Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biannual Formal Methods in Computer Aided Design conference (FMCAD 2000)is the third in a series of conferences under that title devoted to the use of discrete mathematical methods for the analysis of computer hardware and so- ware. The work reported in this book describes the use of modeling languages and their associated automated analysis tools to specify and verify computing systems. Functional veric ation has become one of the principal costs in a modern computer design e ort. In addition, verica tion of circuit models, timing, power, etc., requires even more eo rt. FMCAD provides a venue for academic and - dustrial researchers and practitioners to share their ideas and experiences of using discrete mathematical modeling and veric ation. It is noted with interest by the conference chairmen how this area has grown from just a few people 15 years ago to a vibrant area of research, development, and deployment. It is clear that these methods are helping reduce the cost of designing computing systems. As an example of this potential cost reduction, we have invited David Russino of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. to describe his veric ation of ?oating-point - gorithms being used in AMD microprocessors. The program includes 30 regular presentations selected from 63 submitted papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed and peer-reviewed outcome of the Formal Methods and Testing (FORTEST) network - formed as a network established under UK EPSRC funding that investigated the relationships between formal (and semi-formal) methods and software testing - now being a subject group of two BCS Special Interest Groups: Formal Aspects of Computing Science (BCS FACS) and Special Interest Group in Software Testing (BCS SIGIST). Each of the 12 chapters in this book describes a way in which the study of formal methods and software testing can be combined in a manner that brings the benefits of formal methods (e.g., precision, clarity, provability) with the advantages of testing (e.g., scalability, generality, applicability).

Book excerpt: The idea of a FAABS workshop was first conceived in 1998 at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, while the Agent Technology Development Group in the Advanced Architectures and Automation Branch (Code 588) was developing a prototype agent community to automate satellite ground operations. While developing this system, several race conditions arose within and between agents. Due to the complexity of the agents and the communications between them, it was decided that a formal approach was needed to specify the agents and the communications between them, so that the system could be checked for additional errors. A formal model of the inter-agent communications was developed, with the expectation that this would enable us to find more errors. Success in this convinced us of the importance of using formal methods to model agent-based systems. To share our own experiences and to learn how others were approaching these issues, we decided to hold a workshop on formal methods and agent-based systems. The response was overwhelming. The result was the first FAABS workshop, which was held at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Posters, paper presentations, panels, and an invited talk by J Moore stimulated much discussion and subsequent collaboration.

Turku, situated in the south western corner of the country, is the former capital of Finland. The ? conference was organized jointly by Abo Akademi University and Turku Centre for Computer Science. The theme of IFM 1999 was the integration of state and behavioral based formalisms. For IFM 2000 this was widened to include all aspects pertaining to the integration of formal methods and formal notations. One of the goals of IFM 2002 was to further investigate these themes. Moreover, IFM 2002 explored the relations between formal methods and graphical notations, especially the industrialstandardlanguageforsoftwaredesign, theUni?edModelingLanguage (UML). The themes of IFM 2002 re?ect what we believe is a growing trend in the Formal Methods and Software Engineering research communities. Over the last threedecades, computerscientistshavedevelopedarangeofformalismsfocusing on particular aspects of behavior or analysis, such as sequential program str- tures, concurrentprogramstructures, dataandinformationstructures, temporal reasoning, deductive proof, and model checking. Much e?ort is now being - voted to integrating these methods in order to combine their advantages and ensure they scale up to industrial needs. Graphical notations are now widely used in software engineering and there is growing recognition of the importance ofprovidingthesewiththeformalunderpinningsandformalanalysiscapabilities found in formal methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SPIN workshop is a forum for researchers interested in the subject of automata-based, explicit-state model checking technologies for the analysis and veri?cation of asynchronous concurrent and distributed systems. The SPIN - del checker (http://netlib.bell-labs.com/netlib/spin/whatispin.html), developed by Gerard Holzmann, is one of the best known systems of this kind, and has attracted a large user community. This can likely be attributed to its e?cient state exploration algorithms. The fact that SPIN’s modeling language, Promela, resembles a programming language has probably also contributed to its success. Traditionally, the SPIN workshops present papers on extensions and uses of SPIN. As an experiment, this year’s workshop was broadened to have a slightly wider focus than previous workshops in that papers on software veri?cation were encouraged. Consequently, a small collection of papers describe attempts to analyze and verify programs written in conventional programming languages. Solutions include translations from source code to Promela, as well as specially designed model checkers that accept source code. We believe that this is an - teresting research direction for the formal methods community, and that it will result in a new set of challenges and solutions. Of course, abstraction becomes the key solution to deal with very large state spaces. However, we also see - tential for integrating model checking with techniques such as static program analysis and testing. Papers on these issues have therefore been included in the proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Sixth Workshop on Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control (HSCC 2003), which was held in Prague, during April 3–5, 2003. The Hybrid Systems workshops attract researchers interested in the modeling, analysis, control, and implementation of systems which involve the interaction of both discrete and continuous state dynamics. The newest results and latest developments in hybrid system models, formal methods for analysis and control, computational tools, as well as new applications and examples are presented at these annual meetings. The Sixth Workshop continued the series of workshops held in Grenoble, France (HART’97), Berkeley, California, USA (HSCC’98), Nijmegen, The Neth- lands (HSCC’99), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (HSCC 2000), Rome, Italy (HSCC 2001), and Stanford, California, USA (HSCC 2002). Proceedings of these workshops have been published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in C- puter Science (LNCS) series. This year we assembled a technical program committee with a broad expertise in formal methods in computer science, control theory, applied mathematics, and arti?cial intelligence. We received a set of 75 high-quality submitted papers. After detailed review and discussion of these papers by the program committee, 36 papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop, and the ?nal versions of these papers appear in this volume.
