Book Synopsis Mark's Gospel: An Actological Reading by : Malcolm Torry
Download or read book Mark's Gospel: An Actological Reading written by Malcolm Torry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This might look like an ordinary commentary on Mark’s Gospel, but it isn’t one. It understands reality as Action, actions, change, diversity, movement, and the dynamic, rather than as Being, beings, the unchanging, the unitary, rest, and the static, and it reads Mark’s Gospel in the light of that distinctive understanding of reality. It is all about action, change, and diversity, and it understands God, Jesus, and ourselves as action, change, and diversity. The initial chapter introduces the action-based understanding of reality as action in changing patterns—an actology, rather than an ontology. Then follows a section-by-section close study of the Gospel. The result is a unique and somewhat unexpected reading of the text and a distinctive theology to match.

Book Synopsis The Liberated Gospel by : Gilbert Bilezikian
Download or read book The Liberated Gospel written by Gilbert Bilezikian and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally agreed that Mark's Gospel was the first to have been written and that the Markan narrative created a literary form that inspired Matthew, Luke, and to a lesser extent, John to follow suit with the writing of their own gospels. But where did Mark go to find a framework that would shape his story? This question has been debated for more than two centuries. Several theories have been propounded but none without sufficient evidence to gain broad acceptance. It is the thesis of this book that Mark drew on the Greek tragedy, the most suitable literary genre of his time, to organize the oral and written traditions that he had collected. The Greek tragic genre had been created with the works of the great masters of the Fifth Century BC, and later, had been codified by Aristotle. The extraordinary points of congruence between the form of the Gospel and the canons of Greek drama are carefully explored in the Liberated Gospel. The compelling conclusion is that there is a relation of dependency whereas Mark used the form of Greek tragedy as a template without compromising the integrity of the story. As the title of the book suggests, the use of ancient tragedy by Mark served also another purpose. The Gospel was being written at a time during the early history of the church when its Judaistic faction attempted to impose the requirements of the Mosaic law on Gentile believers (as attested by Galatians and the Council of Jerusalem). By telling the very Jewish but universally relevant story of Jesus in the mode of the supreme Gentile literary genre of antiquity, Mark was proclaiming the manifesto that the gospel of Christ was not the exclusive property of a narrow ethnic group but that it belonged to all humanity.

Book Synopsis Miracles and the Kingdom of God by : Myrick C. Shinall
Download or read book Miracles and the Kingdom of God written by Myrick C. Shinall and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade or so, scholarship on the miracles of Jesus has shifted from reconstructions of the historical Jesus to the questions of why and to what end early Jesus-followers told stories about miracles. Myrick Shinall contends that Mark and Q contain two distinct ways of remembering Jesus’s miracles in relation to his proclamation of the kingdom of God. He compares three cases of Mark-Q overlaps which feature miracles: the Beelzebul controversy, the commissioning of the disciples, and the testing or “temptation” narratives, and finds that in Mark, the miracles and the kingdom of God both point to Jesus’ identity as a divine figure, whereas in Q, Jesus and the miracles point instead to the coming kingdom of God. Shinall further argues that these different views represent different strategies for creating group identities for Jesus’ followers, strategies that came into conflict as the movement’s identity coalesced. At length, he shows that the mix of “high” and “low” Christology in the Synoptic tradition requires reframing of the current debate over how early a “high” Christology developed in the nascent Jesus movement.

Download or read book The Jesus Seed written by Del Walters and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-11-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitler believed the Lance of Longinius, or the spear used to pierce the side of Jesus while he hung on the cross, would make him immortal. Michael Ude believes it contains the actual DNA of Christ. When that DNA is stolen, the delivery of a single video tape sets the faith based community on its head. The tape claims to contain footage of a woman who is carrying the Jesus Seed, or Christs clone. But that is just the beginning of an all out war on Christianity. It begins when a suicide fighter pilot files a supersonic jet into the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Brazil. Then a woman named Mary is infected with the deadly Ebola virus under a giant cross in Illinois. Suddenly suicide bombers target Notre Dame, in Paris, the National Cathedral and Mormon Temples in Washington, D.C. But these terrorists arent Islamic. Theyre faithful Christians. Behind it all, a billionaire bent on revenge and a Catholic Cardinal, both convinced the Apocalypse is already happening. The Jesus Seed is set against a factual backdrop that says human cloning is not only possible, but probably has already happened. The Jesus Seed examines what would happen if science brought about the Apocalypse as called for the in the book of Revelations. The Jesus Seed is a head on battle between science and faith. Its a life and death race against a centuries old biblical deadlinethe birth of Christ. Will history repeat itself? Three decades after the cloning of Dolly the Sheep, and Baby Louise Brown, is it really possible to clone Jesus? What role will race play? These are just some of the questions explored in Del Walters explosive follow to The RACE and Wereth, the Black Parade, The Jesus Seed.
