They were transferred to Pearl Harbor, to the largest posting of African-American servicemen in the world, despite the Navy's promise that they would serve in Chapel Hill for the war's duration. As frontline pioneers in breaking the Navy's color barrier in 1942, B-1 served during times of racial unrest without incident, despite provocation that lurked almost everywhere.
