The need for realistic and dependable methods for training operators of the new weapon systems now being acquired by the Armed Services is increasing, providing new management and technical challenges to industry. Despite advances in automation of prime equipment, and the increased use of built-in training capabilities in that prime equipment, the Department of Defense and the Armed Services continue to have significant and extensive training needs. Industry response to these needs, as reflected in these Proceedings and in the more than 50 exhibits at the conference, has been truly innovative. Not only is industry meeting the technical and management challenges, it is again demonstrating the cost effectiveness of training equipment over the use of operational equipment to solve training needs.

Book excerpt: This conference is part of a continuing program to promote cooperation between Government and Industry in the development of effective training equipment and foster an exchange of fresh concepts in training technology. Rapid advanced in weapon systems technology coupled with the reduced entry level qualifications of recruits present a significant challenge to the services. Training equipment integrated into well-designed training systems will play an increasingly important role in meeting this challenge. With the increased cost of operational equipment, alternatives to the widespread use of operational equipment for operator and maintenance training must be developed. Increased speed, ranges and cost of weapons severely limit use of actual weapons in training exercises. Increased cost of fuel and energy has caused curtailments in operational training, deployments and major exercises. The amount of space available to conduct training exercises is being reduced while the range of weapons is increasing. The papers published in these Proceedings came from all sectors of U.S. Government, foreign governments, industry and the academic community. The subject matter range from research, engineering, management, procurement, instructional systems, user evaluations, to logistic support of systems in the inventory.
