Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Australia the First World War remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. In general terms with Australian unit histories the quality of authorship is very good, most of them share the common strength of making plentiful mention of the individual officers and men who served, fought, died, was wounded, or taken prisoner, or who came safely home at the end of it all. They are a prime source for genealogists and military historians. William Edward 'Billy' Sing, DCM (2 March 1886 - 19 May 1943) was a part Chinese Australian soldier who served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I, best known as a sniper during the Gallipoli Campaign.

Book excerpt: One hundred years after the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba in October 1917... 'The Desert Column is based on the diaries that he kept through out the war. Published in 1932, it is one of Idriess' earliest works. Harry Chauvel noted in the foreword that it was the only book of the campaign that to his knowledge was "viewed entirely from the private soldier's point of view"... Idriess served as a sniper with the 5th Australian Light Horse. Enlisting in 1914, he began his diary "as we crowded the decks off Gallipoli" and he continued writing until returning to Australia... The diaries cover his experience of some of the war's major events from life in the trenches at Gallipoli to the battles at Romani and Beersheba. One of Idriess' strengths as a writer is his ability to place the reader at the scene of the action... The diaries reveal a keenness of observation and a descriptive and pacey style that Idriess would develop further in The Desert Column.' - The Australian War Memorial

Its purpose is to name all the Commanding Officers who led units into actions in the Great War and to describe their lives before and, for those who survived, after the war. From these pages emerge the men who shaped Australia's battlefield history - both the professional soldiers and the former teachers, accountants, salesmen, clerks, farmers and others from a broad range of occupations whose leadership on and off the battlefield proved so crucial. These are men Australia cannot afford to forget.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Friend the Enemy is the first detailed history of the Gallipoli campaign at Anzac since Charles Bean’s Official History. Viewed from both sides of the wire and described in first-hand accounts. Australian Captain Herbert Layh recounted that as they approached the beach on 25 April that, once we were behind cover the Turks turned their .. [fire] on us, and gave us a lively 10 minutes. A poor chap next to me was hit three times. He begged me to shoot him, but luckily for him a fourth bullet got him and put him out of his pain. Later that day, Sergeant Charles Saunders, a New Zealand engineer, described his first taste of battle, The Turks were entrenched some 50-100 yards from the edge of the face of the gully and their machine guns swept the edges. Line after line of our men went up, some lines didn’t take two paces over the crest when down they went to a man and on came another line. Gunner Recep Trudal of the Turkish 27th Regiment wrote of the fierce Turkish counter-attack on 19 May designed to push the Anzac’s back into the sea, It started at morning prayer call time, and then it went on and on, never stopped. You know there was no break for eating or anything … Attack was our command. That was what the Pasha said. Once he says “Attack”, you attack, and you either die or you survive.

This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The (New Zealand) Canterbury Mounted Rifles, like other cavalry units, fought dismounted in the Gallipoli campaign and suffered horrendous losses there. After the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsular, the unit's remnants were refitted in Egypt and then committed to the Sinai and Palestine campaigns. They took part in the battles of Rafa, Romani and Gaza, and in the advance to Jerusalem and Jericho in 1918. Throughout their time in the desert, they fought in the mounted role for which they had originally been trained. They ended the war after the Armistice by returning to the Gallipoli Peninsular where they had suffered so much. The book is profusely ilustrated by a range of interesting black and white photos, and an appendix on the unit's horses plus a Roll of Honour, list of awards etc.
