Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower—a riveting thriller and “all-too-convincing chronicle of science, espionage, action and speculation” (The Wall Street Journal). At an internment camp in Indonesia, forty-seven people are pronounced dead with acute hemorrhagic fever. When epidemiologist Henry Parsons travels there on behalf of the World Health Organization to investigate, what he finds will have staggering repercussions. Halfway across the globe, the deputy director of U.S. Homeland Security scrambles to mount a response to the rapidly spreading pandemic leapfrogging around the world, which she believes may be the result of an act of biowarfare. And a rogue experimenter in man-made diseases is preparing his own terrifying solution. As already-fraying global relations begin to snap, the virus slashes across the United States, dismantling institutions and decimating the population. With his own wife and children facing diminishing odds of survival, Henry travels from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia to his home base at the CDC in Atlanta, searching for a cure and for the origins of this seemingly unknowable disease. The End of October is a one-of-a-kind thriller steeped in real-life political and scientific implications, filled with the insight that has been the hallmark of Wright’s acclaimed nonfiction and the full-tilt narrative suspense that only the best fiction can offer.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the future of tourism, Sustainable Tourism Dialogues in Africa is inclusive of experienced and emerging researchers, as well as incorporating local stakeholders in the tourism industry: architects, tourism operators, sustainable tourism lobbyists, policy makers, archaeologists, and geographers. The editors are frontline sustainable tourism advocates in Africa, and the book’s thematic content is derived from 30 inter-university seminars on sustainable tourism hosted by Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda Kenya from 2017 to November 2019. These seminars involved the participation of 17 universities in Kenya, tourism operators, conservationists, developmentalists, investors, policy makers, and students. Every chapter is a voice projecting aspirations for the responsible management of tourism in Africa and promoting the ideals of sustainable tourism that young people in Africa advocate for the industry’s future. In so doing, the authors pinpoint the necessary actions for bringing about transformations in sustainable development of tourism. The book thus seeks to encourage debate, while facilitating the development of both theoretical and practical foundations for managing tourism sustainably in Africa.

This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Impact of COVID-19 on Prison Conditions and Penal Policy presents the results of a worldwide exchange of information on the impact of COVID-19 in prisons. It also focuses on the human rights questions that have been raised during the pandemic, relating to the treatment of prisoners in institutions for both juveniles and adults worldwide. The first part brings together the findings and conclusions of leading prison academics and practitioners, presenting national reports with information on the prison system, prison population rates, how COVID-19 was and is managed in prisons, and its impact on living conditions inside prisons and on reintegration programmes. Forty-four countries are covered – many in Europe, but also Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Perú, Costa Rica, Canada, the USA, Kenya, South Africa, China, India, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In the second part, thematic chapters concentrate explicitly on the impact of the pandemic on the application of international human rights standards in prisons and on worldwide prison population rates. The book concludes by drawing out the commonalities and diverging practices between jurisdictions, discussing the impact of measures introduced and reflecting on what could be learnt from policies that emerged during the pandemic. Particular attention is paid to whether "reductionist" strategies that emerged during the pandemic can be used to counteract mass incarceration and prison overcrowding in the future. Although the book reflects the situation until mid 2021, after the second and during the third wave of the pandemic, it is highly relevant to the current situation, as the living conditions in prisons did not change significantly during the following waves, which showed high infection rates (in particular in the general population), but increased vaccination rates, too. In prisons, problems the pandemic raises have an even greater impact than for the general society. Revealing many notable and interesting changes in prison life and in release programmes, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of penology, criminology, law, sociology and public health. It will also appeal to criminal justice practitioners and policy makers.

This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although COVID-19 full prime vaccination generates immunity against severe and life-threatening infections, there are still cases of breakthrough infections. This might be due to several causes — such as the fact that full prime vaccination might not generate enough immunity; that immunity wanes over time; or that the elderly, immunocompromised, transplant recipients and people with underlying diseases could suffer severe infections regardless of vaccination. Moreover, emerging new variants of concern (such as Delta or Omicron) that are highly infective and evade immunity could increase breakthrough infection. Booster shots could increase immunity and reduce the likelihood of having severe COVID and post-COVID-19 (long COVID). Immunocompromised or transplant recipients could generate immunity after booster shots even if they did not develop immunity after full prime. Moreover, booster shots not only protect vaccinated individuals, but they could also reduce the impact on lifestyle, public health and economics. This research topic aims to focus on the effect of COVID-19 booster shots and the evidence seen in animal models, clinical trials, real-world evidence, and systematic reviews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when Peru continues to reel from the impact of Covid-19 and the eruption of corruption scandals involving five former presidents, this book analyzes the persistence and the structural underpinnings of underdevelopment in Peru. During the commodities boom of 2004–2011, Peru experienced strong levels of economic growth, bringing poverty down and increasing the middle-class population. In the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the severe lack of structural economic and social improvements has been exposed. With the arrival of the pandemic, hospitals collapsed, oxygen supplies dwindled, and informality rose, with dire consequences for the vulnerable, and for those already working on subsistence wages. Delving into the history of the country, Jan Lust outlines the structural problems that came about following Peru’s post-colonial entrance into the world economy and the subsequent neoliberal extractive development model adopted in the 1990s. Only by understanding Peru’s specific political, economic, and social conditions can a path towards development be found. This book will be of interest to researchers working within politics, economics, critical development studies, and Latin American studies.
