Book excerpt: As seen on PBS's American Spring Live, one of America's great nature-writers explores the magic and science of feathers Feathers are an evolutionary marvel: aerodynamic, insulating, beguiling. They date back more than 100 million years. Yet their story has never been fully told. In Feathers, biologist Thor Hanson details a sweeping natural history, as feathers have been used to fly, protect, attract, and adorn through time and place. Applying the research of paleontologists, ornithologists, biologists, engineers, and even art historians, Hanson asks: What are feathers? How did they evolve? What do they mean to us? Engineers call feathers the most efficient insulating material ever discovered, and they are at the root of biology's most enduring debate. They silence the flight of owls and keep penguins dry below the ice. They have decorated queens, jesters, and priests. And they have inked documents from the Constitution to the novels of Jane Austen. Feathers is a captivating and beautiful exploration of this most enchanting object.

Book excerpt: After the sudden, undetermined death of her son, the author takes you through the journey of how this changed her life from day one to now, ten years after her son's death. The content of the book is intended to take you through healing in a in a positive manner, seeking your true purpose through such devastating life challenge. She was inspired to write this book through many who found hope and inspiration by witnessing her journey.Long Description | Sit back, grab a cup of coffee and read through this book of healing and hope written in a way that is "conversational". When a child dies suddenly, without any medical rationale, one is challenged to find ways to move through this journey. The questions of "why" have to turn into, let's make a plan on how we will get through this rather than focusing on something that has no answers. The I "can do this" is what made us learn to carry the oppressively heavy weight of such a loss. What is intriguing about this journey is that I learned it is indeed possible to get through it. In fact, life can be good, joyful and meaningful once again. It is up to us to find the good in our tragedy. We are grateful to be able to do this by the grace of God. Our Faith plays a huge role in our ability to find the best of what life has to offer.Finding my purpose in life came through the struggling and asking of "why" do I need to go through this. The "responses" simply seemed to be, because you can. Also, what has become clear is that my suffering is intended to help others. When we help others, we help ourselves. This suffering made me realize that I am far stronger than I ever thought I was, but it is through faith, prayer, family and friends that allows me to see through the darkness. It is my purpose to be a "light" for those who can't find it on their own. There is much to gain from being in such a storm and I have learned that when I'm feeling low, tomorrow will be a better day. The saying my son left for us "Live by Faith, One Day at a Time" has been the most powerful of reminders. We only have the day we are in, yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't here yet..live in the moment and we do so in the best way we can. Our minds are powerful tools, so we must find positives in our lives to carry us through. We have control of very little in life, but we have control over how we choose to handle the difficulties in life. My prayer for the readers is that they too will find their own purpose and ways to find joy in life despite the dark they may now see most of the time. Dealing with a profound loss is incredibly difficult, but we are stronger than our situations. I am here to tell you, this is so true. I would have never believed it myself. My hope is that if there is only one thing in this book helps you, it has accomplished all that it needed to. Reading my journal, which is how the content of this book came about, was very difficult yet it reminded me of where I was and where I am today, ten years later. It reminded me of why so many wanted me to write this in a book form. While I resisted the task for many years, timing is everything and coming up on the ten year anniversary of our son's reward to eternal life, the timing is good now.Shattered hearts never heal to be the same, but the pieces come back together little by little and results in the "new" you, the you that is intended to be if you can seek the lessons to learn from struggles in life and see the good in each and every one. Nothing we experience is made to break us, our experiences are intended to "make us" who we are meant to be.Be that pillar of strength for those who need you. Make good of your suffering and live your best life.

Tempered by studies that emphasize the Western literary tradition, literary appreciation for Melville's use of folklore has been slow in developing. This study focuses on Melville's immersion with and borrowing from oral traditions: both music and narrative; tall-tale humour; nautical folklore; superstition; and legend. The book also acts as a general introduction to Melville's work.

Book excerpt: With the exception of the Aztec "Calendar Stone," the recently discovered monument of Coyolxauhqui-Chantico is the largest of all of the pre-hispanic Aztec monuments. Depicting an aspect of Chantico, the Aztec fire goddess, the monument was carved before 1478 A.D. Here, Aguilera (a historian at the Biblioteca Nacional de Antropologia presents an analysis of the symbolic elements of the monument and places the symbology within the context of current knowledge of the belief systems of the Aztecs and their representations in artifacts. Also included within the volume is a short 11-page paper by H.B. Nicholson (anthropology, U. California at Los Angeles) touching upon the same topic. Book excerpt: How to Draw a Dragon: "Cautiously approach the dragon, offer it a piece of candy or a little sister, and draw while it happily munches away." From the artist behind the wildly popular NeonDragonArt.com, DragonArt will help you create mythical beasts that awe, delight, and disturb the sweet dreams of little ones. Armed only with your trusty pencil and ink pen, you will begin your artistic quest by conquering a super-easy dragon that even the densest of wyvern could draw. With pace quickened by this cool achievement, you shall forge bravely onward to discover simple secrets and spiffy tricks for making your creature friendly or fierce, sorrowful or cynical—drawing them from all different perspectives, in flight or at rest (so vain, those dragons—they love to strike a pose!) and incorporating various styles of heads, limbs, wings, horns, frills, scales, tails and other details to make your particular beast original, believable and so darn groovy. Because dragons enjoy having others around to terrorize, disembowel and occasionally hang out with, this book will also teach you how you to populate your alternate universe with a whole cast of fantastic creatures, including mythical griffins, guardian gargoyles and deadly basilisks. All this within the curiously compelling, beautifully beastly, and brightly colored pages you hold in your hands, which by now are no doubt trembling with keen anticipation. So quit dragon your feet! (Ugh, wyrms hate puns!) Buy this book now and make your wildest, wickedest, fire-breathingest fantasies come true!
