Book excerpt: 3XN was founded as Nielsen, Nielsen and Nielsen in Aarhus in 1986 by the architects Kim Herforth Nielsen, Lars Frank Nielsen (partner until 2002) and Hans Peter Svendler Nielsen (partner until 1992). The studio quickly became known for two things: their preference for social and humane architecture, and projects demanding a high level of detail and employing workmanship of the highest quality. A first breakthrough came with the court house in Holstebro (1992), which was followed by a number of first prizes in architectural competitions, such as the Danish Embassy in Berlin (1998) and the concert hall Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam (1997). The two latter structures made a name on the international architectural scene for the artistically ambitious Danish architects with their social approach and carefully planned spatial formations. The Muziekgebouw (2005) the Museum of Liverpool (2011) and The Blue Planet Aquarium shows the expertise on culture buildings and prestigious international proyects, with emphasis on original solutions in plans, facades and organisation of the interiors

Book excerpt: "Mind Your Behaviour invites you into 3XNs architectural universe, demonstrating how to create buildings with a focus on behaviour and placing people in the middle of this examination. Mind Your Behaviour is an invitation for reflection. It invites the spectator to approach the world thoughtfully and with curiosity in order to examine how architectural surroundings affect our behaviour. Mind Your Behaviour focuses on and challenges the concept of behaviour as expressed in seven themes directly associated with the design universe of 3XNs architectural practice. These themes of 'Cultural Behaviour', 'Learning Behaviour', 'Human Behaviour', 'Social Behaviour', 'Public Behaviour', 'Building Behaviour', and 'Responsible Behaviour', place focus on that which happens when architecture shapes behaviour and indeed when architecture through its own behaviour shapes our lives and relationships. This publication has its basis in the exhibition 'Mind Your Behaviour', displayed for the first time at the Danish Architecture Center (DAC)" -- Amazon.

The Changing Shape of Practice provides a handbook of examples for practices that wish to integrate more research into their work and a reference book for students that seek to prepare themselves for the changing shape of practice in architecture. It addresses the increasing integration of research undertaken in architectural practices of different sizes ranging from small to very large practices from the UK, USA, Europe and Asia. The book is organized according to the size of the practices which is significant in that it addresses the different structures and resourcing requirements that are enabled by specific practice sizes, as this determines and constrains the type, scope and modes of research available to a given practice. The practices covered include: Woods Bagot Perkins + Will White AECOM UN Studio Shop Architects PLP Architecture Kieran Timberlake 3XN ONL AZPML Thomas Herzog + Partners Herreros Arquitectos Spacescape OCEAN Design Research Association By taking stock of the current shape of practice, the book provides essential information for professional architects who are integrating research into their practice.

This book responds to one critical question for the design and construction industry: “how are architects, engineers, and contractors using information technology to further automate their practices?” Addressing the use of new digital technologies, particularly parametric automation for design and construction in the building industry, this book looks at how technologically advanced architectural and engineering practices are semi-automating their design processes by using sophisticated algorithms to transform their workflows. The book also documents a set of firms that are further advancing automation by using pre-fabrication, modularization, and custom designs via robotics.

Book excerpt: Design Transactions presents the outcome of new research to emerge from ‘Innochain’, a consortium of six leading European architectural and engineering-focused institutions and their industry partners. The book presents new advances in digital design tooling that challenge established building cultures and systems. It offers new sustainable and materially smart design solutions with a strong focus on changing the way the industry thinks, designs, and builds our physical environment. Divided into sections exploring communication, simulation and materialisation, Design Transactions explores digital and physical prototyping and testing that challenges the traditional linear construction methods of incremental refinement. This novel research investigates ‘the digital chain’ between phases as an opportunity for extended interdisciplinary design collaboration. The highly illustrated book features work from 15 early-stage researchers alongside chapters from world-leading industry collaborators and academics.

The quality of urban development, high-rise buildings and open spaces is thus sustainably improved. Nevertheless, this planning and awarding tool is repeatedly scrutinized. Twenty-five international projects from 2009 to 2015 presented in this volume shed light on design methods and techniques employed by internationally renowned architects. The collection is supplemented by explanations of technical and formal criteria regarding the presentation of competition entries and addresses expenditure issues in relation to prize money and architects' fees. This manual not only includes an essay on the history of architectural drawings submitted in competitions, but also presents theses and guest contributions by judges and entrants. These address the importance of competition designs in relation to panels and diagrams since these hold significant sway over the eventual outcome.

Book excerpt: The first monograph on the Japanese-born, Sydney-based architect, celebrated for his innovative holistic approach to design, nature, and urbanism. Koichi Takada is part of a new generation of architects striving to bring nature back into the urban environment—an approach he developed after living in Tokyo, New York, and London. His architecture reconnects people to the natural environment, drawing inspiration from organic forms and local contexts. This elegant volume showcases a series of Takada’s recent projects, illustrating the unique way his talent connects the natural and the designed, and how it has evolved over the last ten years. Beautiful photographs of buildings and interiors juxtapose against sketches and images of nature—illustrating the aesthetic inspirations behind the designs and the way they embody light, air, and even sound. Philip Jodidio’s texts guide readers through the range of spaces that span from the interiors of the award-winning National Museum of Qatar in Doha and Urban Forest in Brisbane, the “greenest residential building in Australia,” to striking buildings in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, China, and the construction of a new space in Tokyo. This unique architectural journey will inspire readers to see architecture with a new mindset.
