Book excerpt: Affinities and contrasts in the work of two icons of modern sculpture In terms of modern sculpture, there are few artists who can claim the same level of influence as Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Hans "Jean" Arp (1886-1966). Rodin's naturalistic rather than decorative approach to sculpture revolutionized the field in the late 19th century, while Arp prompted another wave of experimentation in the early 1900s with his abstract sculpture. In this volume, the oeuvres of both pioneers are placed in conversation with one another to demonstrate their artistic affinities as well as their creative contrasts. As Rodin moved away from the preeminent trends of mythological allegory in order to focus on the organic elegance of the human figure, he eventually approached an Impressionistic style. Arp, as an early member of the Dadaist movement, reinterpreted many of the trends brought forth by Rodin, emphasizing abstraction as a means for conveying pathos. This publication allows readers to appreciate the evolution of both artists individually and in the context of art history as a whole: as sculptural milestones, the creations of Rodin and Arp provide a vivid illustration of fundamental developments in modern sculpture stylistically and ideologically. Curator Raphaël Bouvier provides textual insight along with several other acclaimed art scholars, including Catherine Chevillot, Director of the Musée Rodin.

Book Synopsis Amuse-Bouche: the Taste of Art by : Antje Baecker
Download or read book Amuse-Bouche: the Taste of Art written by Antje Baecker and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One literally can't argue about taste, but there is certainly a lot to say about it. How is it articulated within the spectrum of our senses? And how are perceptions of taste created in the first place? Can taste be manipulated? How can taste be verbalized? What role does the experience of taste play in social interaction and as artistic material? After the Museum Tinguely addressed visitors' senses with Belle Haleine: The Scent of Art and Please Touch: Art's Sense of Touch, an interdisciplinary symposium on taste and food culture followed in early 2019, which put the many fields of human activity affected by taste to the test. This book contains the resulting essays written from the points of view of art and cultural history, as well as psychology, linguistics, and biochemistry.
Download or read book Rudolf Steiner written by Rudolf Steiner and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steiner is regarded as one of the most influential reformers of the twentieth century. He created extraordinary furniture designs and initiated a building style that seems to prefigure contemporary architecture. At the same time, he advocated a holistic view of humanity which shows its influence in many areas of our lives today, and he inspired artists such as Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Joseph Beuys. This book is the first presentation of Steiner's work in its full breadth. Numerous scholarly essays discuss the origins, context and influence of Steiner's work, complemented by over 500 illustrations, inlcuding both new and historical photographs, architectural plans, notebook sketches and artworks. This material is supplemented by comparisons with current design trends, from works by Olafur Eliasson and design objects by Konstantin Grcic to the architecture of Herzog & de Meuron. With texts by Philip Ursprung, Paul Virilio, Mateo Kries, Walter Kugler, Markus Bruderlin, Wolfgang Pehnt, Julia Althaus, Wolfgang Zumdick and others.
Book Synopsis Serra Brancusi by : Constantin Brancusi
Download or read book Serra Brancusi written by Constantin Brancusi and published by Hatje Cantz Pub. This book was released on 2011 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The starting point for this book is the work of Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), as expressed in his reduction of volume to tease out formal essence. Some thirty-five exemplary works by Brancusi, among them 'The Kiss' and the 'Column of the Infinite', thus initiate a line of inquiry into the essence and the possibilities of sculpture, the discussion of which continues with a selection of works from different periods by Richard Serra (born 1939), whose art opens up new 'ways of seeing' to his viewers. The resulting juxtaposition of Brancusi's sensuous modeling of marble, bronze, wood, and plaster with Serra's minimalist steel sculptures set in motion a fascinating dialogue. The essays by Friedrich Teja Bach, Alfred Pacquement, Oliver Wick, and others conspire with the concentrated selection of works to underscore not only the contrasts between these two pioneering artists, but also their common ground enabling the reader to experience anew the universal power of sculpture." --Jacket.

Download or read book Th Rose Prblm written by Roni Horn and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A drawing in the Th Rose Prblm cuts together two drawings. Each with one of two phrases. Composing these two phrases in their various iterations: "Rose is a rose is a rose" or "a rose is a rose is a rose" with "come up smelling like roses" or "coming up smelling like a rose", etc. leads to all kinds of nonsense. But it also leads to another sense. I found a lot of humor here, some of it pretty dumb. Composing these phrases into all the possible outcomes became a metaphor for identity. There are 48 drawings and it's one work. Cumulatively the shades of meaning obtain a complexity and range that stand in for the mutable, changeable nature of identity. I also found that the more I did the more there was. Roni Horn
