Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artwashing the Past: Context Matters contributes to the wider discussion about the appropriate due diligence process that should be conducted prior to the acquisition of cultural objects. The chapters were written as museums in Europe and North America were facing a series of claims on recently acquired objects in their collections in the light of the photographic dossiers that had been seized from dealers in Switzerland and Greece. They engage with some of the recent debates over cultural property that include the Ka Ka Nefer mummy mask currently in the St Louis Art Museum, and the Leutwitz Apollo acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Two of the essays reflect on the recent and controversial metal-detecting finds in England, the so-called Crosby Garrett helmet and the Lenborough Hoard.

Book Synopsis The Roman Cemetery at Brougham, Cumbria by : H. E. M. Cool
Download or read book The Roman Cemetery at Brougham, Cumbria written by H. E. M. Cool and published by Roman Society Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations to the east of the fort and vicus of Brougham, in 1966 and 1967, the results of which have only recently been evaluated, uncovered a cemetery that was in use during the 3rd century. A population of all ages were buried in the cemetery, cremated along with their grave goods, and intered in urns accompanied by other ceramic and glass vessels. This substantial report examines and catalogues the graves and other features before discussing the evidence of pyres and biers, the animal bone, the vessels, the personal ornaments and other equipment, the tombstones and the inscribed stones. Having desribed in detail the archaeological and environmental evidence, the author then draws conclusions about funerary rites at Brocavum in the 3rd century and suggests a connection with Pannonia.

Download or read book Cumbria's Prehistoric Monuments written by Adam Morgan Ibbotson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cumbria is a land built from stone. Whether it is Hadrian's Wall, Kendal Castle or the beautiful fells of the Lake District – for thousands of years people have found a certain elegance and utility in stone. Nestled amongst these common relics are a multitude of massive stone monuments, built over 3,000 years before British shores were ever touched by Roman sandals. Cumbria's 'megalithic' monuments are among Europe's greatest and best-preserved ancient relics but are often poorly understood and rarely visited. This updated and revised edition of Cumbria's Prehistoric Monuments aims to dispel the idea that these stones are merely 'mysterious'. Within this book you will find credible answers, using up-to-date research, excavation notes, maps and diagrams to explore one of Britain's richest archaeological landscapes. Featuring stunning original photography and illustrated diagrams of every megalithic site in the county, Adam Morgan Ibbotson invites you to take a journey into a land sculpted by ancient hands.
