Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving to America turns H&à's life inside out. For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awakening Courage: Stories of Grit, Resilience, and Toughness depicts the gifts and talents of people residing in a rural southeastern Ohio community nestled in the Appalachian foothills. But it could very well be any community in America. The author writes insightfully of the real lives of individuals and groups who transformed their communities. He does this with a clever mix of spirit, storytelling, and practical application strategies which he includes at the end of every chapter in the form of Points to Ponder, Questions for Discussion, and Applications to Community Development. You will be introduced to ‘gritty’ people who refused to take no for an answer and learned to rise above challenges and adversity and achieve prosperity in the process. They are people of character, humility, integrity, and passion. They are mentally tough, accountable to a cause bigger than themselves and “walk the talk” daily in their journey toward becoming all that they were meant to be, not what someone else said they should be. As you read this book, you are encouraged to examine your heart, your mind, and your experience about your place in any community - family, neighborhood, school, workplace, church, city or village. You will learn how people can bring their very best efforts to the present moment - which is the only time we have. So get comfy and grab your favorite brew and be prepared to learn more about the core qualities and traits of change-makers who were not born of privilege, genius, or wealth. They were just ordinary people who seized the opportunities given to them and made a difference and impacted their community along the way.

Book excerpt: Richard Lewis had been a youth therapist, foster carer and teacher in a large city comprehensive school for over 20 years, but his personal integrity was suddenly brought into question by the claims of a former student 16 years ago. His dedicated life as a supporter of delinquent and wayward teenagers was brought to a sudden halt, where, at one point, suicide appeared to be the best way out. The Accused is a harrowing autobiography of an innocent man, a personal ordeal where it was felt that 'the system' presumes one is 'guilty till proven innocent'. When a child abuse allegation is made, where two people stand by irreconcilable testimonies, a strategy group of professionals has to make a decision that has serious long-term consequences. The Accused presents the voice of a victim subjected to an uncorroborated disclosure. This book argues for a review of current child protection procedures, for an examination of stereotypical beliefs and assumptions centring of an enquiry, and for the case to examine the social implications of making unfounded allegations of abuse against professional personnel.

Book excerpt: Written by a journalist, this book depicts the day-to-day struggles and concerns of inmates a the Connecticut Correctional Institution in Niantic (renamed the Janet S. York correctional Institution), the state's only prison for women. Build in 1917 as a work farm for prostitutes, unwed mothers, and other women of allegedly immoral character, "the Farm," as it is still called, has long served as a barometer of prevailing social attitudes toward women. In the summer of 1992, Andi Rierden obtained permission from the warden at Niantic to conduct research on life inside the institution. During the next three and a half years, she spent more than fifteen hundred hours among the women, recording interviews, strolling the grounds with inmates and corrections officers, sharing meals, attending classes and group counseling sessions, and tracking former inmates after their release. The stories these women tell shed light ton a wide range of issues, from the effects of more stringent drug laws and sentences to the rise of violence among inmates. In the process it becomes clear that the ideal of rehabilitation has been largely abandoned and replaced by a belief in punishment and retribution.
