthier for longer. At once a roadmap for taking charge of our own health destiny and a bold new vision for the future of humankind, Lifespan will forever change the way we think about why we age and what we can do about it.

Book excerpt: A fascinating investigation into how leaders' confidence can transform into hubris, which has the devastating potential to lead not only to their own downfall, but also to the collapse of entire organizations. While confidence is a vital attribute for any successful business leader, it is often taken too far – they fall into the pitfalls of hubris and, like Icarus, find themselves flying too close to the sun. Laying out the dangers of arrogant overconfidence for both individuals and organizations, this book explores both the economic and psychological costs of this destructive behaviour, and boldly argues for a new, revolutionary approach to leadership. Written by three world-renowned experts, Too Proud to Lead provides readers with the essential arsenal of tools for understanding, identifying, anticipating and coping with hubris, in both themselves and in their workplace. Supported by fascinating case studies and enlightening analysis, this is a much-needed antidote to the hubris plague spreading through the leadership of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Book Browser: Thanks for stopping to look at this book. With millions of books in the market place, what chance does mine have to survive? That is what I, the author, am concerned about. I have just given birth, so to speak, to a new baby, the novel that has absorbed my interest and been my work for several years. I know that I have tremendous competition, not only with contemporary authors but also with authors of the classics, going back hundreds of years. Yet, I feel that I need to add my experiences to these mountains of fiction. I feel as though I have done so by introducing the fictitious Rick Stevens to my readers. Rick Stevens is the main protagonist, not the hero, in my novels. Like many Midwestern American men born in the first half of the 20th century, he and they have much in common. As you have guessed, I visualize myself as the fictitious Rick Sevens; we are similar but not identical in all aspects. Most of my life, I have kept a diary or journal. Also, I have written and received many letters which I have arranged, in chronological order, in three-ring notebooks. Besides my memories, these records have provided me with raw material and realistic detail for my novels. In this novel, I have described Ricks courtships, three marriages, his two sons and family life, including his failures and his successes. Since my retirement, after 35 years from my work as a high school science teacher (physics, earth science, chemistry, biology), I have kept myself busy with my writing. This is my eighth book. I hope you find it interesting and worth reading. If you have read two of my previous novelsI WAS HERE: The Young Manhood and Education of Rick Stevens and To Become a Rich Americanyou will realize this novelA Farewell to Three Wivesbecomes the third volume in the Trilogy. Stanley B. Graham
