Book Synopsis African Art and Agency in the Workshop by : Sidney Littlefield Kasfir
Download or read book African Art and Agency in the Workshop written by Sidney Littlefield Kasfir and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Compelling case studies demonstrate how African workshops have long mediated collective expression and individual imagination.” —Allen F. Roberts, University of California, Los Angeles The role of the workshop in the creation of African art is the subject of this revelatory book. In the group setting of the workshop, innovation and imitation collide, artists share ideas and techniques, and creative expression flourishes. African Art and Agency in the Workshop examines the variety of workshops, from those which are politically driven or tourist oriented, to those based on historical patronage or allied to current artistic trends. Fifteen lively essays explore the impact of the workshop on the production of artists such as Zimbabwean stone sculptors, master potters from Cameroon, wood carvers from Nigeria, and others from across the continent. Contributions by Nicolas Argenti, Jessica Gershultz, Norma Wolff, Christine Scherer, Silvia Forni, Elizabeth Morton, Alexander Bortolot, Brenda Schmahmann, Chika Okeke-Agulu, Karen E. Milbourne and Namubiru Rose Kirumira “A closer examination of the workshop provides important insights into art histories and cultural politics. We may think we know what we mean when we use the term ‘workshop,’ but in fact the organization of groups of artists takes on vastly different forms and encourages the production of diverse styles of art within larger social structures and power dynamics.” —Victoria Rovine, University of Florida “Taken as a whole, the case studies provide a wide window into the very diverse structural and functional characteristics of workshops. They also clearly describe how African workshops have served both contemporary political and cultural needs and have responded to patronage, whether it be traditional or stimulated by tourism.” —African Studies Review
Download or read book Mapula written by Brenda Schmahmann and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mapula Embroidery Project in the Winterveld is one of the most important community art projects in South Africa. In addition to generating an income for economically disadvantaged women, Mapula embroideries couple high levels of technical and visual artistry with topics that speak eloquently of public histories as well as women's personal experiences. Dazzling in colour and inventive in design, the embroideries also engage compellingly with social and political issues that have shaped the lives of their makers. In Mapula: Embroidery and Empowerment in the Winterveld, Brenda Schmahmann discusses the complex circumstances that resulted in the founding of Mapula in 1991, when the Winterveld was part of the former homeland of Bophuthatswana. She examines the backgrounds of project members, revealing how women's experiences of disempowerment have been bound up with the politics of race and gender. She explores the ways in which the Mapula Embroidery Project is managed and organised, identifying the challenges that confront those engaged in development work. She also offers a detailed analysis of a range of embroideries, placing particular emphasis on the women's choice and treatment of subject matter and suggesting that topics chosen by the embroiderers frequently address political and economic disempowerment. As her study indicates, Mapula embroideries are remarkable works of art that not only attest to the creativity of South African women but also provide us with invaluable insights about the anxieties and aspirations of females in a transforming society. Mapula: Embroidery and Empowerment in the Winterveld is the most comprehensive study of Mapula to be published to date and the first book with an exclusive focus on a community embroidery project in South Africa. --Amazon.
Book Synopsis Reinventing Architecture and Interiors by : Graham Cairns
Download or read book Reinventing Architecture and Interiors written by Graham Cairns and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of design has traditionally been a story of new ideas, new theories and, above all, new construction. However, today, the developed world is on the cusp of a new era. The financial crisis, the sustainability movement and the conservation agenda are all leading to ever more alterations of existing buildings - and ever fewer new build projects. This new condition will have major consequences for all those involved in the design of the built environment both now, and in the future. In one regard, the simple economics of new build is bringing into question the need, indeed the desirability, of constructing from scratch. From a sustainable perspective the same picture can be seen to be forming, at least in certain contexts. The material resources involved in new-build make it an option ecologically detrimental and damaging when compared with renovation. Both these issues sit alongside a now deep rooted heritage agenda in Europe and, increasingly, in the Americas, Africa and Asia. Invariably, the arguments put forward from this perspective discourage new build when it involves the destruction of existing valued building stock. These issues, that will invariably alter the nature of the profession form the basis of Reinventing Architecture and Interiors - a book that challenges the standard view on the relationship between interiors and architecture. Written by international experts it is fully illustrated with contemporary examples. It is an important addition to the literature of architecture and interiors today.

Book excerpt: Retinal Shift is the catalogue for Mikhael Subotzky's 2012 Standard Bank Young Artist Exhibition, which will tour every major museum in South Africa. Retinal Shift investigates the practice and mechanics of looking - in relation to the history of Grahamstown, the history of photographic devices, and Subotzky's own history as an artist. The works draw on archival portraits from the last century, found surveillance footage, as well as Subotzky's own photographs from various series' that he re-contextualizes. The opening work in the book is a self-portrait that Subotzky made with the assistance of an optometrist. High-resolution images of his left and right retinas sit side by side. Says Subotzky: "I was fascinated by this encounter. At the moment that my retinas, parts of my essential organs of seeing, were photographed, I was blinded by the apparatus that made the images.
