Book excerpt: Three dimensionality (3D) face modeling is an advanced and challenging feature for computer vision, and our goal is to implement it using various methods to bring 3D models closer to reality. Although many algorithms for construction of 3D model from two dimensional (2D)images are present, we propose a new approach using front and profile images with various image processing techniques for small computing devices. Basic methods such as resizing, denoise, overlay, blending etc. will be used for generation of the UV-map of texture, but as its core element, it relies on the Haar Cascade face detection algorithm. For structure or mesh, a shape detector with 68 landmarks to identify the shape of the face in the image and compare it with our own dataset for most similar structure. Though we have achieved good results from the proposed approach, there is potential to improve by making the model an identical replica.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D face reconstruction and facial expression analytics using 3D facial data are new and hot research topics in computer graphics and computer vision. In this proposal, we first review the background knowledge for emotion analytics using 3D morphable face model, including geometry feature-based methods, statistic model-based methods and more advanced deep learning-bade methods. Then, we introduce a novel 3D face modeling and reconstruction solution that robustly and accurately acquires 3D face models from a couple of images captured by a single smartphone camera. Two selfie photos of a subject taken from the front and side are used to guide our Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) induced part-based face model to iteratively reconstruct an initial 3D face of the subject. Then, an iterative detail updating method is applied to the initial generated 3D face to reconstruct facial details through optimizing lighting parameters and local depths. Our iterative 3D face reconstruction method permits fully automatic registration of a part-based face representation to the acquired face data and the detailed 2D/3D features to build a high-quality 3D face model. The NMF part-based face representation learned from a 3D face database facilitates effective global and adaptive local detail data fitting alternatively. Our system is flexible and it allows users to conduct the capture in any uncontrolled environment. We demonstrate the capability of our method by allowing users to capture and reconstruct their 3D faces by themselves. Based on the 3D face model reconstruction, we can analyze the facial expression and the related emotion in 3D space. We present a novel approach to analyze the facial expressions from images and a quantitative information visualization scheme for exploring this type of visual data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D Face Modeling, Analysis and Recognition presents methodologies for analyzing shapes of facial surfaces, develops computational tools for analyzing 3D face data, and illustrates them using state-of-the-art applications. The methodologies chosen are based on efficient representations, metrics, comparisons, and classifications of features that are especially relevant in the context of 3D measurements of human faces. These frameworks have a long-term utility in face analysis, taking into account the anticipated improvements in data collection, data storage, processing speeds, and application scenarios expected as the discipline develops further. The book covers face acquisition through 3D scanners and 3D face pre-processing, before examining the three main approaches for 3D facial surface analysis and recognition: facial curves; facial surface features; and 3D morphable models. Whilst the focus of these chapters is fundamentals and methodologies, the algorithms provided are tested on facial biometric data, thereby continually showing how the methods can be applied. Key features: • Explores the underlying mathematics and will apply these mathematical techniques to 3D face analysis and recognition • Provides coverage of a wide range of applications including biometrics, forensic applications, facial expression analysis, and model fitting to 2D images • Contains numerous exercises and algorithms throughout the book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D face reconstruction and tracking has become an important research topic during the past few decades in both computer graphics and computer vision. Researchers are seeking for a method to model the human face using a low cost device with high quality. Currently, face models can be captured by expensive active sensor-like laser scanning; however, this sensor technology is not affordable for everyone and experiments must be conducted under certain conditions. In our thesis, we present an automatic 3D face reconstruction and pose estimation framework using a consumer depth camera. Our method does not require any prior face model database. We acquire location of human face part using regular face detector, and in order to generate a high quality face model, we integrate and register information from multiple frames together, which allows detection of noise. In addition, by detecting 2D landmark information provided by the RGB image, we are able to find correspondence in the 3D model. Results are demonstrated by visual inspection. Future application for our research may involve game design and face avatar generation.

The development of computer systems to tackle real-world problems is an extremely difficult task. As computers capable of manipulating multimedia information are becoming more powerful and commonplace, larger and more complex systems are increasingly being built. To fully comprehend the complexity of such undertakings, proper modeling of multimedia information and systems must be carried out.A model provides a high-level abstraction of the system in which the implementation is based upon. It permits the desirable properties of the system to be extracted and analyzed and also provides a uniform framework for integration between different systems, and for interactions between the system and human users. This volume is devoted to the discussion of effective modeling of multimedia information and systems for a wide range of applications. It aims to provide common modeling frameworks for the integration of the diverse subjects in the field of multimedia information.

Book excerpt: This book proposes to solve the low-resolution (LR) facial analysis problem with 3D face super-resolution (FSR). A complete processing chain is presented towards effective 3D FSR in real world. To deal with the extreme challenges of incorporating 3D modeling under the ill-posed LR condition, a novel workflow coupling automatic localization of 2D facial feature points and 3D shape reconstruction is developed, leading to a robust pipeline for pose-invariant hallucination of the 3D facial texture.

Book excerpt: In the past decade, 3D statistical face model (3D Morphable Model) has received much attention by both the commercial and public sectors. It can be used for face modeling for photo-realistic personalized 3D avatars and for the application 2D face recognition technique in biometrics. This thesis describes how to achieve an automatic 3D face reconstruction system that could be helpful for building photo-realistic personalized 3D avatars and for 2D face recognition with pose variability. The first systems we propose Combined Active Shape Model for 2D frontal facial landmark location and its application in 2D frontal face recognition in degraded condition. The second proposal is 3D Active Shape Model (3D-ASM) algorithm which is presented to automatically locate facial landmarks from different views. The third contribution is to use biometric data (2D images and 3D scan ground truth) for quantitatively evaluating the 3D face reconstruction. Finally, we address the issue of automatic 2D face recognition across pose using 3D Morphable Model.
